Saw Lez Zeppelin at the Brooklyn Bowl last night.    They did a sloppy and loud as all fuck version of Physical Graffiti all the way through:

Lez Zeppelin.jpg

The band was pushing their amps past 11, often resulting in terrible feedback and sometimes it was just a wall of noise.   Still cool to hear deep tracks like Night Flight, the Wanton Song, and Sick Again that don't usually make it into most Zepp tribute shows.  Drummer was a monster.

Cool venue and they really do have a bowling alley right in the venue where you can bowl and watch the show, but the lanes were all taken all night.   Next time I will sure to sign up well before hand.

Down on Me (traditional song) - Wikipedia
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Down_on_Me_(traditional_song)

"Down on Me" is a traditional freedom song from the 1920s or earlier that became popular following its remake by Janis Joplin and Big Brother and the Holding Company.
Several early recordings and field recordings exist:[4]

Eddie Head and His Family, (1930) on American Primitive Vol 1: Raw Pre-war Gospel (Revenant 206)Mary Pickney and Janie Hunter, on Been in the Storm So Long: A Collection of Spirituals, Folk Tales and Children's Games from Johns Island, SC (Smithsonian Folkways 40031)Doc Reed, Livingston, Alabama in 1940. on Negro Religious Songs and Services (Rounder CD 1514).The Golden Harps, on compilation Soul of ChicagoEdna G. Cooke

The lyrics of the freedom song are darker than the later Joplin lyrics. For example, the second stanza of jazz versions[5] and Dock Reed's version run:[6]

2. Mary and Martha, Luke and John, All God's prophets dead and gone. Looks like everybody in this world round down on me.

Janis rearranged the song and created new lyrics. The song was originally released in the summer of 1967 and was featured on the band's debut album Big Brother & the Holding Company. The song would reach #42 on the charts, barely missing the Top 40 mark.[7] A live, more aggressive version is featured on the posthumously released live album In Concert and the 1973 collection Janis Joplin's Greatest Hits. This version was also released as a single, reaching #91 on the charts in 1972.

The third and final stanza of Joplin's version ends with a positive message:[8]

3. Believe in your brother, have faith in man, / Help each other, honey, if you can / Because it looks like everybody in this whole round world / Is down on me.

I was there. The person who shot this had somewhat better seats than me (or a really good zoom).

On the way there I had that feeling I'd see someone I knew there. I did not. But I did cross path with Pete Shapiro.

No T-Bone Burnett or James Burton, but Stuart Duncan and Victor Krauss brought the goods. And like the Joe Jackson show posted above, the lack of chat sort of restored my faith in concert-going humans. Keep it (shut-the-fuck) up, folks!yes

Phil (Marymount) and a couple smokin' Stringdusters shows are also on the LMA front page. (I recommend hitting the 2022 filter on the left side to weed out recently posted shows from other decades.)

Anyway that Artimus Pyle + Outlaws show the other nite (game 4 celts gs) was a lot better than expected. Beautiful old Warner theater was a only about half full but man it heated up. Pyle, what a cat, US Marine and the only member of Skynyrd who didn't abuse drugs and alcohol. A health freak, he survived the plane crash and after finding the pilots dead he had the presence of mind to maneuver his way alone out of that swamp to get help and was promptly shot by the 1st person he encountered, a farmer who winged him in the shoulder thinking him a trespasser. He still drums his ass off and opened the show with the Skynyrd anti-gun anthem Sat Nite Special. Stayed and signed for everyone who walked up to the stage after his set. He invited all the young kids up there with him, really warm guy.

Wore my Crazy Horse shit and was talking to the dudes at the outlaws mech table about old outlaws shows I was at and one of the guys says, 'we're gonna do some Neil Young tonight'. About 3/4 thru their set Henry Paul intro's his son (name already forgotten) who comes out slinging a big red guitar like Poncho's and rips into a loud ruckus Rockin In The Free World. That was the cat I was talkin to earlier. A much fun kick ass nite

^ great album! ^^great story

I love the Sons of Champlin and have the "Loosen Up Naturally" album. It's great indeed!

I went to this show at Winterland in 1969 with Ace of Cups opening for Sons of Champlin opening for The Band. Hell of a show.
