Knotesau, I slept! Traveling the last few days, with spotty service at best on Friday aboard the ferries.
That said, I know I was missing some heat, both Astral Spirits and No Quarter Records sending brief but crucial missives.. and me, just sleepin' on it. Bad music lover! Will have to check out Luke Stewart during the setbreak of this Dead and Co.
We did see Joe McPhee play a set of wild saxophone music yesterday, though!
If they would have gone into Darkstar I was going to lose my shit. Those three songs coupled in 1968 was some of the best stuff ever. But I'll settle for a well played St. Steven/Eleven any day. Very well played tonight IMO. Loving it.
I certainly appreciate the streams by Wolfman. Really enjoyed these last two shows. The only downer for me was Bob doing his spoken word delivery during Wharf Rat. Generally I've been surprised by Bob singing so well. I thought maybe he had left that spoken word delivery to the past, but there it was in full bloom on Wharf Rat. Everything weighed though, this band sounds quite good to my ears right now. Musically they are cooking. Occasionally Bob's vocal become the weak link.
I must admit that Mayer is growing on me. He played the shit out of Shakedown IMO. The setlist looks like a show I would like to see. And I actually saw Weir simile for a second on Shakedown.Street.
Nuthin wrong with slow, it's just another gear of groove to get into. I know, if they were going any slower they'd he goin backwards, but these last 3 shows have been pretty top shelf stuff. The Beam of this band has been shining brightly. Get the groove and let the good times roll my man.
Jim knew -
Comes out of the Virginia swamps
Cool and slow with plenty of precision
With a back beat narrow and hard to master
Some call it heavenly in its brilliance
Others, mean and rueful of the Western dream
I love the friends I have gathered together on this thin raft
We have constructed pyramids in honor of our escaping
This is the land where the Pharaoh died
The Negroes (deadheads) in the forest brightly feathered
They are saying, "forget the night
Live with us in forests of azure
Out here on the perimeter there are no stars
Out here we is stoned, immaculate"
watching set 2. Listened to show the other night and was very impressed. This second time through I'm still impressed. Hadn't listened to Dead & Co til about a week ago, just had no interest. Bob's vocals have improved dramatically. I don't know if they have been this good for the past few years, but they are a tight improvisational band currently. Rearranging, interpreting, but most certainly not rehashing the GD catalog. Color me impressed and on the Dead & Co. bus. Wow!
