It should be quite the spectacle, and will certainly make folks feel really good about themselves, but other than that I'm not sure what it's really going to accomplish, and I fear that ultimately this is going to feed the very thing everyone will be protesting against.
So stay safe out there folks, and for the love of god stay legal, stay nonviolent and shut down those who are sowing violence.
And good luck, because I think we're all going to need it.

“We have become a Nazi monster in the eyes of the whole world—a nation of bullies and bastards who would rather kill than live peacefully. We are not just Whores for power and oil, but killer whores with hate and fear in our hearts. We are human scum, and that is how history will judge us. . . . No redeeming social value. Just whores. Get out of our way, or we’ll kill you.
Well, shit on that dumbness. George W. Bush does not speak for me or my son or my mother or my friends or the people I respect in this world. We didn’t vote for these cheap, greedy little killers who speak for America today—and we will not vote for them again in 2002. Or 2004. Or ever.
Who does vote for these dishonest shitheads? Who among us can be happy and proud of having all this innocent blood on our hands? Who are these swine? These flag-sucking half-wits who get fleeced and fooled by stupid little rich kids like George Bush?
They are the same ones who wanted to have Muhammad Ali locked up for refusing to kill gooks. They speak for all that is cruel and stupid and vicious in the American character. They are the racists and hate mongers among us—they are the Ku Klux Klan. I piss down the throats of these Nazis.
And I am too old to worry about whether they like it or not. Fuck them.”
― Hunter S. Thompson, Kingdom of Fear: Loathsome Secrets of a Star-Crossed Child in the Final Days of the American Century
I'll be out there today. I've been doing this since I was 16 and I've won some (way less nuclear weapons and nuclear power plants today than there would be because of massive worldwide demonstrations in the 80's, and there is less clear cutting in CA now than there would be) and lost some (draft registration is still a thing went on a three day march to stop that, but the biggest loss was the 2nd Iraq war).
That said I don't think it's any more complicated than Trump doesn't want me to go. That is all the motivation I need at this point.
I don't know what will be accomplished besides a scheduled pep rally but at least people are getting out on the weekend to larp as activists and supporting local economy at the brunch place. Hopefully there will be some cool costumes out there!
I see the accomplishment being people feeling solidarity with their neighbors and community - the feeling of not being alone is powerful. There's a lot of fear and uncertainty in these times, knowing your neighbor is standing with you means something big, and that you are one of millions across the country and the world is even bigger. I am reluctant to go since I fear my back being jostled by people moving around/into me, but I'm so happy that friends here and friends and family in other places are representing.
And then there's the joy of seeing this (downtown Eugene):
>>>people feeling solidarity with their neighbors and community - the feeling of not being alone is powerful<<<
After thinking about it that's what came to my mind, and that's not nothing. Since the Charlie Kirk assassination democrats have been on their heels, I'm sure today lifted people's spirits about what will continue to be a long, dark road.
And what dice said; I'm sure today was a VERY good day for shops & restaurants, and that's always a good thing. I bet Michael's Arts & Crafts stores were KILLING it. (Watch MAGA try to take credit for that!)
I'm certainly not against peaceful protest, I just often worry they can become counterproductive, especially when they devolve into violence and/or destruction, which they so often do.
I'm impressed that today seems to have gone so well. You know the MAGA world, both the average red hat schmo's and certainly the administration were desperately hoping things would get ugly. I was expecting there to be Proud Boy plants posing as "Antifa" working to generate violence, but I haven't heard of anything like that happening.
So on it goes. It all needs to stay non-violent (blow bubbles at ICE, don't throw rocks) and hope that at some point the moderate right will begin to see that their fear & loathing of liberals isn't as bad a situation as a MAGA totalitarian regime.
And since things are almost certain to get worse before they get better, that hope might just be realistic.
Trump is a populist President who ran and got elected on populist issues. In this regard, the whole No Kings thing is huge miss. I get that it feels good but it's just a DNC echo chamber with fiddles and fun signs.
I assumed a second Trump Presidency would kick-start a renewed Democratic party but that hasn't happened. If it comes down to sleazy Newsom vs robotic JD Vance, get ready for 8 additional years of a Republican in the White House. Global politics is fucking weird.

Terence McKenna (27 April 1999):
"What civilization is, is 6 billion people, trying to make themselves happy by standing on each-others shoulders and kicking each others teeth in. It’s not a pleasant situation. And yet, you can stand back and look at this planet and see that we have the money, the power, the medical understanding, the scientific know how, the love and the community to produce a kind of human paradise. But we are led by the least among us; the least intelligent, the least noble, the least visionary, and we do not fight back against the dehumanizing values that are handed down as control icons.
"This is something...I mean, I don’t really want to get off on this tear because it’s a lecture in itself but...culture is not your friend.
"Culture is for other people’s convenience and the convenience of various institutions; churches, companies, tax-collection schemes and what have you. It is not your friend. It insults you. It disempowers you. It uses and abuses you. None of us are well treated by culture, yet we glorify the creative potential of the individual, the rights of the individual, we understand the felt presence of experience is what is most important. But the culture is a perversion; it fetishizes objects, it creates consumer mania, it preaches endless forms of false happiness, endless forms of false understanding in the form of squirrely religions and silly cults. It invites people to diminish themselves and dehumanize themselves by behaving like machines; processors of memes passed down from Madison Avenue and Hollywood.”
Audience member: “How do we fight back?”
TM: “I think that by creating Art - Man was not put on this planet to toil in the mud. Or, the God that put man on this planet to toil in the mud is no God I want to have any part of. It’s some kind of Gnostic demon. It’s some kind of cannibalistic demiurge that should be thoroughly renounced and rejected. By putting the ‘Art’ peddle to the metal, we really, I think, maximize our humanness...and become much more necessary and incomprehensible to the machines.”
As much as i love George Carlin, i often wonder if he was still alive how he would feel about voting given the current conditions. He was very vocal in his point of view that voting was basically a worthless exercise. In a highly militarized society where the militia can be turned on its own people with the stroke of a pen, and a world where "personal data" has turned into a blatant oxymoron, I'd love to ask him that question.

Protesting is a very important part of Americans 1st Amendment right to speak, assemble, and petition. Rights don't exist because a paper says they do. Rights have to be claimed, they have to be exercised, and they have to be defended. This is not a one time event. It's a collective muscle that needs to be flexed regularly, or it atrophies and dies.
Continually lowering the bar to access and making protest available to as many people as possible is its own accomplishment. It's not all burning tires and throwing bricks, and it allows "normal" people to see and understand that, and in a place that is already pretty familiar to them (in their own towns, alongside their own neighbors). I guarantee a lot of the people out yesterday were protesting for the very first time in their lives, and now they'll be back. They'll bring a friend next time. Maybe two. Perhaps those two friends are going to be casting the first votes of their lives in a few weeks. This will inform those votes. Votes matter.
Protesting allows neighbors to meet, exchange ideas and gain awareness. It allows vulnerable people to actually see and feel protected and included. These things are part of what builds coalitions. As el nino posted; coalitions are what ultimately leads to bigger, more effective actions.
Don't forget trump lost the 2020 election as a direct result of protest.

The retorts about Saturday from civilians, MAGA media and the administration are so pathetic it would be comical if it wasn't just another horrifying example of how far we've devolved.
Maybe that object coming toward us from space really is a doomsday machine sent from the Universal Court.
"We've given them every opportunity to show us they have something to offer, but if we wait any longer that species is going to start shitting all over US! They're killing the dogs? They're killing the cats? Good lord. Send in the smasher, wipe 'em out and let's see if they get it right next time".
This is terrible. Only takes 2 or 3 idiots out of a massive crowd to create a scene - a make it a national news story. A mouthy clown, that stupid ass who stole his shades, and the dickhead who tripped him and sent his head to the curb. The blood indicated this could have been a lot more serious. What if he didn't get up? What if he sustained a serious brain injury? All that for a pair of shades?
Glad some folks tried to patch things up, but it's hard to negotiate "in the heat of passion" with someone who was treated that way.
We need to lead with love. Remember what Stephen Stills said during 49 Bye-Byes. "If we can't do it with love in our hearts, then we ain't got no right to do it." As hard as it seems, love and reaching out is the only way we're gonna patch up this country. Sooner or later, even the assholes will notice.
Like it or not, free speech says people get to say what they want, including that Trumpie. Maybe a mouthy New Yorker in town for the game. I have relatives in New York who say abhorrent shit. Sad.

Sad.
