Pink Talking Fish

Forums:

Saw these guys on Sunday night and they we great.   The idea of a band playing Pink Floyd, Talking Heads, and Phish covers might sound hokey, but they pulled it off and then some.   All very talented musicians and the show was greater than the sum of the songs.  The bass player is a Particle Dude.

Many Phish and Pink Floyd tunes are perfect vehicles for extended psychedelic jams and they didn't hold back and melded them with modal style TH songs like Slippery People and Girlfriend's Better:

Set 1:

Alumni Blues > Letter To Jimmy Page > Alumni Blues, And She Was, Young Lust, Roggae, Girlfriend Is Better, The Thin Ice > Divided Sky

Set 2:

Dogs > Time Loves A Hero > Slippery People, You Enjoy Myself >Several Species of Small Furry Animals Gathered Together in a Cave and Grooving with a Pict>Shine On You Crazy Diamond > You Enjoy Myself, Once In A Lifetime, Wish You Were Here

And the crowd was a bunch of younger people and my buddies and I were some of the oldest people in the house.   I figure that more than half the audience was born after Junta came out.

I particularly liked the Tennessee Jed / Ocelot mash up that I witnessed on the skull and roses livestream

I really like this band as well.

I'm neither a fan of cover bands or streams, but when they played a three-night run at the Sweetwater a few years ago all three shows were streamed, so I figured I'd watch for a few minutes just to see what they were about. I ended up watching all three shows start to finish.

Phish, with all it's techno-babble and fast playing is not an easy band to cover, so at first I was a bit shocked at how well they did that. But beyond their technical ability, what surprised me and continues to is just how good they are as a band overall, how creative they are with the three songbooks and how well they jam.

People who don't like Phish probably won't like these guys, and I'm sure they were the least favorite group at the Dead fest last weekend, but count me as a fan.

Thanks for the review Ken.  How is the new club?

It's actually the basement of the old Melody Ballroom.   I hadn't been there before, but my friends I was with had actually played the room before on the same stage, so it's not exactly "new."    It's been refurbished and they took out some walls to make a larger space.   Really nice room with huge dance flood and great sound.   Sort of like a much larger and far less shitty version of the Goodfoot with a higher ceiling.

My only complaint was that the bar served beers of inconsistent size in random plastic glasses.   Some were regular pint size glasses while some were served in tall, skinny cocktail glasses that contained less beer (not just an optical illusion).

Looking forward to seeing Moonalice there next month.

I really enjoyed them at my first show. Sadly Not since.
