I had the privilege of attending a memorial dedication to the 9 tribal nations specifically from Oklahoma who served as "Code Talkers" in both WWI and WWII. I had known of the Navajo's contributions in WWII, but not of other tribes. It's a beautiful dedication on the part of a single private donor. The memorial is located on Monkey Island, OK. Beautiful day with just enough wind to have the flags flying.
The 9 tribes honored at the memorial are the Cherokee, Choctaw, Comanche, Pawnee, Ponca, Seminole, Kiowa, Muskogee Creek, and Osage.
It should be plainly stated here that historically, Native American people serve at a per capita rate higher than any other population in this country. About five times higher, and have fought and died (also at five times the rate of American forces overall) in every major conflict in this country for 200+ years. Additionally, they contribute a much higher population of women servicemembers than non Indians do.
The Olympic folks made an effort to involve tribes in Utah in 2002, and honored the Navajo Code Talkers with a pin and I believe they were a part of the Opening Ceremonies. Their absolutely invaluable service to our country definitely got some notice.
