On March 5, 1971, the Grateful Dead performed at a Black Panther Party benefit held at the Oakland Auditorium Arena that was also Newton's birthday celebration. There are no tapes from the show, and the setlist — outside of a purported “Turn On Your Lovelight” — remains unknown.

That's better. Funny to think that ole Ronnie Reagan enacted some of the toughest gun control laws in the nation at the time after the Black Panthers showed up to the Calfiornia State Capitol openly carrying long guns:
Some people think the 2nd Amendment is only for white people.

I love that poster
I love that poster particularly when some say the Grateful Dead were/are not political. Many other examples of their activism despite the revisionists.
I watched the movie Summer of Soul this morning. Great film. Some flavor of the time (1969) comes through strong, Sister Nina Simone!
Also, the jackets worn by Allman Brothers on the back of the first album? Butch Trucks called them "our Panther jackets".
Some of y'all need to feel self-defense by any means necessary, the Trump Cult is going nowhere.
They have a new holiday, January 6th. Feast of St. Ashli, I suppose.

Point = Self Evident, it was
Point = Self Evident, it was relating to an anniversary of something you obviously have no clue about.
All my threads are meant to open up discussion on pertinent topics. Without any blacks on board I would have enjoyed hearing from some of you who may have been part of the Oakland scene in the mid to late 60's where the Panthers came from. But all I hear is the same ol stale hogwash delivered from some high horses asses. All about a word you can't handle that I didn't originally say, nice job zoners. Slackers
Not positive but I bet ya some of the Panther mottos had something to do with, " go ahead, call me a nigger, whitey ".
Anyone here ever witness or have any stories of local race issues or riots in your city ? I used to live at 15 Griggs St a few blocks from North Square,,, just a few short years after the riots,, things were funky back then, still are.
Instead of lame comments, feel free to engage in some worthwhile discussion, or not.
During the summer of 1969, Waterbury was beset by race riots. Waterbury's African-American citizens led a fight for civil rights against charges of segregation and racism.

I was in third or fourth
I was in third or fourth grade and living in southern Connecticut when Bobby Seale went on trial in New Haven for murder, and I remember one of my classmates saying on the playground during recess one day that the Black Panthers were coming to town with shotguns to kill white people. Was a racial epithet used that day? I can't say for sure, but I'm guessing it's likely. My knowledge of panthers up to that time had been established by the character of Bagheera in the Disney production of The Jungle Book, so hearing a group of black people called Panthers triggered in me a bit of dissonance.
DId I feel threatened by the prospect of black people coming to my neighborhood to kill white people? I honestly don't think it did. This was in 1970, and my ten year old mind was already pretty much conditioned to hearing crazy stuff in the news all the time, like the daily Vietnam death toll on the front page of the New Haven Register (which ironically resembled the box scores on the sports page), the overall craziness of the revolutionary year of 1968, and the Manson murders in 1969, just to name a few.
My point here, if I have one, is best summarized by George Santayana's most famous line: Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat it.
