Was watching this on the Eugene 11pm news, and the anchors had no clue what the WOW hall was... considering i've been going there for over 40 years, that was a bit disappointing, but not as disappointed as hearing about the GSW's... (many great memories there, including hangin out w/ Steve Kimock after one of their early Zero tours 35 years ago or so).
Was a hip hop show, some guy w/ a hoodie took a bunch ~ 10 shots at folks gathered around the back door, then ran away... that's all i've gotten so far....
This is profoundly sad and upsetting. The WOW (Woodmen of the World) Hall has always been a place for community, for concerts, dancing, classes, gatherings. It's got a floating floor that's great for dancing. If there's ever been conflict, it's been the result of alcohol, and I've never heard of anyone using guns there. The world is a changing place.
Ugh. I saw this headline too... hope staff smudges the property inside and out before the next show, to refresh the good energy that's in those boards.
Signs of the times. We have more gun violence going on in King County now. The new Seattle mayor, Bruce Harrell is tasked with managing that now, as their police force diminishes. We're not the only place dealing with heightened sense of anarchy.
A few years ago, a hip-hop performance at Chop Suey (a Capitol Hill nightclub) was interrupted when a performer was shot and killed onstage by someone coming through the back door upset about a drug deal. I wasn't there that night, but I've been there since, and thought about how strange and frightening that must have been for everyone there.
For various reasons that would most likely be hotly debated, Hip Hop has had issues with gun violence nearly since it's inception. I guess this gets more taken for granted in bigger cities, but is surprising when it happens in Eugene.
Either way, hoping things chill down there, and that the wounded heal.
>>>Tell us about the multiple mass shootings you have been in the middle of<<<
Mass shootings?
Maybe not, but rubber bullets into violent groups two different times, four times (at best recollection) hoards of "youths" crashing through gates, roaming through crowds & beating anyone in their path (I could be more graphically detailed, but blood & broken teeth & ripped flesh is such a downer) one backstage shooting death at a Wiz Kalifa show where I was maybe 100 feet away at the moment of the "action", seeing the shooting and watching a man die right in front of me, and more times than I can count being in the middle of groups of "fans" ready, willing and actively violent towards anyone/everyone in their way.
Obviously, the examples of my personal experience is not the majority of the live rap experience, it's not even the majority of my live rap experience, it's just a basic (and incomplete) list of examples of what I've experienced.
And I'm betting a buck it's more experience involving live rap shows than anyone else reading this has.
Oh yeah, LOTS of fist fights in my experience at country shows, some real shitshow experiences there for sure, and a crazy woman once bit me in the arm at a Rolling Stones show (25 years later I still have a scar) but never a shooting or the type of unfocused general violence that I routinely have witnessed at rap/hiphop shows.
As for the GD, lots of issues and trouble but very little overt violence (but still existing, in Shakedown mostly, and the gate crashers that scene spawned).
I realize I'm painting a bleak picture of what a rap show is like, or more what they were like when I was in the middle of the biggest rap shows in the world mostly 20 - 30 years ago, and to be fair, the Wiz Khalifa event in 2014 was totally chill in the crowd, the shooting was backstage, involving money & drugs, but especially being so close to it, it became just another notch in my hiphop belt.
Again, it's all just my personal experience, which is not close to the entirely of the experience. Just mine. Obviously, I'm a bit tainted.
Still, if I had teenage kids now who wanted to go to a rap/hiphop show, I would definitely let them go, I would just tell them to keep their eyes open, be aware of their surroundings and don't hang around outside the venue. Of course I'd say that about almost any show, but rap shows more for sure.
I've always felt that it's not really rock 'n roll if there isn't at least a touch of danger involved. Unfortunately, I've just personally seen way too much real danger at the rap shows I've been at.
Seen dozens of shows there, even Early moe. back in 1997. Always fun to lurk in the Basement and slurp a couple Beers on a chilly winter night, watch the Concert on TV.
The most threatened I've ever felt there is forgetting which side of the Bleachers I left my Coat, but it all worked out.
I was even at the Electric Apricot show, maybe I'm in some of the outtakes; I was out there on the Sidewalk when they were filming one of the actresses.
Where does one begin to draw that line in the sand ? Ban Rap / Thug culture shows from some venues ? Maybe do away with EDM shows ? It's really up to the venue.

Come up for Zero in PDX on Sunday Feb. 6.. Never miss a Sunday show.
Vibes to the victims. Just awful, especially at such a place usually associated with good vibes and dancing.
