Saw about 15 minutes at the beginning last night, looks great, as usual, from Mr. Burns.

The Ravens/Chiefs was just too good.  Looking forward to seeing the rest.

I wasn't aware that a syndicate of Louisville businessmen--all white, of course--managed Ali and put him on a salary in his early career as a way to keep him insulated from the mob. That's kind of problematic in terms of power dynamics, but I found it interesting nonetheless.

I saw the Louisville Syndicate as a win win for Clay. As you say it insulated him from the putrid mob influence that dominated boxing right then, and it's probably why Ali never went all in on the 'hate all whites' philosophy of Elijah Muhammad and Malcolm X. Lotta hate coming out of the Nation Of Islam teachings,, but never from Ali himself. Whole Lotta Love came out of Ali,, he was smarter than the Nation Of.

I was shadow-boxing earlier in the day
I figured I was ready for Cassius Clay
I said “Fee, fie, fo, fum, Cassius Clay, here I come
26, 27, 28, 29, I’m gonna make your face look just like mine
Five, four, three, two, one, Cassius Clay you’d better run
99, 100, 101, 102, your ma won’t even recognize you
14, 15, 16, 17, 18, 19, gonna knock him clean right out of his spleen”

Wow grate stuff!

I don't know for sure (the 1 time I met Dylan I was too awestruck to remember to ask him), but I always believed Bob wrote these particular lines in Forever Young for Ali  --

May your hands always be busy
May your feet always be swift
May you have a strong foundation

Another Anniversary ---

Upon further review, I have to say KN won this fight 10-5,, he hit Ali with shots way too often, shots Ali never would have gotten hit with just a couple years earlier. And Muhammad's hands were idle when Norton was wide open and off balance,,, exactly the time Ali would normally be pummeling an opponent.  The 3rd Frazier fight took all Ali had left, and should have been his last,,, this fight emphasizes that fact. Tough to watch. Earnie Shavers almost took Ali's head clean off a year after this fight, but Muhammad got that decision too. Fuck the boxing powers that be for allowing the damage to Muhammad to continue, they should have called those fights correctly. All for the big gate paydays. Angelo Dundee should have put his foot down too.

Just finished this last evening.  I thought it was very good.  I was about 11 when he fought Larry Holmes, so I only vaguely remember that and Leon Spinks.  While I'm sure I saw bits and pieces of his career here and there on TV, it's nothing like it is today with the internet.  So, even though I knew there was much more to the story, I was mostly oblivious to 90% of what led up to Spinks and Holmes.  Have always heard about his fights with Frazier, but never quite understood until seeing this film.  More importantly, I didn't quite grasp his whole persona in the context of civil rights and other issues of the day.

It's not from the documentary, but I thought this fit here.

^ Bob wrote Forever Young for his son, Jesse. It's 100% a parent to child dedication.

https://www.bbc.com/news/magazine-35110416

I'm sure Bob was passionate about Ali and all he represented, but... Usually the obvious explanation for things is more accurate than the cosmic. cheeky

I knew it was written for his son, common knowledge,, but songs or just some verses within can take on numerous meanings to the listener, can they not ?  Even to the songwriter as Bob recorded 2 versions on the album.

Written as a lullaby for his eldest son Jesse, born in 1966, Dylan's song relates a father's hopes that his child will remain strong and happy. It opens with the lines, 'May God bless and keep you always / May your wishes all come true', echoing the priestly blessing from the Book of Numbers, which has lines that begin: 'May the Lord bless you and guard you / May the Lord make His face shed light upon you.' Not wishing to sound 'too sentimental', Dylan included two versions of the song on the album Planet Waves, one a lullaby and the other more rock-oriented.

In notes on "Forever Young" written for the 2007 album Dylan, Bill Flanagan writes that Dylan and the Band 'got together and quickly knocked off an album, Planet Waves, that featured two versions of a blessing from a parent to a child. In the years he was away from stage, Dylan had become a father. He had that in common with a good chunk of the audience. The song reflected it. Memorably recited on American television by Howard Cosell when Muhammad Ali won the heavyweight crown for the third time defeating Leon Spinks in 1978'.

I watched that fight, must of heard Cosell mention that verse,  and from then on I've always associated those words to Muhammad Ali. Yep, that's it.

Italianamerican is a 1974 documentary directed by Martin Scorsese and featuring Scorsese's parents, Catherine and Charles. The Scorseses talk about their experiences as Italian immigrants in New York City among other things, while having dinner at their apartment on Elizabeth Street. Scorsese's mother also instructs how to cook her meatballs, a recipe later featured in the credits of the film. Among the subjects discussed in the film are family, religion, their origins, Italian ancestors, life in Italy after the war and the hardships of poor Sicilian immigrants in America striving to make money.

Billy Crystal @ Ali's Funeral - Great Stuff, not long

"The Bear" on Hulu. S1, 8 episodes, each around 30 minutes long. It's centered around a master chef returning home to Chicago to run his deceased brother's sandwich shop.

E7 is 21 minutes long with a 17 minute continuous shot that leaves you wondering how in the hell did they do that!

The restaurant is the real "The Beef" restaurant (inside also) in Chicago that was leased for the filming.

The acting is superb, and if you've ever worked in a commercial kitchen, the banter, the back-and-forth nipping , the hecticness and cussing is all spot-on.

I don't hulu but it sounds like fun. Best summer of my life I worked as a Hobart Technician (dishwasher - Hobart was the name of the machine you sent the dishes thru once I scraped all the food shit off).  Working with all the folks in and out of that kitchen was a gas. Cooks, busboys, waitresses and all around the same age,, just so much fun. Yeah, lotsa fuck you, fuck them, fuck it, love.

Yes The Bear is just amazing. Best show of 2022

I haven't seen The Bear yet, but I heard an interview on NPR with the lead actor a few weeks ago, and it sounded really interesting.

I can't recommend the movie Stuck On You highly enough. It's a must watch. All the way through till Rocket gets dragged off. Trust me, just get past the silly stuff and you'll absolutely love it. It's a Farrrr A Leeeeeee brothers classic. This here tune I also fucking love is from the movie,, I don't want to give too much away but it's from the scene where Eva Mendes nails Ben Carson ( yeah that Ben Carson). Just rent the movie, you'll enjoy it, I guarantee, and watch all the way through the credits.
