Phil Lesh destroys Cape Cod 10-27-79

Forums:

Was anyone at this show?

“Garcia rips a few lines of ‘Caution.’ The audience goes nuts. A sinister pause opens in the music. A thick, heavy door slowly creaks open – too slowly for Lesh. He decimates it with the loudest, nastiest, sickest intro to ‘The Other One’ that will ever be played. Cape Cod is no more.”

I was there but it was my second show so a lot of that was lost on me, but I do remember that I wanted to go back for more. My girlfriend at the time not so much, but she did insist on bringing me to a band she loved so got to see the Kinks there a few months later. I also remember that after the show you could stand 15 feet from the door to the outside and still be warmed by all the dancing heated hockey rink billowing out of the building.

Love the Dancing In The Streets and Brent's tone that didn't last much past 1980.

I was there the next night which was pretty darn impressive also.

I remember the fog was so thick that you had to stick your head out of the window and look down to see the yellow line in the road. Visibility stopped at the end of your hood.

79-82 is prob my fave

Wikipedia:  In 1976, the arena was sold to Ed Fruean who owned Coliseum for three years before selling it to Vince McMahon in 1979. In 1984, McMahon sold the building to Christmas Tree Shops who chose to utilize it as a warehouse.  Capacity 5,000–6,500 (hockey) 7,200 (concerts)

>>>7,200 (concerts)

My guess is that there were way more than 7,200 in there. I was on the side and this was a major - take a step back night. They were passing bodies over the crowd to the front.

I do remember trying to figure out what kind of mind control this band was doing on the crowd to make everyone so fanatic compared to the other concerts I had been to at that time like Aerosmith, Van Halen and Fog Hat. This was all very different - all they did was play songs and they didn't even use any pyrotechnics.
