All Fall Down
All Fall Down was mind blowing. I've never heard a guitar sound quite like that. To my ears it almost sounded like a human language coming out of that guitar with its effects and the way he was phasing the notes. Billy seems to always tuck in one or two mind numbing songs each show. Not that all the other songs aren't also great.
Thought for sure they would of thrown Orange Blossom Special in there in the first set. I don't think that is the first all train set he has done, I remember him doing it once before, I think ?
I'm in for the first two nights of St. Augustine and can't wait! I saw Billy there last year and while I did not know one song other than an Alice In Chains cover song, it was one of the best shows I have been to in 40+ years - no joke. This year I am more familiar with the songs. while its a hike from my home in S FL, the St. Aug amp has become my favorite venue in the state
Bobstar, let me know if you want to do a meet up in the lot, set break, or otherwise. We are staying at a cabana out back of my parents' place in lighthouse park right on A1A (next door to Gypsy Cab) just a 20 minute walk to the gate. We usually go up to the top level at the show for the view, sea breeze, and room to dance. Saturday will be crazy and weather forecast says hot and sticky.
Agree that Billy and his boys are one of the best things going in live music right now. Wonder if he will bring out that new lighting rig in St. Augsutine being its an outdoor show?

Well, that was more fun than a frog in a glass of milk. Stayed more on the traditional bluegrassy side, but plenty of more electric stuff too. ABB teases in the first set so not surprised by the Little Martha>Ramblin Man encore. Was a bit on the warm side but got a perfect sunset.
The screen was about half size that he has been using for the indoor shows on this tour but tasteful and psychedelic. Being up where we were, we happened to be among seven or so fans whose shadows were projected on the big top throughout the show. Had to be bust out my best dance moves and we were giant doing shadow puppets. Looking forward to more tonight.

Very enthusiastic crowd of dedicated Billy fans without the frat boy contingent we encountered down here last month for Panic.
Thanks for the reports and pictures, Ken. Great setlist. ALWAYS love hearing John Hartford's songs. Some tasteful graphics. Great pic with Dickey, Mike. Wow, whattashow.
Fri and Sat was so much fun! incredible venue, the best crowd out there and such a sense of joy. The lot was a scene and hassle free. even danced with the volunteer ushers. if haven't been to a show don't think just make it happen
It was a brain melt jam. I've heard him play Jimi but I don't think I've heard Billy quoting BOG before. Maybe he's thinking about adding a drummer since he teased Who Knows?
It is an interesting question whether this band would be any better with a drummer. I'm thinking no, but like the fact that Billy does occasionally do gigs with a drummer. I've just gotten into this band since Alex Hargreaves joined them on fiddle. I'd be interested in opinions of people who were into Billy when it was just a 4 piece and what you all think of that version compared to the current 5 piece.
I prefer the current lineup w/o a permanent drummer but now and then is fun. Hargreaves adds a lot of texture to the sound which I am all for. I liked the band's sound before he joined too.
Slightly off topic but Sierra Ferrell just recently added a drummer and some electric guitar to her live performances and the drummer is really subtle, mostly uses brushes.
Billy had a local KY guy sit in on a few songs today with brushes and snare. Heavy train beat. Red Daisy was incredible with that beat pushing it along. I think the guy has played with Sturgill Simpson. Those last two shows from Lexington KY were ripping good. They also paid tribute to Frank Wakefield doing a couple of his songs towards end of show.
I'm thinking of the highly-rhythmic end section of the big jam near the end of Meet Me at the Creek from last night, and thought they brought it home just fine without a drummer.
Also, Ken's comment cracked me up, but that's just because I agree with him.
Yep yep yep. Hottest scene going. Love me some BMFS. Getting to know the music over this last year has been a hoot. Flashbacks of when each Dead song was new to me.
Yes that Summertime into Meet Me At The Creek was quite the marriage. That Andy Hall guy was excellent. He was hanging on and doing fine. Wow! Every show is so different and the catalog is quite huge. Turmoil and Tinfoil hooked me.
I got home today actually. My wife hooked a bunch of stuff together with headphones through the bed. With the Nugs I watched this whole tour with last night and tonight live
Watched that short video on reddit. Many of the comments are down with this guys behavior, not me. If he wants to go through life mad at the universe, then so be it, but it will be a rough ride. We have all dealt with this issue forever. My first experience was camping out for Dead tickets in the 70's and 80's at Ticketmaster. Long lines with faithful fans, but there were always empty blankets, chairs, or even tents. Then when I lived in Colorado there were these exact same kind of issues with tarps at Telluride Bluegrass and at Redrocks. People rush in when the gates open and get their tarp as close to the stage as possible then leave it empty as they go about other business such as socializing with friends at the concert or festival.
Maybe venues and ticketing locations have set up specific rules and that would be fine. In that case follow the rules. If only informal rules exist they are set by the crowd. Empty held spots were obviously the norm at this show as evidenced by the number of empty chairs this guy decided to throw. That might be my biggest problem with this guy. I was taught not to touch or abuse other peoples property. This guy obviously doesn't care. Sure it is only a fold-up chair, but it is the principle that matters. Wasn't his property to destroy.
He could have simply placed his chair down at the front of the line in front of the empty chairs since he was so intent on making some kind of statement about what he felt was fair. I'd cut him alot more slack if he did that, but the way he went about it was simply wrong. Likely just another narcissistic asshole imo.
I've enjoyed every guest that they've had sit in this year. Andy Hall might be my favorite though it's hard to choose one because they've all been great in their own way.
someone should have picked up their chair and beat the ever living fuk out of that fucking turd....id a gone to jail for the satisfaction of breaking his fucking nose
I usually go for the seats in the back where there is room to dance so never had to contend with the space savers. And while the chair toppling dude's heart might be in the right place, the way he went about it was particularly aggro. Frankly, I don't like aggro energies at shows. It would have been different he gently placed the chairs on the ground all zen like.
I don't have a dog in this fight. My GA floor days are over, but the intimidation started with the people who think it is their god given right to be up front. It's a problem with Billy Strings and Phish. I've seen plenty of videos of the people in the front who have as much room to dance as what you could expect to have in the hallway while the rest of the floor is smashed in. That doesn't happen without people being dicks. I don't think that guy just started to throw chairs out of the blue I'm pretty sure there was a whole lot that led up to that.
My old tour buddy was a photographer and before he started getting passes I used to help him up front on the rail - there was never any expectation of room to dance up there and chairs in line holding your place would have been laughed at. So I guess I'm all for anything that cuts into the entitlement that has come to dominate so much of the concert going experience.

SHOW NOTES
It’s the band’s first time playing this venue. Venue capacity: 18,500 #arenagrass
While switching guitars for “Home,” Billy takes a minute to ask the crowd what they’re smoking ‘cause it ain’t a smell that he’s familiar with. Is it DMT or a marijuana version of Malört?! “Doesn’t smell like Grandma’s muffins either.” Marlört is a traditional wormwood-based digestif—thought to be a hangover cure. For many Chicagoans, Malört is the drink that has defined the Chicago bar experience.
A noteworthy full band version of “The Cuckoo” which veers away from the traditional delivery and instead jams out into a space before > LFD
Bustouts this show include: “East Virginia Blues” (LTP 9/30/23, 51 show gap), “The Cuckoo” (LTP 12/6/23, 30 show gap), “Mother’s Not Dead”(LTP 10/31/22, 146 show gap), “On The Southbound” (LTP 11/6/21, 259 show gap), “Little Cabin Home On The Hill (LTP 3/1/20, 362 show gap)
The instrumental trio of songs “Give The Fiddler A Dram/Whistling Rufus/Ragtime Annie” is featured on Handmade to Hand Played, an album released by Preston Thomson Guitars showcasing artists that have a Thompson among their collection of guitars. Billy has two in regular rotation.
You got to take a moment (or several) to appreciate Dad, Terry Barber—who taught Billy “everything he knows”— rolling out onto an arena stage sporting a Billy String’s Country Club Jacket in order to accompany the band around the can to pick some traditional bluegrass. Songs that went from being played in their home and around the campfire to being played to thousands of fans. This my friends, is what I imagine a bluegrass loving parent’s wildest dreams are made of. Some top notch shit to witness all around. This is a moment many of us will cherish forever. Thank you Dad!!!
So so many good songs I never heard before. Psycho, Pretty Daughter, Mothers Dead a bit of a grim set but man o man I'm having a blast with my Nugs and Billy Base.
just what the doctor ordered, some edibles and 2 nights of BMFS
To finish up with his Dad was very special to Billy. His Dad is a ham too
Psycho is a Larry Sparks cover, I think Pretty Daughter is a Danny Barnes cover, I'm not sure about Mother's Not Dead. If you're having fun deep diving into rare cover tunes there's a great playlist on nugs that'll keep you busy and entertained for a long time (forgive me if I've mentioned it before) 15 hours of deep track live music:
Leon Pay e was Psyco original and Bill Monroe for Mothers not dead
i got this info on Billy Base
it has so much info on each song he plays as he is playing it live
rhe stats per each song is throwing a number stat nerd in musical heaven
my wife sees me on my couch with earphones on with Billy on the big screen and Billy Base on laptop with my new 30% Indica smiles knowing I am so happy
Very user friendly website. Amaze your family and friends with encyclopedic knowledge and stats about each and every song right in the palm of your hand.
And if you are watching from home, you can amaze them even more by calling each song in the set before the first note is played. It appears that there is about a 60 second delay on the webcasts while Billy Base lists the song immediately as they are played live and in person.

It is an interesting question

Billy had a local KY guy sit

Watched that short video on
Watched that short video on reddit.

I usually go for the seats in
I usually go for the seats in the back where there is room to dance so never had to contend with the space savers. And while the chair toppling dude's heart might be in the right place, the way he went about it was particularly aggro. Frankly, I don't like aggro energies at shows. It would have been different he gently placed the chairs on the ground all zen like.

I don't have a dog in this
I don't have a dog in this fight.

And if you are watching from home, you can amaze them even more by calling each song in the set before the first note is played. It appears that there is about a 60 second delay on the webcasts while Billy Base lists the song immediately as they are played live and in person.
