R.I.P. Charlie Watts gone at 80 per his publicist

R.I.P.

That was quick.  Damn.

My favorite Charlie Watts story involved Mick showing up a dude's house at 1:00 am banging on the door and hollering about how he needed "my drummer" down at the studio to record some track.  Charlie got up and neatly dressed, went downstairs, punched Mick in the face, said "no, you are my singer," and promptly went back to bed.

Oh no!!

What a pity

RIP the backbone of the Stones!!

Thanks for it all Charlie, you were the glue, the master of the backbeat.

RIP + wishing you a nice soft landing.

Charlie was the class act of the Stones, and just a fantastic drummer.  Condolences to his wife of 57 years, Shirley, his children, the extended Watts family, his friends, his bandmates, the Rolling Stones crew, and the legion of Rolling Stones fans worldwide.  We lost a great one today.  Can't imagine the Stones pushing on without him.

Shattered.

R.I.P. Charlie Watts

Man

wow

R.I.P. Charlie, respect.

hard to believe this is the end of the road

Sad news. I'm very sorry for his wife.

I imagine the Stones will Roll on.

RIP Charlie. Glad I got to see many great shows.

RIP Charlie

A great drummer with an even greater smile.

RIP Charlie Watts

My first drummer crush in middle school, and the Stones were one of my first big "dome" concerts.

End of an era?

RIP Charlie.

R I P Charlie:  Drums and drum snares in heaven today

Rest in Peace

Rolling Stones first ever concert in India 2003. Planned on going as was staying 9 hours away by bus but they moved the shows up a week like a 2 weeks before because of SARS so we never made it. Refrets

And the tickets were $10 for cheap seats and $50 for the best seats.

Didn't they announce not long ago, that he would not be on this upcoming tour with them?

Wonder who is on track to "replace" him.

RIP.

Yes, they had replaced him on the upcoming tour, appears maybe he was not well, and this may not of been sudden. Amazing drummer, amazing band in all formations.RIP Charlie Watts

1994 had enough $  for a ticket to either stones or pink floyd (both in madison,wi within a couple weeks of eatchother)

I went to see rolling stones, just to watch/see/hear   charlie watts play drums live !

RIP !

Steve Jordan is the guy for the upcoming shows, and if Keith decides to continue on without Charlie after that I would imagine Jordan would keep the gig.

He's great, but he isn't Charlie Watts.

Expensive winos drummer Steve Jordan was the replacement on this tour

I was wrong about India ticket prices. The most expensive was $30 US not $50. It was 50 rupees to the dollar at the time.I thought it was 2500 rupees for the expensive ticket. It was only 1500. Cheapest rolling stone concert since probably the 90's.?

The Stones will never be the same. Watts was one of the best ever.

The Stones will never be the same the Stones again.

They can still be an excellent rock band with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards & Ron Wood, but despite what they may call themselves, they'll never be The Rolling Stones again.

And I'm willing to bet that at least in private if not in public, Keith Richards agrees with me.

And because of that, despite how much fun a Stones show is, how great all those songs are and how great Steve Jordan is, I really hope that after these make-up shows they call it a career and shut down The Rolling Stones forever.

That's how important I believe Charlie Watts was to that band.

Brian Williams did a great monologue about Charlie on MSNBC's 11th hour.... but can't find the video link.

Bill Kreutzmann's very nice response to Charlie Watts passing...

"Drummers are bonded together by virtue of their instrument and I am saddened that today we lost a brother. The last time I saw the Rolling Stones was in the arena in Oakland where the Grateful Dead had performed many times before. But being in the audience, I got to experience that show as a fan. I even paid for parking! When the Stones brought out Tom Waits to sit in on “Little Red Rooster,” one of my friends reminded me that the Grateful Dead had played that very song in that very room.

Charlie had his own feel for it and I loved it. I always admired his steadfast approach, ability, and style. Rest in peace, brother."

I was at that Oakland show, and it was a damn good one, and then I was at the next one a few nights later in San Jose, where John Forgerty and then Bonnie Raitt sat in with the band.

The show in San Jose was especially good (Bonnie Raitt, oh my) and I clearly remember thinking during that rockin' show that this could well be the last time I see this most legendary band, and if so this is a good one to go out on.

I didn't see the show they played at Levi's Stadium in 2019, so that San Jose show will be the final true Rolling Stones show I'll ever see, and it WAS a really good one to go out on.

Fare Thee Well Rolling Stones.

Long Live Rock 'n Roll!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

>>>>They can still be an excellent rock band with Mick Jagger, Keith Richards & Ron Wood, but despite what they may call themselves, they'll never be The Rolling Stones again.

A lot of bands are like that.  I used to say the same thing about the Who after the Ox died a rock star's death in a Las Vegas hotel room, but then saw the Daltrey/Townsend Band and they lived up to the Who name.  In the end, it's those dudes' band and as long as they got Mick and Keith, they call themselves the Stones just like Axl and Slash can probably get away calling themselves GnR for as long as they can keep going too.

That being said, the Led Zeppelin made the right decision to hang up the moniker after John Bonham met his untimely demise..

They were hobbled when Bill Wyman left, and some thought it wasn't really 'The Rolling Stones' anymore. Now, like the Who, their rhythm section is completely overhauled. How about a supergroup with Paul & Ringo - The Rolling Tweatles.

Deep Purple still has their classic rhythm section, as does AC/DC, Fleetwood Mac, Aerosmith, U2, and...uh...

Thanks for posting the Billy statement Lance, I was hoping he or Mickey would chime in on Charlie's passing.

That Oakland Arena show was the last time I saw the band. I thought they were really good that night; having great seats always helps.

I'm sorry l'll never see them in that configuration again; seeing that band at the Wiltern Theatre in LA was a true highlight of the hundreds of shows I've seen,

but I never walked out of a Stones show saying "that sucked". (Probably because I didn't see them enough! I know there were weak shows but I never felt one).

Good luck to all of them, no matter what they decide to do.

Jagger and Richards give up the Stones name, never going to happen

I knew I should have made the effort to see the Stone's at least once.  Had plenty of opportunities and now I'm kicking myself.

I skipped a Johnny cash concert about twenty years ago, jr. It was on a weeknight, and I had a hangover, and told myself I'd just catch him next time.

I'm actually still kicking myself today, if that helps any.

I suspect they do this tour and whatever is scheduled for the 60th anniversary next year in England before hanging it up. I suspect the ly play the BST in Hyde Park next July and I'll be there.

"As much as Mick's voice and Keith's guitar, Charlie Watts' snare sound is the Rolling Stones. He's a great example of the kind of power a great drummer can bring to his band, deepening not only the physical force of the music, but also the depth of emotion and heart the songwriter gets out of his characters. When Mick sings, 'It's only rock 'n' roll but I like it,' Charlie's in back showing you why! " —Bruce Springsteen, May 1991

Charlie Watts: 9 not-so-crazy stories about the mild man of rock

https://www.yahoo.com/lifestyle/charlie-watts-9-not-crazy-165456155.html

Watts was faithful to his wife Shirley, and consistently refused sexual favours from groupies on the road. In Robert Greenfield’s STP: A Journey Through America with The Rolling Stones, a documentary of their 1972 American Tour, it is noted that when the group was invited to the Playboy Mansion, Watts took advantage of Hugh Hefner’s game room instead of frolicking with the women.

“I’ve never filled the stereotype of the rock star," he remarked. "Back in the Seventies, Bill Wyman and I decided to grow beards, and the effort left us exhausted.”

another good read from the Chili Peppers drummer, also touches on Charlie's collection of famous drummers kits, not to play but to preserve.

I knew he was stylish, but I guess I never knew how cool Charlie was, talk about living your own life. Probably the least likely type of person to be the drummer of The Rolling Stones.

Seeing them at the Wiltern Theatre in LA was a real treat.

Soloman Burke came out.

Rock and Roll at its best.

Nice, Phil.

Raz, that album cover is such a great acknowledgment of Bob. Too classic.

Mr. Steady Beat

Wow Local you saw them at the Wiltern. Very cool. Saw a few shows there in the 80's when I lived there. JGB and a acoustic Hot Tuna show. Great place in I think Korea town.

Also a really good Other One jam with Trombone Shorty. https://youtu.be/EWMoU7OLRxs

We sat on a bench outside the venue - still not cool with a big crowd.
