I'm sure these are very good but there have been high quality recordings/SBDs of these shows circulating pretty much since they took place. What gives, aside from the relatively simple clean-ups and fancy box artwork add-ons? Cha-chingz.
I was listening to one of those 'official' release Jerry shows from the 70's, and it was one of the most ramshackle performances I've heard, chock full of glaring mistakes. I couldn't believe they put this out.
>>>>Weird that the listening party at the presale link is not from the 2/23/74 release.
The dead.net listening party reference to 1971 has got to be a typo - none of those three songs existed in 1971. Probably is from the Winterland 74 release.
As I recall reading the condenser mics were used as part of a set up with two for each singer and set out of phase to avoid feedback that would have occurred with the wall of sound. In other words they had to abandon the classic sm58 and other mics due to the sheer volume of the WOS and that was the solution that was developed.
Arrived just in time to put on my phone for my trip to Kauai. Hoping Billy hasn't left for the mainland yet for rehearsals and will play something small and unannounced there, which he sometimes does before he leaves.
I agree that it was a great theory and the mic set up worked at the time for the performance, I also agree that they didn't translate into well recorded vocals

Not a fan of 74 vocals at all
Not a fan of 74 vocals at all. Beautiful voices stymied by shitty little weak ass condenser mics.
Who's fucking brainless idea was it to use them ? Glad that experiment didn't last long.

Condenser Mics pick up much less ambient noise, and using two out of phase eliminated feedback. Smrt cookies engineers they were!
