I think Newsom running for President in 2024 would be a disaster for the Democratic party. Dude's got a ton of baggage already, not least of which is his connection to Nancy Pelosi.

DeSantis is an utter putz. He's a whiny loser with very little political talent. He won the R governor nomination in 2018 because Trump endorsed him for kissing the ring more than the other guy and now he's using the Florida state government to punish trans kids and other vulnerable populations, and that gives him some appeal among the bloodthirsty R base, but he'll very likely wither under actual national scrutiny

DeSantis didn't outlaw all abortion, which should make him acceptable to the more rational Republicans. He's also a Trumper, so he gets their votes too.

Most Americans really don't know shit about Newsome and his baggage. Of course, even if he would be a decent Executive, and maybe the best of the Democrats, he'll be virtue signaled out of the race by tbe prudes in his own party.

If Biden can't run again then Kamala will be the Democratic front runner, likely unchallenged by Newsom.

and if Trump doesn't run, DeSantis  appears to be the anointed replacement.

I supported Harris in her bid for the presidential nomination last time around, but I think my money would be on Stacey Abrams at this point, maybe with Beto O'Rourke as her running mate.

Newsom also faced a recall election, which gained him some national exposure both good and bad, and while he won the recall vote easily, the issues raised fit right into the existing playbook of the racist Right.

People in this state suffer the highest taxes in the nation, the highest homelessness rates, and the lowest quality of life as a result. Also, as I said above, Newsom is connected to Nancy Pelosi through marriage. They're not related by blood, but I don't think that will deter meme-makers on the Right. In short, if Newsom runs for President, he'll be giving the Right plenty of material to work with.

I'm not overly concerned with how the idiots on the Right will spin him. They'd make Mother Theresa into an enemy of the State. I'm more interested in how the idiots on the Left will deal with him.

Maybe more importantly, will he be viewed as the quintessential "California progressive," who represents all that is wrong with today's Left? Will he be alienated from millions of more center people that he needs to win?

is there such a thing? If there is, it would be a black woman like Barbara Lee. The best known progressive Democrats right now are all from the northeast.  Newsom isn't any kind of progressive, he's a moderate who sucks up to big business like Jerry taught him, and seems to me right of Kamala Harris.

If the Rs win in the Fall they may take over the ability to control much of the states' election apparatus. If this happens it may not even matter who the Ds run.
