I'm generally not a big Elvis Costello fan, but this one sounds pretty cool.
Two benefit shows at the glorious Great American Music Hall on Friday September 30th (Same weekend as Hardly Strictly). 7:00 & 10:00pm shows, $100.00 (103.09 with fees) with a band featuring Larry Campbell, Teresa Williams, Ruth Davies, Paul Revelli, and Austin de Lone. Sounds like a winner to me.
In my experience Elvis is best in these small, special type shows, so I'm in for the late show. I already have tickets to see Charles Lloyd in SF the same night, but that should be over with time to spare for me to get over to the GAMH by 10:00.
Tix available now, but they'll likely sell out fast.

>>>Is the Sweetwater gig Costello's only association with Garcia<<<
I think he's recorded a few Garcia/Hunter songs and I think he performs a couple live. He is one of many artists who have said that they discovered the quality & depth of the GD songbook late, but fell in love with it once the did.
>>>the guitarist is TBA<<<
It's Charles Lloyd, so you can count on the replacement being top-quality. I'm skipping that night and seeing the other two trio's Lloyd is showcasing that weekend, with Ruben Rodgers on bass and the great Gerald Clayton on piano, and then with Zakir Hussain & guitarist Marvin Sewell (who may end up being the one replacing Frisell).
It's interesting that Frisell dropped off that show. He's playing all this weekend with various excellent groups at the Freight & Salvage, and he's playing with his trio at the Kuumbwa in Santa Cruz a few days before that Lloyd show. Hopefully he's fine and it was just a scheduling problem.
And the Henderson Lab is intimate for sure, but it can get a bit cramped for me. Still, it's cool to watch the street going by while listening to the music.
A big weekend of music overall in the city that weekend.

And Ras is most definitely a zoner.
As for me, I've seen Costello many, many times in many different settings spanning many years, I've even paid for I think three of those.
I respect him as an artist & songwriter, he's maintained his career for a very long time and he's got a very distinctive voice, but he's just never been my type of thing. The best I've seen him was when he played at a symphony hall with a string quartet, that was brilliant, and a couple of Bridge Benefit acoustic performances were really good, but his rock shows have just never worked for me.
This however should be a good time. The Great American Music Hall is one of my all-time favorite venues and a place I haven't been to in a very long time (and when looking at their schedule I've been thinking lately that I may never get back there again... kids today, sheesh!) and I'm not going to HSBG at all, so I thought what the hell.
I haven't had a real good double-header since before the plague. I figure the legendary Charles Lloyd searching the infinite in a pin-drop quiet space, and then going a mile or so into a raucous room with Elvis Costello & a fine band singing songs I love in a favorite little venue will be a real good one.

I agree with admiring him as an artist. After buying his first album, I would have never bet that I'd be seeing him 45 years later. He's got quite a catalog now. Plus it's Garcia songs at GAMH!

Hey WALSTIB, are you sure about that? I was just looking at the SFJAZZ web site and they're still advertising that show with Frisell.
If he's off the bill they're really bumbling their web site info.
In this day & age I guess that shouldn't be a big surprise.
I'm semi-planning on seeing Frisell's trio in Santa Cruz tonight.
It's a small place, if I get a chance I'll ask him.
