Yep, I take it as an ominous sign ... especially in light of how he had appeared to be a staunch institutionalist in a recent interview. IOW, perhaps he's become more of a realist?
Given how the GOP has jumped the train off the tracks, and how much of Trump's base now resembles something akin to a rabid dog in their efforts to use force and lies to subvert our Democracy, would it really be a stretch for President Biden to extend Secret Service protection to all Dem Senators; at least until the successor of Justice Breyer's seat on the SCOTUS is sworn in?
If forces out there are willing to throw almost ANYTHING at the wall to see what sticks to retain the power of the POTUS, why would SCOTUS be immune from out of bounds radical activities to do the same?
And I would offer that a democracy which requires that high a level of police protection is already socially and politically insolvent<<<
Why couldn't it be just a few radicalized bad apples that spoil the bunch in a more targeted / limited capacity vs. a more widespread "night of the long knives" sort of subversion that is reflective of more widespread institutional rot?
We can thank Trump for telling people not to vote in GA during the run off that gave us the 50 Dem Senators. Manchin has voted for every single one of Bidens more than 40 appointments to the federal bench which is why the whole he is as bad as Republican is so stupid. BTW more than 40 is an all time record.
There will be a black women, and there is really nothing the Republicans can do, and since it will still be 7-3 they won't do anything. We all need to be sending Justice Thomas gift baskets full of jerky and buttery baked goods.
I also forgot to thank the Libertarian who ran against Perdue in the general election in GA and pulled away just enough votes to force Perdue into the runoff. That's the most a Libertarian has every contributed to society. Elections have consequences.
There will be a black women, and there is really nothing the Republicans can do<<<
IOW, this dynamic will STILL make them feel as if they are being backed into a corner - EVEN with a large majority.
While assassinations are (hopefully) very unlikely, I don't think this card can be removed entirely from the deck if members of the "dominant caste" feel they're being backed into a corner. You and I might not see it as such, but they've been on a war footing for quite some time ... and it's only been escalating in recent times.
I'm wrong again. The nominee has to get out of the Judiciary which for some fucking reason is even 11 - 11. One of these Republicans will have to vote for the nominee to get out of committee.
Couldn't the chair of the judiciary committee (Dick Durban) still hold a vote and move the nomination to the senate with no recommendation even if the committee has not approved the nominee? That would be unorthodox for sure, but couldn't it be done as a purely procedural matter?
Don't know about procedural but I think we can count on Sasse. He is pretty anti Trump and I don't think he is running again. That said Cruz, Cotton, and Hawley will all be competing to see who can be the most disrespectful.
There will be a black women, and there is really nothing the Republicans can do<<<
So because sleepy joe could potentially nominate a black woman to sit on the supreme court, this might require a huge expansion of secret service police because a couple maga kooks are potentially planning to kill all of the democrat senators in order to stop him? Did I get that right?
Couldn't the chair of the judiciary committee (Dick Durban) still hold a vote and move the nomination to the senate with no recommendation even if the committee has not approved the nominee? That would be unorthodox for sure, but couldn't it be done as a purely procedural matter?<<<
I don't really know, but I suspect the Senate as a body could likely use a simple majority to get around any procedural matter; with the exception of super-majority votes that are explicitly enumerated in the Constitution.
Only one Dem Senator in a GOP controlled state is all that would be necessary.
So it was only a "couple maga kooks" on January 6th, or wasn't it more into the thousands? Do you believe the time and place of January 6th was somehow arbitrary and ought to warrant a "kookish" moniker to those who participated in the violence that interrupted the transfer of power?
Let's face it, the GOP is not admitting to the full nature and scope of January 6th ... when it's now all out in plain sight, so why should those of us who are seeking to defend our Republic from an insurgency accept the "arguments" by those who claim there wasn't an insurrection nor that it might be still in mid-stride at this very moment? If so, why should it be limited in scope and not adapt to current events as they unfold?
Without knowing which maga kooks or which senator we are talking about, too many what ifs. Seems paranoid. Elected politicians accept and understand there is considerable element of physical risk that comes with being an elected politician. In a country with as many guns as the United States, that's just the reality of it.
Either way hypothetically constructing legions "more police", with more guns, to police democracy, is probably something we aren't likely to agree on. Refer to the insolvent part above.
The Republicans will have a hard time fighting this nominee, so many ways it can backfire in their faces (is that even a possibility anymore???)... but so far, the Democrats have been having great success of getting judges approved (Manchin's been in full support, etc). Might be in their better interests to duck this one out, but we'll see what happens...
I agree with Jon Meacham's sentiment about restoring the gravity / dignity to high office in general, but I believe it's a fantasy at this stage of the game. The genie is out of the bottle. Or, was it simply "theater" for violent mob that breached our nation'd Capitol to chant to hang the VP ... since it never actually occurred?
Either way hypothetically constructing legions "more police", with more guns, to police democracy, is probably something we aren't likely to agree on. Refer to the insolvent part above.<<<
Perhaps the first step is admitting there's a problem?
IMO, we should consider if there's a way to establish a permanent independent OSC; established as a constant oversight agency to run point on countering attacks to directly subvert any high office. Yeah, it could be "turned" as well, but how can we not consider the possibility that we've already crossed the rubicon?
Might be in their better interests to duck this one out, but we'll see what happens... <<<
IMO, I believe it's in the best interest of Dems to put it out there immediately the process will take no longer than ACB (27 days?) ... this 50/50 split is RAZOR thin & GOP have proven time and time again they're willing to do next to anything to weild raw power.
Was Germany not actually at war with Poland when they sent in their troops across the border disguised as Polish soldiers for pre-ops?
What I'm alluding to is that Trumpism has already shown its willingness to cross the lines from "narrative" -> "boots on the ground"; why should we not be prepared for another transgression? Has Trumpism ever not resembled a ratchet in terms of its trajectory to "double down"?
Hey QAnoners, clearly Joe Biden will name Kamala Harris to the Supreme Court, replace her as veep with Hillary Clinton, and then resign. Isn't that the plan?
Seth Meyers: “After President Biden said he will stand by his commitment to appoint a black woman to the Supreme Court, a Fox News panel criticized the administration’s selection process. I’ll take a wild guess and say they have exactly two problems with a black woman.”
Yeah and Fox forgets that Ronald Reagan said he would appoint a women and then appointed Sandra Day. In today's Republican Party Reagan is a communist.
