Steely Dan, The CIA and the acid anthem of ‘Kid Charlemagne’

https://faroutmagazine.co.uk/steely-dan-acid-anthem-kid-charlemagne-cia/...

<<It seems very un-1960s-like to mention admin, but in 1963, the patent for LSD expired, and a lot of the culture thereafter spun out from that tie-dye three years where mind-bending was basically legalised. It wasn’t just the hippies at it either. The CIA, an organisation that has seemingly welcomed more well-manicured arseholes than every one of Hugh Hefner’s pool parties combined, were dabbling in its kaleidoscopic properties to no end. Somewhere from this melee of psychedelic mania derives the Steely Dan acid anthem ‘Kid Charlemagne’. Be forewarned before you trip down this rabbit hole things get fairly strange, dude.

In the opening stanza of the track, Donald Fagen sings, “On the hill the stuff was laced with kerosene, but yours was kitchen clean.” There was only one place in the San Francisco valley where you could get acid of that purity — enter the protagonist of the song, the famed acid chemist Owsley Stanley: the premiere acid man of the east coast.

Augustus Owsley Stanley III, to give him his full name, was an American audio engineer by day and a clandestine chemist also by day, night and sometimes morning. In perhaps the most 1960s tale ever put to print, Stanley became soundman for the Grateful Dead after he met them at one of Ken Kesey’s (author of One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest) acid parties. Aside from mixing the wall of sound that blasted ‘The Dead’ gigs into a sonic maelstrom and assisting in the design of their now-iconic logo, Stanley was also the first known individual to casually begin manufacturing LSD en masse........ Hayes Carll - She Left Me for Jesus

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vU0gJefGW-M

She's givin' up whiskey
And taken up wine
Why, she prays for his troubles
And has forgot about mine
I'm a gonna get even
I can't handle the shame
Why the last time we made love
She even called out his name

She left me for Jesus
And that just ain't fair
She says, that he's perfect.
How could I compare
She says, I should find him
And I'll know peace at last
But if I ever find Jesus
I'm kickin' his ass

It could have been Carlos
Or even Billy or Ted
But if I ever find Jesus
He's gonna wish he were dead
Ahhh, man

Steely Dan live at Shoreline Amphitheater, Mountain View, CA 1993

>>90's Eugene rocker Olen Kent had been missing for more than a decade. During that time he was moving from place to place in rural Oregon, struggling with homelessness as well as health and mental issues. Though fans and former bandmates were looking, nobody could find him.

But we did find the masters for his band's unfinished 1996 album, "Spinning Somewhere" by The Dark. Due to a typical band-flavored drama, the project had been abandoned in the studio and left untouched for almost 15 years before being rediscovered. But by then, Olen himself had disappeared back into the wilderness. We did a mix, and released the record in 2014, hoping that it might help us find the author, to no avail.

Well... after all these years, on Dec 2nd two of his bandmates finally found Olen in the wilds of Oregon and played the record for him on a car stereo. This is his reaction on hearing the finished title track for the first time.

You're welcome , Ras.

I'm a fan of his teachings too, but I'm not a fan of his interpreters.

And I absolutely love good lyrics in a song, regardless of the genre.

Yer a smart man joe. The Apostles were pretty awesome at interpreting, but they heard His words directly and saw first hand what was happening. Jesus was a total trip, but once man initially saw the extent of His popularity and came up with ways to capitalize ($$)  on it,  that religion got tainted. As everything that man gets ahold of usually does.

This one kills me. Are they holding back tears or laughter ?

Hearing Fripp sing this makes me tear up with joy.
