What no one is talking about is that we called it the Baby Boom for a reason. Boom stood for a huge increase in the population. The youngest boomers are 57 now and Covid pushed many of them into retirement. The employment market has had 40 years of more people wanting jobs than there were jobs. That Boom is gone now. The Oligarchs are trying desperately to start a recession to get those uppity employees back in line, but without a very big increase in immigration this will continue. It's funny that no one from Republican approved countries wants to come here because of the Republicans. So that leaves us with more brown people and Fucker Carlson goes off on that every night. Interesting times.

Elon Musk has warned that a US recession is “more likely than not” to come soon as the Tesla chief executive confirmed plans to cut 10% of salaried staff at the electric carmaker over the next three months
A Mild US Recession Is Coming This Year, Bank of America Economists Say
The World Bank says most countries are headed for a recession, and warns of a possible return to 1970s ‘stagflation’
The likelihood of a recession on most econometric models has now risen from 30% to about 60%.

I just got my social security letter on what they're expecting to pay me. If I retire at 62 I get X amount per month... wait until 67 and I get several hundred more per month, but here's the thing; Even with the lesser amount at 62, I'd have to live to around 80 to see the benefit. I'm seriously thinking of 62 now, it's soooo close!
Meanwhile, had a lot of friends were forced to retire thanks to the previous fool in the White House
^my dad did that same calculation at 61 and retired at 62. 5 more years of stress wasn't worth it. He just turned 84 and is still as happy as the day he retired, and the man never broke 30k/yr working for the same company for 33 yrs. Happiness was is more valuable.
I am an executive recruiter who specializes in engineers & scientists in water & wastewater treatment. Have reached out to over 100 potential candidates on a few jobs and gotten 3-4 responses. When I send them a job spec and hiring company website...... 0 for 4 in 2nd responses.
Don't blame them much. These jobs require them to report to HQ. Probably 15% of the people that I have reached out to for a job in Kenosha WI .... actually live in Kenosha.
I agree that demographics and lower population of post boomers is a factor. But these generations have been so screwed - Big recession during Obama had their folks doing 2nd mortgages and taking the jobs at Home Depot that were traditionally filled by youngsters. Cutting off immigration means no farm workers. Now gas costs as much as a paycheck. FU seems like a very human response
Noodler, I got told it's about 17 years before it turns revenue-negative for ya. So you'll have to hit 79 for that. But if ya take the $$$ now, if you can do something to make that $$$ grow, you'll probably be ahead more than the %'s if you wait. And happier. All depends on your current assets, payout amounts, needs, and desires.
One big concern with retiring at 62 is the insurance, since you won't qualify for Medicare. But if you can find something affordable on the Marketplace with the ACA...
But with my 401K taking a shit, I may go back to PT work. Things ain't what they were 10 months ago. Just found out I can't open a Roth IRA unless I have income and I can't deposit more than I make working in it. Can't take savings and create an account? What BS.
