Only a few more days until NYE, and with so many shows getting the covid shutdown, whatcha gonna do???
I was originally planning on the local reopening of the Old World Deli in Corvallis (1 solo performer, 2 bands, all free, along with great new and old classics from the revamped kitchen!!!). A musician friend bought it, poured shit tons of cash into it. Another musician / chef friend has taken over the kitchen, and yet another musician friend did the majority of the remodeling (and new sound install). Needless to say, it's going to rock, just maybe not this Friday as planned (waiting on the final word, but w/ all the snow this week, likely canceled).
So, will anybody be making it to any shows???
What streams are available this weekend you're dialing in? (Billy and the Kids replay of redrocks?)
What NYE shows did you attend?
Any fave shows from NYE past?
Any fave memories from NYE past?
Happy NYE zoners, may 2022 be blessing not a curse!!!

Had a couple rooms at the Holiday Inn in New Haven for that ABB show. Hosted pure hedonistic parties before and after the concert. Escaped hall stairway left as cops were coming up hall stairway right at about 4am. Not sure what happened to most of the partiers but we took a few with us to some graveyard we found to finish up the booze. One hell of a night/day

Stu is out.
Stu is out.
From Stu Allen's crew:
"With a heavy heart....due to the recent spike in new cases as a result of the Omicron variant, with the city of Richmond, the Artists and the Venue, we have made the decision to cancel the New Years run that were to take place on 12/30, 12/31 and 1/1. We feel that this is the only safe way forward for our fans, crew, families and ourselves. Our rapid testing company, Kyla, had to back out of their contract due to the seriousness of the virus so that also weighed on this decision. The health and safety of our musical community is always the top priority. It is a hard and unfortunate call to make but we feel it is the right one. While we know you all are disappointed, please know that we are as well. We worked very hard to navigate COVID and the needs of the community to pull this off.
Happy New Year to all of you and we look forward to seeing you down the road.
*Refunds will be issued ASAP."

‘New Day’s Lyric’
‘New Day’s Lyric’
May this be the day
We come together.
Mourning, we come to mend,
Withered, we come to weather,
Torn, we come to tend,
Battered, we come to better.
Tethered by this year of yearning,
We are learning
That though we weren’t ready for this,
We have been readied by it.
Steadily we vow that no matter
How we are weighed down,
We must always pave a way forward.
This hope is our door, our portal.
Even if we never get back to normal,
Someday we can venture beyond it,
To leave the known and take the first steps.
So let us not return to what was normal,
But reach toward what is next.
What was cursed, we will cure.
What was plagued, we will prove pure.
Where we tend to argue, we will try to agree,
Those fortunes we forswore, now the future we foresee,
Where we weren’t aware, we’re now awake;
Those moments we missed
Are now these moments we make,
The moments we meet,
And our hearts, once all together beaten,
Now all together beat.
Come, look up with kindness yet,
For even solace can be sourced from sorrow.
We remember, not just for the sake of yesterday,
But to take on tomorrow.
We heed this old spirit,
In a new day’s lyric,
In our hearts, we hear it:
For auld lang syne, my dear,
For auld lang syne.
Be bold, sang Time this year,
Be bold, sang Time,
For when you honor yesterday,
Tomorrow ye will find.
Know what we’ve fought
Need not be forgot nor for none.
It defines us, binds us as one,
Come over, join this day just begun.
For wherever we come together,
We will forever overcome.
— Amanda Gorman

>>>What NYE shows did you
>>>What NYE shows did you attend?
I love being among the people on NYE, as it's both a celebration of a story now told and the mystery of an untold story about to begin, stories that involve ALL of us, so concerts on NYE have always been a special thing for me and I have been to many, both with the GD and many others over the years.
My first was closing down Winterland, which as a teenager had a profound effect on me, really to this day. Somehow I got shut out of every one at the Oakland Aud/Kaiser, but I was at every one at the Oakland Coliseum. Then there were all the others I've worked or been to.
>>>Any fave shows from NYE past?
Obviously 12/31/78 for so many reasons, and then to varying degrees pretty much every one since.
>>>Any fave memories from NYE past?
A few that immediately come to mind... 1990 at the Coliseum (Bill Graham's final one). I had the greatest gig in the world that night, working security at the front of the mixer, my only job to keep the small walkway along the front clear. The best spot in the venue with all the authority to tell all the rest of you fuckers to get out of my way. Also, being able to park right next to the building, walk in and hang out in the backstage area, playing a short pickup basketball game with Bruce Hornsby & other crew and staff before the show. THAT was a fun night.
Another good memory is from the mid-90s when BGP did a "Block Party" for a couple of years in SF, taking over two or three blocks of the Embarcadero on either side of the Ferry Building and a block or so of Market Street from the Embarcadero up to the Hyatt Regency, with various large & small tents all over with multiple acts, and multiple rooms inside the Hyatt with comedy, salsa & other types of bands. My job was booking and supervising an usher crew of about 90 people, spread out all over the area in every venue, as well as at the front gates. It was a ton of work and pressure, with the operation managers continually calling me to maneuver my staff from one place to another based on where the masses decided they wanted to be.
I was pretty happy when they decided not to continue those after a couple of years, but the feeling of accomplishment and relief after midnight, when everything settled into just a big party, the pride I felt for my staff who worked their asses off while getting run from one venue to another, and the satisfaction I felt being a part of a great team still resonates all these years later.
A couple of other random ones - working the box office for the Greyboy Allstars at the Warfield one year, and after getting cut being able to go downstairs where a huge party was raging in every dressing room, enjoying all of that and then going back up to the venue and grooving with that great band.
Working a show at the Kezar Pavilion, a small & completely decrepit old dump of a gym at the foot of Golden Gate Park, with the Mother Hips, String Cheese Incident & Leftover Salmon. There were big shows happening all over the Bay Area that night so that little Kezar show got the short shrift on staff, so just a handful of us did the whole thing, from getting the venue set up, working the gates to managing the room, controlling the makeshift bar, to setting up and pulling off the midnight parade, all while running across the street to the Kezar Pub every hour or so to slam down a few shots and then go back to work. It was a great and really fun night, and as I was told later by the old-time BGP manager who was in charge of that show and who went back with the company to the Fillmore West days, THAT was an old-school show.
As for tonight, for the second year in a row I'll be laying low at home, but I still love NYE and I do love to tell stories, and I could tell a whole bunch more, but it's likely that no one has read this far, so I'll stop now.
Enjoy the night folks. Remember, it's a celebration of a story now complete, and it's also the beginning of an unknown story yet to unfold. And we're ALL in the stories together.
And that's far out.
Happy New Year!!!
