May 5th at The Capitol Theatre in Passaic, NJ.
To this day, I don't think I have ever been as excited to see a live show more than this one. I was lucky enough to had seen one of The Lamb Lies Down On Broadway shows and, although Gabriel had left Genesis by this time, I had been taken by his stage presence on top of my love of his music. I had probably already worn out my copy of Peter Gabriel (1) by the time the show was announced. I was washing my car when the announcement of the tour and local shows came over WNEW-FM and proceeded to drive my half soaped car to the local Ticketmaster and grabbed a pair of 6th row tickets. What a night and what a band. Gabriel, Tony Levin, Larry Fast, Jerry Marotta, David Rhoads plus playing off stage as not to be seen, Robert Fripp.
It's been a long time since there has been a new Gabriel album and I "hear" that he is currently sorting thru over 150 songs. I can't wait.

I was at this show too! We were on our way into Giants Stadium to see the Dead. They were handing out flyers as you pulled into the lot, and one of the shows listed was Gabriel at The Capitol. We turned around and drove straight to Passaic and bought tickets. Got back to Giants Stadium and didn't miss anything.
The show was historic, and there was Fripp playing behind a curtain. Certainly was a good band. I think Television opened up, almost got booed off stage. The encore was Back In New York City, and we all thought Peter was going to go into a Lamb Lies Down On Broadway set. Well, that never happened, but it still was a great show. I would love to hear a new Gabriel album, the last real album was Up, that was too long ago.

Indeed, Television was the opening act and the prog rock crowd there for Gabriel didn't really know their music or care for them in the least. I remember quite a few boos during their set. Many years later I spoke to Richard Lloyd about that night (He's the brother-in-law of a good friend) and the band was a bit weirded out by it. The were a bit more particular in the future as to who they played with after that night. I was also hoping for a bit more of music from Lamb. Still, that version of Back in New York City was quite a treat.

The Passaic show was March 5,
The Passaic show was March 5, not May 5. Just saying... ❤️
Also, when did the Dead play Giants Stadium before 9/2/78?
Are you thinking of Roosevelt Stadium on 8/4/76, and did the Gabriel tickets go on sale that far in advance (seven months)?

The Passaic show was March 5,
Correct you are. In my defense, I'm a photographer, not a copy editor.

^ Hey I sat behind Muhammad Ali once at a Kris Kristofferson concert at the Country Club in Reseda, Ca. in 82/83? Held around 900 people and was all tables and chairs. Saw many GD related shows at that place in the early to mid 80's

The first time I saw him was in 1980 at the Boston Orpheum. Someone had spray painted Rael on the entrance which I thought was pretty funny. Great show. Saw the live orchestra show at the Berkeley Greek a few years ago. Also amazing. He is just on another level.

That might be one of the hardest questions for me to answer, E. I've given it some thought but a goodt portion of my life has been bizarrely intertwined with Gabriel and his various tours. To answer that question properly my gut tells me that I need to channel Lance and post a 8+ paragraph contractually obligated circumlocution. I have a feeling at least 2 people might find that interesting or at least amusing.

Went to the 88 Worcester SO tour. Liked it so much I went to the MSG show a few days later.
In Worcester, during "lay your hands on me" Peter fell backwards onto the crowd and crowd surfed for a bit then he was passed back onto the stage to finish the song.
Same thing at the MSG show except the crowd wouldn't give Peter back. His crew came out and tried to pull him back.
A tug of war ensued using Peter Gabriel as the rope.

We saw Gabriel at the Greek
We saw Gabriel at the Greek Theater in Los Angeles back in 1980.The seats were next to the aisle, and I gave PG good "slap" when he went by us after the show was over, lol. (Before the show started, the crowd cheered from the back of the venue, with band members holding lights, walking down the aisles to the stage. Got to "slap" Tony Levin on his way down). Gabriel was on a shoestring budget in ‘80 so he got David Rhodes, the guitar player from the opening act “random hold”, to play guitar for him as well. David has been Gabriel’s primary guitar player ever since. We saw Rhodes fist gig with Gabriel. It was the second show on the American tour.
(in 77, Fripp would be introduced as "Dusty Rhodes")
