Starting with the Showalter hire, I had a feeling this is where they would end up in October
Showalter has managed five teams and this is the fourth he has led to the playoffs. But his clubs are just 9-14 in the postseason. His Yankees famously lost the 1995 Division Series to the Mariners in five games after leading two-games-to-none, in part because Showalter did not have full appreciation of the talents of a rookie pitcher named Mariano Rivera. He lost the 2016 AL wild-card game with the Orioles by never using elite closer Zack Britton in a tie game. In the closest thing to the playoffs in the regular season, the Mets were swept last weekend by the Braves, pretty much assuring they would not win the NL East. It means taking a wild-card route, so needing 13 wins rather than 11.
Who can forget? 2007 & 2008
The 2007 Mets had a seven game lead on September 12 and were a clear favorite and then the wheels came off. New York lost five in a row. Then they won four of five. Finally, they lost six of their final seven. On the final day of the season Tom Glavine allowed seven earned runs in 1/3 of an inning to complete the collapse.
The 2008 Mets, led by manager Willie Randolph, held a 3.5-game lead in the NL East, and with only 17 games to go, New York looked like a sure thing. However, the Metropolitans won just seven of the remaining contests to blow the division lead.
Becoming the first team ever to blow a 3.5-game lead in consecutive Septembers, according to the Elias Sports Bureau.

Musgrove was on fire last night. Best game (and most important) he's ever thrown.

It's a stepping stone. They
It's a stepping stone. They have an owner who is finally willing to pay/buy. They got a few players who are aging to build momentum. No one would have guessed Scherzer would have laid an egg in the first game.
I'm not worried. I do think they should overpay for Ohtani though if the option presents itself.

Nothing about the Ear? Dude
Nothing about the Ear? Dude definitely had something on his ear. What it is/was is unclear. But clearly spin rate and velocity were considerably above normal. Was it the deciding factor? Who knows. But it was seemingly a fair call to have him checked out. The next inning his ear was dry as a bone

pitchers have been known to apply hot sauce to parts of their body (shoulders or ears) as a way of masking soreness by creating a manufactured pain that overshadows any actual physical ailment.
it also acts to get them fired up as a way to enhance their performance.
how about that Trent Grisham? he ended the season hitting below the Mendoza line, but he's been able to get some clutch hits all season, and now in the playoffs, and his defense has been stellar.

If professional track and
If professional track and field were like baseball they would make the marathon runners compete in the 100 yard dash to see who is the best but only in the Olympics. The best regular season record in baseball has only won it all three times since 1995. Regular season and playoffs are two completely different games. It's fun and unpredictable but also kind of strange to have a playoff system that almost never awards the best overall team with the prize.

Losing to the Padres is next
Losing to the Padres is next level stuff.
The last and only San Diego Championship was the 1964 AFL Chargers.
At some point the Padres will join the Chargers and Clippers, move to L.A., play in Dodger stadium
and be their full-time bitches.
