Like so many buses I got on the panic one pretty late.
One of the few things the betrayer did in the positive side was to make me believe that being open to music is better than not as I was previously foolishly believing
Anyway I don't know a lot about their history and I do know that Jimmy hasn't been with them for to terribly long
So I'm not really sure of all the details about when he was with them and not because he was ill and etc (?)
What I know is that that other than the first time at The vibes, every time I've seen them Jimmy has been with the band
And last night even more so than this, Phil's energy was just flowing through him.
Not really sure of a better way to say it but that's what it felt like. It's not like he sounded like him or anything else other than the energy the good strong beautiful musical abundance that Phil gave us.
So right now I am going through YouTube videos of the Q.
One of them was probably the beacon in 2001 when the Yankees were winning the world series right outside the dance floor on the guard's TVs
And Phil was bringing out every song that we all dreamed of like new potato or Mason's children
He made everything so fresh and the energy of these guys together
Five men writing with fingers of gold
Right now I have on 2002 gotv and it's such a funny old video my friend here was saying it's on betamax lol
Being without my Northstar or who I thought was the love of my life has been a pretty hard challenge and a lot of pain to bear
Which is why I circle back to these shows and why being here means so much and how I am grateful beyond words to be able to be moved by this music
It is the power and the glory
Dave schools
The happy Buddha who thunders through my body in a way that has only happened with one other guy
And the musicianship of the rest of these guys is just top notch.
For any detractors like I totally get it because before I understood; I didn't.
Happens a lot with me lol>cringe
For any of you all out there who have seen the quintet and as llollo says so aptly
MeditateOnTheQ
The first show I put on had a 10-minute jam that dropped into a terrapin we used to say that they would pluck it out of the air like a delicious fruit
I know not all of you have been here since the beginning and it really was such a magical place where the reviews were written with care and great detail about so many aspects besides the music. All the depths of what it meant to each of Us
It really was a moment in time
And my gratitude for having been here through it and for it and with it is immeasurable
Thank you Phil

Nice post.
Nice post.
>>>before I understood; I didn't<<<
That's profound, and applies to all of us in such a vast array of ways, virtually all the time.
"Certainty" is such a flawed concept.
All we can hope for is a little rock 'n roll, and sometimes we get just a little bit more.
GTTS.

I probably should have gone
I probably should have gone ot the first Boston show since I was in town but skipped for other celebrations. And Neil was close in NH playing a great show too. There were many options, too many.
I've gone back and forth on wsp since 93. Some of the shows have been pure bliss - first bonaroo, wood tour, the redmile racetrack shows, but many also seemed like the music got muddy since they played so loud. I would often leave with my ears ringing.
However, this latest run has sparked nothing but compliments and every time I listen to a segment of a show it is well crafted, each instrument is clear, and it feels like they are peaking late in their career. And it's why I pulled the trigger on Halloween. Easy drive and I'd like to see the success of 2025 a couple times before it's gone.

I went to 8 or 9 GOTV but the
I went to 8 or 9 GOTV but the 2002 Vibes shows were something special. The whole weekend was. I remember getting a postcard from the Vibe Tribe that was an overhead shot of the grounds. I was able to see my car and tent in the overflow field, less than a 10 minute walk to the concert field. Now I wonder where that postcard went.
I was lucky to have been working in NYC when the Q was happening and got to go to many Beacon shows. Hallowed ground for sure. It was never as good at the Best Buy / Nokia.
Along with The Zone there was a local group active on the web Dew Board which grew out of WBAI's Morning Dew radio show. I had small kids so Saturday night was usually spent at home with the tape deck set on record, icy gin and tonics in the glass and a bowl or three for the evening.
All of that was a special time for me. I don't necessarily want to go back but there's a few years where community was strong, music was pushing boundaries and life felt like everything was just about perfect.
An old school head gave me a ticket to MMJ at Red Rocks a few years ago. It was a great time and I loved the band. He passed away last year and I still thank him for turning me on the to them.

Hey Jill, about your getting
Hey jlp, about your getting on the WSP bus late, I suppose better to get on late, than not at all? Strikes a chord with me because I feel like I got on the GD bus late, but oh well, still glad I did!
You got me thinking about Jimmy Herring and WSP.
I *probably* first saw Jimmy Herring with Col Bruce Hampton - but I was not an astute concert-goer at that time - so all I remember is that I saw Col Bruce & Aquarium Rescue Unit sometime around 88 or 89??? Jimmy (and Oteil for that matter) was probably in the band I saw - I remember it being a good show.
However, I do DEFINITELY remember seeing Jimmy with the PLQ Feb 2001 at Maritime Hall in SF. So good I had to go back...and back...
I love that WSP is still going strong - I haven't seen them since Houser died. I sorta lost interest around that time anyway and I moved on to other music or whatever. It's funny (to me) because I don't really equate Jimmy Herring with WSP - and yet he's been in the band close to 20 years! When I hear the name Jimmy Herring, I think of Phil Lesh!!!!
Side note: first saw Widespread at a bar in Memphis circa 1988, there were probably 30 people there. I think the last time I saw them was at SF Warfield in the late 90s? My favorite memory is Laguna Seca Daze 95. Indigo Girls were the headliner so WSP played in the afternoon. Dick Dale opened. Wavy Gravy was the MC. I love that day for many reasons!
