Late Night canceled - straight out of Fascism 1A

Forums:

Actually, controlling the media is probably covered in Intro to Fascism.

They hate the show and they despise Colbert, so they force its cancellation.

CBS says despite the show being top rated it's a financial decision and it has nothing to do with their pending mega-sale that needs the Trump admin's approval..... riiiiiiight.

MAGA is already after PBS and every other outlet that doesn't bend the knee, so if I were Jimmy Kimmel I'd be getting ready, because they'll be coming for him too.

These are most definitely interesting times.

WTF

> MAGA is already after PBS

Was after PBS. Congress voted to defund public broadcasting today.

I get that ridiculing your boss in late night is a long time running gag, but it's a good lesson that if you are dick to your boss, they can cut your throat.

The pendulum swings farther to the right....for the moment.  It will swing back...further and harder to the left in time.   Need a good leader.  I fear Newsome will be the choice but hopefully someone a little more interesting and less douche / swampy

At least we don't have to worry about Bert and Ernie indoctrinating kids into their lifestyle anymore.

Part of the paramount settlement

with all the new streaming it was just a matter of time

big networks are toast unless they adapt

like newsprint

ymmv

The Colbert show sucked balls. Kimmel and Fallon are just as bad.

There are bunch of factors that have spurned the demise of the late show format but there is still room for one, should it be done properly. The networks are just incapable of producing anything authentic or irreverent. Their death spiral has no bottom.

Anyone still think that this hasn't been a fascist takeover?

Anybody really have any thing to argue about the 2025 plan?

This has all been written out in black and white none of this should be surprising or shocking because we all knew this is what it was.

Anyone who has been in denial about this well welcome to reality folks.

Jp

It is to laugh

I love when someone comes in with an opinion like they are the standard bearer of what should or should not be available to everyone.

Who really gives a fuck if you like him or not? Most of the nation disagrees with you firstly, and secondly, are you saying that you agree with this censorship?

I really don't understand your point at all

Fish:

THIS IS THE POINT

So many people who are so much smarter than me have said when the media acquiesces THEN IT'S ALL OVER

Did you guys hear about the new show "Late Nights with Trump"

Even joking i could fucking see this happening somewhere someday thanks to all the motherfuckers who were warned about this

but cast their votes for the devil anyways. Shame on you and in an ideal world only those that checked that box would be affected by this POS.

>>>The Colbert show sucked balls. Kimmel and Fallon are just as bad<<<

I don't necessarily disagree with that, but it's beside the point.

If it's true that the show has been losing the network millions of dollars then that's a fair reason to cancel it, but while ratings are down from the glory days it still has millions of nightly viewers and is the top rated late night show, so it seems pretty clear that the show was canceled because it attacks Trump & his masters nightly and they don't like that, so they leveraged their power over the pending mega-billion dollar Paramount merger to have the show removed.

If I were Colbert my first reaction would be to say fuck you, walk right now and immediately emerge somewhere else, but since the show still has eight more months (at the moment) and with no reason whatsoever to hold back now I suppose he can use his lame duck status as a bully pulpit to REALLY let it fly.

Donny isn't going to be happy with that.

Colbert likely signed a contract that states he must stay until the end or he pays. What he could do is be such a pain in the ass to the network that they pay him even more to leave earlier than announced.

> my first reaction would be to say fuck you, walk right now and immediately emerge somewhere else

I'd say there's good chance his contract stipulates that if he does that, he'd be restricted from performing elsewhere for a while, and will face a hefty penalty if he does.

Yeah, when I heard how long the show will continue I figured contracts had to be involved.

It will be interesting to see how much if any he changes his approach. He'll certainly continue to go full scorched earth on Trump, but now he might also start consistently bashing CBS, which could well get him an earlier exit.

Or maybe he'll mysteriously hang himself in his dressing room.

He would probably do it when the video tape was resetting.

The easiest path for CBS would be to fire Colbert now and pay off his contract. It's really more about the 200+ people who work for the show. Some are covered under annual contracts but others are not. This way they can continue to receive a paycheck and have runway to find new jobs. It's the right thing to do.

J. Stewart on the DS last night was pretty intense, even for him. Watch the clip.

He was a little wound up.  Great stuff.

Stewart's no "moron".

"Go Fuck Yourself' is the catchiest song I've heard all year.

Heading to the white house now to serene trump with it!

I've literally never watched an entire "late nite" tv show one time in my life

Me neither, Bss.

Does that include the Daily Show?

I record Colbert and usually watch just the monologue. Usually sophomoric but occasionally he hits a HR.  And I get an idea of what the nazi's are up to. I don't give a fuck what movie stars have to say. Very rarely I will catch the interview.

Jon Stewart was perfect on moonday

it strikes me how so many in here only want declare the point of "i don't watch that"

as if that matters

this is the fascist takeover that, if y'all were in 1930s germany, would be like, "oh, yea, i don't watch those shows so who cares"

weird

disconcerting

and, yea, these late night shows are my main sources of political news, because satire is manageable

((((Kimmel, Myers, OLIVER, Colbert))))

It was just a simple statement

I don't need to own a television or understand America is being taken over by fascists

It's disconcerting to me how many Americans rely on entertainment personalities as their primary source of news

separately, I do think Jon Stewart might probably make a halfway decent Senator

I love JS but no more actors/tv people running for office, please.

I bet Bill Maher is stoked about Colbert

How far that guy(Maher) has fallen. Very Sad.

The new Southpark tonight was Phantastic,  skewered T like only Southpark can!

Wow hope Trey and Matt have an exit plan.

I may have watched a few late nights when Carson was on and he would have George Carlin appearing. Other than that, zilch.

It's pretty clear with the new king that if you aren't willing to kiss his ass and hand while on your knees, you're a target.

*George Carlin and Steven Wright

Highly doubtful trump's mushroom penis works that well

But that's poetic license for you

Since we are talking about South Park you might like Cannibal the Musical which was Trey and Matt's college movie. It's about Alfred Packer the only person convicted of cannibalism in the US which happened during the gold rush. The movie has been described as part Friday the 13th and part Oklahoma.

If you end up watching it the song where all the miners in Utah are telling Alfred Packer not to go to CO to look for gold because they will fail are Trey and Matt's college professors. They dropped out of school, to make the movie. Also Alfred Packers horse is named after either Trey or Matt's ex girlfriend which makes a lot of the dialogue about the horse a lot funnier.

My wife ran the Breckenridge Film Festival when the film came out and Trey went to CU in Boulder so it ended up getting shown a lot since Breckenridge was Alfred Packers destination.

Colbert is boring. Leno had it right. I'm sure if you offered CBS 45 million per year, you could keep it on the air.
