>With signs of solidarity taped to their doors, restaurants and businesses across the Bay Area abruptly shut down operations on Thursday, joining a national protest to show America what it’s like to live “A Day Without Immigrants.”
The strike, coordinated largely through social media and word of mouth, spread quickly throughout the country, with many immigrants skipping out on work and school and closing their wallets to demonstrate their impact on the country’s economy and culture. More than a dozen Bay Area businesses — from popular breweries to Latin supermarkets and fine-dining venues — shut their doors, pledging to stand with their immigrant employees and customers.
The strike comes at a time when fear in immigrant communities is at an all-time high, following raids by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement last week in which hundreds of people were detained for deportation proceedings. That fear has heightened with the apprehension of at least two individuals who were in the U.S. under federal immigration programs that in theory should have protected them from deportation. It’s the latest episode in a drawn-out war between immigrant communities and President Donald Trump, who has vowed to double down on deportations and punish sanctuary cities that protect undocumented immigrants.
The decision to close for the day was extremely personal for Ajay Walia, owner of Saffron Indian Bistro in San Carlos and the Michelin-starred Rasa Contemporary Cuisine in Burlingame.
“We work with first, second and third generation immigrants,” said Walia, who immigrated to the U.S. from India in 1992. “At the end of the day, we’re all immigrants. There is no America without immigrants.”
Walia said the restaurant had to cancel about 95 reservations Thursday for Rasa alone. He made all the calls to customers himself, he said, a feat he admits took him most of Wednesday.
“We just want people to realize that we’re all in this together. Everyone is needed. There is no such thing as one race being more important than the other,” he said.
Adolfo Guevara, co-owner of El Rancho Market in Menlo Park, said he closed the business to show solidarity, with his staff of 22 staying home in protest.
“We’re very proud to be immigrants and proud to be part of the Menlo Park community, especially in these political times when we wake up every morning to scary news and we’re not sure what will come next,” he said. “We’re proud to be living in the United States and we want to continue to give back to this country that has give us so much.”
The Half Moon Bay Brewing Company also closed, saying on Facebook and Twitter: “The Half Moon Bay Brewing Company takes great pride in our staff and we appreciate their commitment to providing our customers quality food and service, and we fully support our staff in honoring this movement.”
The protest is the latest in a string of actions inspired by 2006 immigration-reform protests and the 2004 political satire A Day Without a Mexican. Others are sure to follow — organizers are planning to protest the administration’s recent ICE raids Friday during a gathering at Justin Herman Plaza in San Francisco.
“A Day Without Immigrants” actions are taking place in cities including Philadelphia, Washington, Boston, Houston, Chicago and New York. Organizers expect thousands of people to participate or show solidarity with workers.
Rather than closing altogether, owners of the Bay Area’s Tacolicious gave employees the option of protesting or coming to work. The business — which has three locations in San Francisco and two others in Palo Alto and San Jose — is donating all proceeds to the American Civil Liberties Union Thursday, according to co-owner Sara Deseran, who said immigrants are the backbone of California restaurants.
“Not only are they an essential part to our restaurants’ success, but they’re family,” she said. “What we hope is that people realize how crucial this (action) is. The immigration policies in the U.S. need to change, not go backwards in time. I think people don’t realize how much of this country is founded on immigrants.”
Not everyone was ready to support the protest. In Los Angeles, officials with the nation’s second-largest school district urged students not to join in any walkouts or demonstrations on Thursday. Alma Pena-Sanchez, LAUSD’s chief of staff, said in a released recording that “while we respect everyone’s right to have their voices heard and to participate in civic action such as protest, all students and staff are encouraged and expected to come to school.”
It's not class bigotry, dude. Slacker usually follows me around and remarks "I clean pools" instead of addressing the topic at hand. Oh, but poor snowflake. Business as usual, my ass. The entire Bay Area was effected by this stirke and he knows it. No respect for this ignorant "pool boy" regardless of his wages or occupation.
Yeah, I couldn't get my big Mac at McDonald's today. Total bummer. Oy, you really are clueless.
And now..WE March!
Seriously though, if anyone wants to help the immigrant communities, Catholic Charities is helping out and is looking for volunteers to respond in the event of ICE raids to document and provide legal resources to the families.
>..Cory McCollow, who owns Nido Restaurant near Jack London Square in Oakland with his wife Silvia, told KCBS why they were closing for the day. “Nido is what Nido is because of our staff and they are mostly immigrants,” McCollow said.
“Silvia is a first generation American from a family of immigrants, and we felt that one day of not being open, not having revenue paled in comparison to the importance of making a statement and standing behind all of our staff,” McCollow went on to say.
Sebastopol Road in Santa Rosa is the epicenter of Latino businesses in Sonoma County. Marcos Suarez, diversity program manager of the Sonoma County Economic Development Board, detailed the closures there.
“Pretty much all of the businesses there are closing. Camacho’s Market, La Texanita, the food trucks,” Suarez told KCBS. “Lola’s Market, they have seven locations throughout Sonoma County, and they’re one of the biggest. It really was a snowball effect, everybody got behind this movement.”
Rancho Mendoza Super Mercado in Santa Rosa and Sebastopol is also closed in Sonoma County.
It seemed like business as usual today here in Seattle.
At lunchtime I walked down to the newly opened Rancho Bravo location on University Ave., and ordered the Bravo Burrito with black beans and carne asada. As always, it was outstanding. They have been a great addition to the neighborhood since they opened the U-District location last month. I love that they opened up two doors down from Chipotle, to go mano y mano with their muy authentico Mexican cuisine vs. Chipotle's homogenized, corporate version.
The Ave. is nothing but ethnic cuisine restaurants (predominantly Asian, with a smattering of Arabic and Mediterranean) and I didn't see anyone close shop.
Tomorrow may be a different story, as my sister told me tonight that a general strike is called for tomorrow, something being called a National Buy Nothing Day. We'll see how that goes. Either way, I will be open for business, paying a day's rent and paying an employee, so I hope for some revenue, while respecting the decision of those to protest with their wallets.
OK. It is beautiful that people have a Nice Day Off to relax, do laundry, watch TV and all.
While you're fuckin' off from the work that day, call it a political statement. That's what I did when my pipes froze up last year.
" FEEL GUILTY FOR YOUR 2000 - ERA RUNNING WATER PRIVILEGE !!! "
Actually I was just a fuckup with un-heated plumbing, but I learned 'white guilt' from being a dumbass Honky.
But, I could not afford to take a day off Work, as someone had to pay for the repairs, and that someone was me.
I can not just go to some other country without a work visa, to earn 10 times my normal wage in order to repair the pipes.
Canada will not allow me to work without a work visa, and will jail and deport me. But I can visit, if I bring my own money and don't take jobs from Canadians.
Mexico will not allow me to work without a work visa, and will jail and deport me. But I can visit, if I bring my own money and don't take jobs from Mexicans.
New Zealand will not allow me to work without a work visa, and will jail and deport me. But I can visit, if I bring my own money and don't take jobs from New Zealanders.
Uganda will not allow me to work without a work visa, and will jail and deport me after they rip out my gold teeth. But I can visit, if I bring my own money and don't take jobs from Ugandans.
Myanmar will not allow me to work without a visa, and will jail and deport me. But I can visit, if I bring my own money and don't take jobs from Myanmarians. Maybe I can't even visit. Some countries have extremely tough immigration laws. Myanmar might kill me if they catch me bussing tables.
Every single USA citizen is an immigrant-spawn. Except the Indians who(m) got slaughtered and put in concentration camps, and the last dozen Buffalo.
My grandparents came to USA 100 years back, or so. They did fill out the forms, and learned USA English as best as they could.
Of course they were all involved in bootlegging and 'speakeasy" stuff, but they were USA citizens and had to obey USA laws if busted.
And "Immigrants" there is no INHERENT "RIGHT" to come to/invade THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. JUST AS YOU DON'T HAVE THIS "RIGHT" in ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.
Yes, Pool boys in the news! And some pool boys do make enough money to take the day off. It's not about class, well unless you want to argue that some pool boys have zero class. But that doesn't have to do with their profession or their immigration status.
>>...One anonymous pool boy said he made more than $60,000, plus tips, for just six months of work. “I would charge a customer $40 a week to keep their pools clean and all the chemicals balanced. This usually took me about 45 minutes a trip,” he wrote.
“I would typically only have to visit the pool once a week so I could do many pools in a week. For about five years I maintained roughly 10 pools a day, six days a week for six months out of the year…I was making good money for an 18 year old with no college education.”
In 20-plus years, I have never heard of the Republicans controlling what meetings Democrats can have with officials of the Executive Branch and never had a staffer ask me to leave a meeting to which I am entitled to attend. My constituents have questions about who is being targeted by ICE, which DREAMers with DACA they are targeting for deportation, which victims of domestic violence ICE is deporting, which immigrants at church shelters are being targeted. We know the statements by Trump about targeting criminals is a lie, but we were hoping someone could give us the truth or any information at all.
The new mass deportation executive orders are unprecedented, but so are the lengths to which the Speaker and Chairman Goodlatte are going to control the information being disseminated to Members of Congress. I expect such dictatorial shenanigans from the Trump Administration, but not from competent, compassionate legislators like Speaker Ryan or from legislators like Bob Goodlatte. Do they have ear pieces feeding them orders from President Bannon or the others making decisions in the White House?
Speaker Ryan is not an emperor and does not control who I meet with. My colleagues and I asked for this meeting and we still have not been given details by ICE about who they are deporting, why, and how. We simply have hit a stone wall and now Republicans in the House are cooperating in limiting the information that we can provide to our constituents.
>>>>And "Immigrants" there is no INHERENT "RIGHT" to come to/invade THE UNITED STATES OF AMERICA. JUST AS YOU DON'T HAVE THIS "RIGHT" in ANY OTHER COUNTRY IN THE WORLD.
My Mom's an immigrant, but she's white. Are we cool?
>>Let's not make an assumption of class based on profession. That, in and of itself, is true bigotry.
If Slacker was some young-ish dude, I might be on board with that. But calling a grown man with a child "pool boy" is definitely some classist bullshit.
What a stupid thing to say, McDoobie and to get your boxers in a bunch over -that's what people in the profession are called - see the news article above. Deal with it and stop whining.
And if you're going to insist that the term 'pool boy' is classist, might as well go full tilt and call it sexist too.
>>might as well go full tilt and call it sexist too.
That sounds about right. I'd also add that using "boy" when referring to folks of the non-Caucasian persuasion is racist. Congrats on your offensive trifecta.
Being "offended" and thinking you are offensive are two different things. But I probably need to chillax and bail before I say something ban-worthy. (If I haven't already.)
I know Hoover, I know. I really want to go there but this ain't the old place. Besides I am honestly out the door to go have dinner. I'll post a pic as evidence later to proove I wasn't "playing disc golf"
See you in the politics folder after you stuff your face, McSnowflake as I'm sure admin will have to move this thread after you complain about being offended,
thanks Timmy. We went out for a nice vegan lunch - our main meal of the day. It wasn't very crowded most people out of town and many going with the general strike and not spending money. This is a little Asian vegan place and we were happy to patronize Alice's business on a windy and rainy day. She and her husband are immigrants from Laos and run the place by themselves.
Their Orange veggie beef made from shiitake mushrooms is delicious. Veggie wonton soup, mmm.
>>A hearing in El Paso County in Texas went from ordinary to “unprecedented” last week when half a dozen Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents showed up at a courthouse where an undocumented woman was seeking a protective order against the boyfriend she accused of abusing her.
The woman, a citizen of Mexico who was living in El Paso had been driven to the courthouse by a victim’s advocate from the Center Against Sexual and Family Violence, a shelter for victims of domestic abuse where she had been living.
She left under arrest.
“This is really unprecedented,” El Paso County Attorney Jo Anne Bernal told The Washington Post.
It was the first time in her 23 years at the courthouse, Bernal said, that she can remember ICE agents making their presence known during a protective order hearing. The agents had come to stake out the woman, identified by her initials I.E.G., because, Bernal speculates, they likely received a tip from the only other person who knew the time and place of the hearing — the woman’s alleged abuser...
Nanzi is just trying to protect her husband's severely underfunded pension plan. She's got skin in the game. That's why she's more shrill than usual. Plus she'd have to clean her own rats nest if Carmen is deported.
I don't know what the real facts are but you should not just post the only part of the article you want to prove your point. I can do the same .//////////////The woman had a prior criminal record and had been previously deported According to the affidavit, I.E.G. has a criminal and immigration history that dates back to 2010 and includes numerous deportations and arrests for assault, violating probation, domestic violence, false imprisonment and possession of stolen mail.
All victims of crimes are entitled to the same protections. Understand?
>>The woman had a prior criminal record and had been previously deported, but, according to Bernal, had no current outstanding state warrants.
“It really was a stunning event,” Bernal said. “It has an incredible chilling effect for all undocumented victims of any crime in our community.”
It is county policy not to ask about citizenship status, Bernal said, because officials want to make clear that all victims of crime in El Paso are entitled to the same protections within the criminal justice system.
>>See you in the politics folder after you stuff your face, McSnowflake as I'm sure admin will have to move this thread after you complain about being offended,
I see the thread is still here. I guess those emails I sent to Admin while I was at dinner were a waste of time. Damn!
Dinner was good though. Not as fancy schmancy as Hoover's night out sounded, but fun anyway. I had some dead animal just for you Nancy.

>>...One anonymous pool boy said he made more than $60,000, plus tips, for just six months of work.

And if you're going to insist that the term 'pool boy' is classist, might as well go full tilt and call it sexist too.

That sounds about right. I'd also add that using "boy" when referring to folks of the non-Caucasian persuasion is racist. Congrats on your offensive trifecta.

thanks Timmy.
