I canceled my Spotify account yesterday because of this.
A coalition of hundreds of doctors and public health experts have called out Spotify for allowing Joe Rogan to spread “false and societally harmful assertions” about the coronavirus and vaccination on the streaming platform that hosts his wildly popular podcast.
In an open letter published Monday, more than 270 medical professionals urge Spotify to stop “enabling its hosted media to damage public trust in scientific research and sow doubt in the credibility of data-driven guidance.” Rogan, whose show reaches an estimated audience of 11 million people an episode, has repeatedly downplayed the need for coronavirus vaccines and used his platform to flirt with misinformation about covid-19.
Doctors and medical professionals who signed the letter took umbrage with one recent episode in particular featuring Robert Malone, a physician who bills himself as having played a key role in the creation of mRNA vaccines. Malone has since become a prominent skeptic of the coronavirus vaccines that have been crafted using the technology, often “promoting baseless conspiracy theories,” according to the coalition.
Malone used Rogan’s platform to promote “an unfounded theory that societal leaders have ‘hypnotized’ the public,” the group wrote, adding that the physician’s false claim has been debunked.
“Notably, Dr. Malone is one of two recent JRE guests who has compared pandemic policies to the Holocaust,” the letter adds. “These actions are not only objectionable and offensive, but also medically and culturally dangerous.”

There are between 2.9 and 3.2 million podcasts on Spotify. A person needs to specifically search out a podcast. It isn't a linear force-feeding format. I'm not sure if there is anything easier to do than not listen to a specific podcaster.
Even if Neil does have the right to do this (there may be other stakeholders involved) he could always just remove his music from Spotify without involving Rogan. Just take your music down if you don't agree with Spotify's overall platform. Easy peasy. But the notion of "it's either this one podcast or my music" is so child-like and entitled. Just plain embarrassing for Shakey.
Ok Racket, i'll take the bait... WTF does Oregon have to do w/ any of this (No ties to Rogan, no ties to Neil Young, and New England is the Whitest part of the country)
Based on the most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau, the ten whitest U.S. states are:
Maine - 94.4%
Vermont - 94.2%
West Virginia - 93.5%
New Hampshire - 93.1%
Idaho - 93.0%
Wyoming - 92.5%
Iowa - 90.6%
Utah - 90.6%
Montana - 88.9%
Nebraska - 88.1%
Here are the 10 states with the largest white population:
Most of us "normal people" here and by that I mean people who don't believe that the schools are putting litter boxes in the bathrooms to accommodate students who identify as furies (yes that is a real thing the Ohio Republican party sent out as their outrage of the week) are at a huge political disadvantage because we cluster in cities and blue states.
What we do have is economic power that we better start using. Rogan, Fox, Sinclair are normalizing our march toward authoritarian fact free government and should be boycotted along with all the companines that associate with them.
So much for free speech and rocking in the free world<<<
When our Democracy is in the midst of trying to endure an insurrection, what is wrong with total economic warfare if the very real possibility that free speech might be rendered meaningless if those who continue to attack our Republic are ultimately successful?
I don’t believe this a free speech issue, it is more an issue of commerce and a business decision. Neil Young believes that he and his music represents a point of view that is in direct opposition to Joe Rogan’s. I think what his saying is actually completely in line with his history of anti corporate selling out. He is will to lose whatever revenue he gets from Spotify because he believes they are complicit in spreading lies and doesn't want them to use the profits they make on his music to perpetuate those lies. That is his business decision to make.
I have made decisions over the years in regards to my business to not sell certain retailers because of their political positions. That is my business decision to make. Now, was I alone going to change that corporate culture, no. But I felt good about my decision knowing that the profits they would make off my products would not contribute to their political agenda.

From a larger perspective, the Boomer Hippies have come full circle. Anti-establishment in their youth and now eager to attack anyone who questions the narrative of the global establishment.
It's all very fascinating to watch it unfold. Pass the popcorn.
When did riding the MAGA-grift-gravy-train become questioning the establishment narrative. Is that what Q is doing too? He changed - he used to bring people on and listen to them, but since Covid he has decided he is the expert by doing his own research. I mean the guy made his living pressuring desperate people to eat bugs. I don't think he should be held up as beacon of integrity.
Once again, it's so easy not to listen to one of millions of podcasts and entertainment channels that are out there.
I have no dog in this race but if Joe Rogan's dialogue format appeals to people, let them listen. It's not a preformatted TV narrative, which is a much more dangerous element. People go on and talk. It might be controversial, some of it might be wrong, but it's open and transparent. People (liberals) so freaked out by a comedian podcaster. Many of them who have never listened to second of the show.
I don't know Joe Rogan, but I do know that anyone who's attempting to influence people to remain unvaccinated doesn't deserve my support in any form. He has the right to get paid for his shit, but I won't support the people who pay him.
We applaud Neil Young for calling out Spotify for hosting the Rogan podcast. We hope Spotify will recognize that it made a mistake and cancel the podcast. Unlike Neil Young, Moonalice is not in a position to walk away from the dominant platform in streaming. You, our fans, do have that option. If you feel more comfortable moving to another platform, we encourage you to do so. Apple is a good choice.
The only comedian I’m taking medical advice from is Wavy Gravy. Maybe George Carlin. Possibly Rodney Dangerfield.
Isn't Joe Rogan the guy that made a fortune convincing desperate people to do ridiculous things ( like eat maggot-infested cow sphincter)? Nothing's changed. Guy has found his niche.
And no, I've never tuned in, is there are pod cast you're especially fond of?<<<
I'd imagine if you listened to Joe once in awhile, you'd probably start to question what the hub bub is all about. Just people talking. It really ain't all that.
I don't tune into Rogan that much anymore. Usually only if he has a guest that particularly interests me. I do really like Tim Dillon's podcast. He's able to expertly navigate the topics of the zeitgeist in a funny and ridiculous manner. Definitely an up and comer. Marc Maron's WTF is always a good stand by. Joey Diaz are Ari Shaffir are in the rotation but they are an acquired taste. Other than that, a sports pod or two.
I feel like this move might make NY feel good but most likely will result in tons of free advertising for Rogan's podcast and backfire in the long run.
I try not to use spotify unless a smalltime artist I'm interested in posts a new song on there and want to give their numbers a lil tiny boost- which happens about twice a year. There are better platforms than apple and spotify for artists. Tidal pays artists the most out of all, considerably more than apple or spotify
I heard Barry Manilow pulled his and now this from Joni. Won't be the last.
“I’ve decided to remove all my music from Spotify. Irresponsible people are spreading lies that are costing people their lives. I stand in solidarity with Neil Young and the global scientific and medical communities on this issue.” —Joni Mitchell, January 28, 2022
"Spotify's market capitalization fell about $2.1 billion over a three-day span this week, coming after folk rocker Neil Young yanked his songs from the audio-streaming giant to protest Joe Rogan's misinformation-spreading podcast. ... Spotify stock closed Thursday (Jan. 27) at a 19-month low of $171.32/share.1 day ago"
>When the speech doesn't fit the narrative must cancel<
Are you referring to Republican's efforts to ban books in schools? Or possibly Republican's efforts to prohibit schools from teaching students about the USA"s racist history?
When the speech doesn't fit the narrative must cancel.<<<
Is there something about an insurrection that ought to be granted immunity from cancelation?
It might be easy enough to compartmentalize the misinformation related to the pandemic as being it's "own thing", but is it really? Or, does it share its headwaters with Trumpism at its core?
Pulling from Spotify, My Pillow, etc. should be the tip of the iceberg. There should be an app that alerts us when we're about to spend a dime on any business that supports Trumpism in any of its incarnations. IMO, Trumpism needs to be deprived of the "O2" it needs to stay alive and grow ... and $$$ seems to be part of its lifeblood. Would not total economic warfare be better than real civil war? ... or a trend toward getting thrown out of windows if you disagree with whatever boss is above you?
>>> Would not total economic warfare be better than real civil war?
Exactly. Non Trump supporting America is at a huge political disadvantage because of the Electoral College and the fact that Montana gets two Senators for less population than DC that gets no Senators. But we do hold all the cards economically and it's time to make corporate America understand that when you get in bed with Trumpism, you will take a hit to your bottom line. Just ask AT&T how that sponsorship of OAN is going for them.
There are 2,500 hundred people a day dying from Covid and 98% of them are unvaxed because they listen to people like Rogan. If you want to make money on that fine that is your choice. All Neil Young did is say this place smells like dog shit now and I'm going to leave. Spotify is pretending that it doesn't smell and trying to convince everyone of that fact when anyone with a nose can tell you it does.
if you want rogan taken off the air for making a racist joke, but voted for joe biden despite his history of supporting inherently racist and deeply broken criminal justice policies, you are officially a fucking idiot
^It's quite easy to have both have voted for Biden and to like to see Joe Rogan's show pulled.
Frankly, it's fucking idiotic to compare the two.
The presidency is not a podcast, the position must be filled. And the choice was between Biden and a literal fascist.
Rogan is an asshole, spewing idiotic, misinformed, racist bullshit over the airwaves.
Personally, i don't give a damn if his show is pulled. Liking Rogan is one of those litmus tests for me. Confederate belt buckle, you're an asshole... Trump flag, you're an asshole... Joe Rogan fan, you're an asshole.
"if you want rogan taken off the air for making a racist joke, but voted..."
translated
"Watch carefully as I erect a strawman and then use it to compare to something completely and totally unrelated in order to half-ass defend my fucking idiot life coach..."
>>>if you want rogan taken off the air for making a racist joke
It was never about taking Rogan off the air. He will always be on the air in one way or another. It's about Spotify a billion dollar media company monetizing disinformation. If we normalize the fact that media companies who by their size alone can increase an audience someone has and then make money of spewing hate and disinformation - then that is what they will do.
I'm also so tired of the it was only a racist joke - come on people it's not that serious. I managed to stop telling racist jokes about 40 years ago and my life is just fine. It's not hard. If you are still doing it then maybe it's time to own it.
Young was diagnosed with polio in 1951, four years before the vaccine for the life-threatening disease became available, and in his 2012 autobiography “Waging Heavy Peace,” recounts his time spent in Toronto’s Sick Children’s Hospital. Not only did he have to relearn how to walk, but the experience also left him with a lifelong limp and required him to frequently wear a back brace while performing live.
"Liking Rogan is one of those litmus tests for me. Confederate belt buckle, you're an asshole... Trump flag, you're an asshole... Joe Rogan fan, you're an asshole. "
Got that right. And you assholes are certainly loud, and have a lot of money backing you for its own ends (and those ends probably not what you think they are), but you are a shrinking minority in the U.S. and are doomed to fail. The majority of your fellow citizens are pushing back against the hatred and lies, the disregard for facts and science. We have had enough of your fucking bullshit.
Yeah you got a lot accomplished Neil. I never fucking heard of Joe Rogan till you took your little hissy fit and ran away, now he's bigger than ever. Don't like being associated with hate ??? LOLOLOLOLOL that's a hoot, you better move back home to Canada. Oh wait, looks like they've also got their heads up their ass with that trucker covid protest shutting everything down. Sorry Neil, you failed.

There are between 2.9 and 3.2
There are between 2.9 and 3.2 million podcasts on Spotify.

I don’t believe this a free

>>> Would not total economic

Never knew Young had Polio.
Never knew Young had Polio.
Makes sense he would take a stand on this issue.
