Very special. Went through at least 2 on vinly. Saw CPR a few times, David was gracious enough to sign a couple things,,, but not before saying to me, " If I see these on Ebay I will hunt you down". We shared a good laugh.
Really fucking dig that Crosby, warts n all. What a songwriter singer.
Feel like letting my freak flag fly
Yes, I feel like I owe it to
I can't remember how I came across this album but I do remember going into the record store asking for it.
Me: "You ever hear of this album called If I could Only Remember My Name"?
Heady owner: loooong pause. Looks at me slowly. Then blurts out in full force "It's only the best fucking album there ever was! It's got Jerry Garcia, Joni Mitchell, Neil Young....." and on and on into 5 minute rant.
Me: "I'll take it"
And I fell in love with that album. He was right. it's pretty damn good.
Got my copy of this yesterday, and it's real nice to revisit this classic. Stephen Barncard's remix is sounding real good to my ears, and Steve Silberman's liner notes are a good read. I bought this reissue because of the demos and alternate takes, and have to say that I'm torn between the original release of Cowboy Movie, with Garcia's lead guitar, and the alternate version, with Neil Young's lead guitar. I think I'm going to have to listen to both a number of times before I'll even consider which one I like better. Seems like this would be an interesting matrix project too, if someone could get them in sync and mix the two together.
> I've tried to get into this album many times.
Hey, Bss, if you're interested in giving this release a spin, I can send you the CDs if you send me your mailing address; my email's in my profile. I ripped them to FLACs, so the discs are kind of redundant at this point.
About 9 days or so ago, there were tweets from the Lighthouse Band members that they had convened in LA to record a new album. Crosby tweeted yesterday it's complete and off to be mixed. That's pretty fast work. Here's hoping it continues his fantastic late run and is out soon.Fab DuPont is engineering / producing again and has been documenting the process on Facebook all week.
Quoting Journalist/Author of Crosby CD Liner notes Steve Silberman from his FB Page:
Please join me and David Crosby on the new episode of the Osiris podcast series #FreakFlagFlying, "Songs are Holy to Us," to celebrate RHINO's' 50th Anniversary enhanced rerelease of Crosby's all-time masterpiece, "If I Could Only Remember My Name."
In this first of two eps on "If I Could Only Remember My Name," Croz and Phil Lesh speak candidly about the uniquely collaborative atmosphere of the sessions, featuring musician-friends like Jerry Garcia, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell and others. Croz also recalls "fearless" Jerry Garcia, the influence of Joni Mitchell, McCoy Tyner, and others on his music, and the tragedy that inspired what Croz considers his finest piece of music ever, captured by the brilliant engineer of the sessions, Stephen Barncard. Please join us.

I've always loved David
I've always loved David Crosby.
He's lived a fascinating life, he's been a TRUE rock star in all the good & bad ways, and he still has a totally unique voice of an angel.
Live long & prosper David.

I've tried to get into this
I've tried to get into this album many times.
I haven't found a copy in any format that had nice enough fidelity to make me "want" to repeatedly listen to it. (Separation, range)
(never tried/heard the 200gm from a few years back)
To me the playing mostly just seems lazy, static, and an overall insincere effort. Good players playing below their potentials.
A couple moments of "yeah!", no doubt. But if this is Crosby's best it's understandable to me why his past bandmates don't like him much.
