Widespread Panic Halloween in Savannah

Forums:

Took a side trip last night up to Savannah for the WSP Halloween special at the Enmark Arena.  Nice venue, big Shakedown, and a shuttle to the venue right across the street from our hotel.

Lots of freeks in crazy costumes (us included) and the bands theme was Alice in Wonderland.  Great trippy Alice in Wonderland visuals with a White Rabbit musical motif weaved in all night.  Who Are You FTP and a sick Tall Boy which is one of my personal favorite WSP tunes.  Of course, they did an extended Red Hot Mama ("who is going away to Savannah").

Only downside was we were sitting right next to a normie/square looking dude who obviously had too much, too fast and wouldn't leave me alone.  Not aggressive or belligerent, but way too friendly and couldn't take a hint.  I am a very easy going and tolerant person, but finally told him we were trying to enjoy the show, he was invading our space, and just needed to chill and enjoy the show too.  But dude kept at it, trying to fist bump me every 60 seconds, trying to talk to me (he introduced himself at least 12 times), slapping me on the back, etc.  Dude was there with some other guys and took them aside and told them they really needed to reign him in. They did and moved him a couple of seats over, but after set break, he was back right next to me doing the same thing.  Told his friends that in my 40 years of show going, I have only called the Yellow Shirts once and if they weren't going to deal with it, I would have the guy thrown out.  It worked and they disappeared but one guy came back and was really apologetic.  Feel bad for dude, but man, what an annoying fucker.

That guy sat next to me at the Sphere one night.

Setlist looks absolute fire.

Damn PK, that sounds like an instant bro-crush night!  LOL

Ken, I think we're probably staying at the same place.

show was fun last night but a bit uneven for me.  Tonight's first set feels stronger

Wow. Variations of that wasted seat neighbor are so common, especially these days. What's not common is the reaction of him & his friends. Usually it's, "Fuck you man!!! It's a rock show, not the opera!!! We're just having a good time!!! Why don't you lighten up maaaan?!!?!!

You got the rare decent people who understand their friend is fucked up.

Count yourself lucky.

Alright - back from the weekend.   Savannah is such a great city.  Hard to imaging I've lived so close and driven through so many times and not taken advantage of my proximity.   Wonderful people, easily walkable, incredible charm, and delicious food.   Tied to go back to the Wyld for lunch on Saturday after spending a couple hours Friday afternoon but they they we're closed for a private event.  Sitting on a dock eating seviche and fish tacos with perfect weather is hard to beat.

First night was a roller coaster, We were about three rows back on the left side and had great seats.  They started with Claire de Lune and a large vinyl (assume) sheet covering the stage for the first few tunes.   Alice and the rabbit ran around with their shadows being projected on the curtain before it finally dropped.   It felt like a strong start especially with white rabbit being teased throughout the first set.  Occasionally Alice and the rabbit would wander through the crowd and and they'd put a spot light on them. Large creepy animated AI images of the character of the story were projected through the night.  I felt the middle of both sets slowed or become muddled that I lost a bit of interest.   I've found that's my biggest challenge with WSP over the years and sometimes the tapestry of musicians is too much and they don't know where to pull back.  The wood tour on the other hand was clear and tight and I recall wishing they would learn to restrain the overlapping instruments a bit more.  It wasn't bad but it wasn't necessarily taking off for me either.  It was a fun show to be at but our group put the show at about 6-7  (yes that 6-7).   The end of both sets were highlights with the riders of the storm and white rabbit sandwiches.   As was the who are you, conrad, and tallboy.

The second night we were in the rafters - top row, stage right.  I wasn't super excited about these seats but they ended up being great.  The sound was shockingly much more clear - not sure if they made adjustments or it was just location.   And the band felt fresh and alive compared to the night before.   Maybe all the FTP and random songs put a little pressure on them on halloween but Saturday was crisp and - as one friend put it - much more jammy.   Jimmy was on fire and shredded Diner multiple times.   The sets were more even in a good way and the energy seemed to stay up through out the show.  The band wasn't stepping over each other but rather found a place where they could all find their own nooks and crannies. This is what I've heard from this year streams - and it was great to hear it in person.   The setlist wouldn't have been the one I would have chosen and I was thankful for it.  New songs brought new layers of interest and delight as they played them well.  My only distaste was at the end with a 23+ min encore that was mostly slow and plodding (first two songs).  Seemed like an odd way to wrap up a Halloween weekend run and a Saturday night show.

Overall a great time despite being down from a little cold.

Ken, that sucks, sorry you had to deal with that !!

I haven't gone back and listened to Panic Halloween yet, still on Mule and had to watch Billy on nugs again. We were pretty far away and I wanted to see it up close.
They must like the Alice theme and i peeked at setlist...love White Rabbit. We are gearing up for all 3 Port Chester shows, haven't been there since Phil passed. Gonna wear my Disco Ball outfit and twirl, spin and glow when they play it...lol

Not disturbing anyone, hopefully.

I have this one framed from 2016 Mann Philly show...my fav poster from them other than Ryman Wood show with Billy's first guest appearance...
