12/5: 50 Years Ago-Felt Forum 40 Years Ago-Market Square Arena

Forums:

One of, if not my first, bootleg cassettes, another year or two before seeing a show.

Played into the ground on a little mono deck with a handle.  Classic Bill Graham intro & a fine FM broadcast.  "Robert Weir is a very dirty softball player."

Ten years later, drove about 700 miles, one of the few shows I liked a lot more after hearing it on tape.  Best of the late, late Fall '81 Tour, other than a couple vocal misses on Stella, this is a real good one.

Three jam tunes in a row, Birdsong>Let it Grow then Shakedown to open set 2.  RR Blues 4th song of the 2nd set?  Elvis in Vegas version of CC Rider and only one more version of Passenger, 12/27/81.

Great call, Krab.

In 1977, I bought a bootleg album of this Felt Forum show at the good ole Now & Then Shop in New Hope, PA.  It had a picture of Jerry on the cover in that rarely worn black shirt with the skeletons all over it. It was a pressing of the FM broadcast--I still have it somewhere. Used to play the shit out of I Wash My Hands because it is one of the only versions they did of this--maybe a few others--I forget  Also, great early versions of Tennessee Jed and Mister Charlie from the Felt.  A few months later at another Now & Then Shop visit, maybe in early 1978, they had the Sunflower Records bootleg album recorded at the Avalon in 1966--picked that up too along with an original Hooteroll album.  That one, and Hooteroll vanished years ago but the Felt Forum show was now iconic.  Many great concerts and boxing matches at the old Felt Forum--a gem within MSG

That Felt forum show, I also had a bootleg LP, That I had won for a Quarter on the Boardwalk, but I also had it on 8 track recorded off WNEW, That show made me a Dead head. " Is Someone Smoking Coconuts Out There?"  I was also in attendance at the Market square arena show and have masters of it, We hit that> Chicago >Des Moines>Colorado, What a ride to and fro...

I have 2 boots from that show, same 9 songs, English version has the skull jacket, Canadian version has a picture of Garcia from the early 70's.  Has those made up bootleg song titles like Only Love Can Fill & We Can Share.  Head shop named Critters sold bootlegs & Sunflower Records back then, now it's a dentist's office.

That show made me a Dead head>>>Probably quite a few heads of a certain age will concur.

Yea, Krab, but when this Felt form show came out, it pre-dates Europe 72 and Reflections in 1976 that had Comes a Time so totally plausible for the boots they were just guessing at the names/titles of the songs as they were brand spanking new.  I concur on this show as cementing my Deadhedness even deeper--saw my first show in 76 but this was one of my earliest boots and because it was an LP, played the shit out of it.  Didn't know there is a Canuck version of the LP-cool. I downloaded the Archive.org version today as I hadn't listened to this in like 20 years.  71 is one of my favorite GD periods. Thanks for the reminder.  Here is that jacket Garcia wore from the boot LP cover
