Record Heat

Seattle has never recorded 100 degrees or higher in June.  Looks like we're going to get there on Sunday and Monday with forecast highs those days of 102 and 106.  Stay hydrated, don't overdo it, and find a cool, shaded space.
 

I assembled a new fan for my third floor no air conditioning apartment yesterday.  On days this hot, I usually wait until after midnight to even bother with climbing the stairs and trying to get some sleep.  If it's real bad, I just crash on the floor down in my shop in the basement, where it will be 10-20 degrees cooler than upstairs.

It's hit at least 100 here in southern Oregon the last 5 out of 6 days. And not much refuge/getting even hotter for the next week to 10 days it seems. This is pretty much what it's like living in Las Vegas in August. go out to water first thing and it's already pushing 80. Hope the A/C holds up.

Its going to be a tough ride for a lot of us without air conditioning.  Last night wasn't fun.

The predicted 110˚ for Eugene on Sunday will be too hot. No air conditioning here and the breezes will be calm.

I spent summers in Brawley where it was routinely 110˚, and sometimes 115˚. There was a pool and air conditioning even at the old motels we lived in.

Seattle's air-conditioned libraries are open among various other neighborhood cooling centers.  Shopping malls are also an option for an air-conditioned space.  
 

A few years ago we had some 100+ days in August.  I stayed cool in the basement with fans running during the day, and would go to a movie theater or a pub with some food,  music on the speakers and sports on the tv to enjoy some a/c until it was hopefully cool enough to crash.

 I remember being stuck in Bakersfield, California for a couple of 108+ days while I was getting a new engine to replace the one I'd blown driving through the Grapevine.  I grabbed a burrito to stash and went to the multi-plex, where I cooled off  and watched 4 movies before the sun set and I walked back to my motel.

Cooling places have been set up in Eugene for people who need them, including the Library, other community centers and other places. We have warming centers in the winter, it seems like we may need cooling centers more often.

My home cooling place is making coffee ice cubes to use in iced coffee. No dilution as the ice melts.

I just Google the weather channel,, 112. On Sunday. 38 to 60 percent humidity. Geez

We are getting close to a drought declaration, but for short times until then, another thing I like to do is sit under a "market" umbrella and run an oscillating sprinkler up over it so the water falling from it creates a cocoon of coolth. Being encased in falling cold water is very comfortable. I like to walk through the sprinkler, too, but the cocoon of coolth feels really good.

That is a brilliant "coccon" idea, Judit! Sorta like swamp coolers that are used in dryer climates.

Love your ideas Judit!  I just realized I can make coffee ice cubes too w/ the 1/2 of french press pot that I didn't drink this morn. 

My go-to when it's tough to sleep in the heat: I stash flat bedsheets in ziplock bags in the freezer, then use as needed.

I'll be watching for heat and fire reports this weekend. Worried about my beloved Oregon.

Yea, that's crazy that a solid and cool 60 still seems to be holding for Newport et al. Cape Blanco is a favorite of mine. First time I was there (circa 2004?) it was oddly warm day and night but not in any visit since.

Not obsessively checking the temps, but the rate my lettuce has started to bolt and bitter today is shocking. I harvested a lot that was still in good shape and flavor (pre-bolt) and saw that the frilly kinds were doing better than the broader leaf types. It's still in the 90˚s.

Maybe just a degree or two hotter, but the humidity runs in the single digits.

Never seen this kind of high pressure feature before...  likely a thousand year event (a few paleoclimatologists I know are saying a 15,000 yr event).

It's a record breaking feature within a more common August feature, but way out of place for this time of year...   

Technically, we're in an "Omega Block", which is common during summers around here (meaning August), typically a cut off low a thousand miles off the pacific coast, high pressure in Cali and Baja, monsoonal low pressure in the rockies...  only this time there's a super cell (for lack of a term) high pressure center, with a bullseye on the Pacific NW.   Tomorrow we'll likely shatter all time record highs by 5 - 10 degrees!  That's unheard of!!!  And our (all time) record highs are usually in July / Aug...  

When I got in the truck for my only allowed errand of the day, Sirius Radio was still on, the first words thru the speakers "fever rolls up, to a 105",  it was 103 outside, LOL.

Noodler, your mention of this being more typical of August reminded me that when I was putting cloth up on windows and skylights to prep for heat, I realized that the sun is much farther north now than in August when I'm usually putting cloth up. I chose different windows and it was interesting thinking that we're not used to this kind of heat in June. Rain yes, heat no.

Growing up in Oregon, summer never began until July 4th and I never got out my summer clothes until then, either. 
Rain /clouds were more common in June....

I moved here in 1974 and for the next decade it rained and was kind of cool all summer (no tomatoes ripened, ever). That pattern lasted for maybe 10 years, then it dried and warmed up towards the end of summer, and then, the pattern changed to be like what you're saying, LLOLLO, it rained til exactly July 5th when the sun shined and it got hot for the rest of summer. July 4th was cool and drizzly, July 5th was summer. What the hell will things change to now?

Portland (~108?)  20 degrees hotter than DFW (~88) right now?

Guy I work with is spending summer in Portland to avoid Texas heat.

Things are getting strange*.

Yep, sea breezes and marine air until the 5th of July, pretty much the norm for my 41years up here.  

The record heat waves occur at the end of July thru mid August.  Usually under a very large high pressure system.  

This is due to a circulation pattern within a very tight / localized high pressure center, with record warm temps at 800mb, if those broke to the surface we could reach 120 degrees, in fact, when the winds in Portland switched to easterly early this afternoon, the temps at the Portland airport jumped from 99 - 108 degrees in about 30 minutes (12:45 - 1:15).  Astoria / Long Beach jumped to 100 - 105 degrees!

Hope all you people affected by this heat get relief pronto. It must really be hard on the homeless street people. I just went to the supermarket and was suffering walking on the hot pavement and it's only 90 today. 93 on Tuesday. But we get the high humidity here on the East coast.

Just got back from the beach - windy from the NW and about 75 deg. It's 109 here now.

When we moved up here in 1984 - elev. 750 ft. - we got several feet of snow every winter. From time to time we were snowed in for days. We had many days of the hill icing up, and sometimes days at a time of sideways rain. We had newts and lots of mushrooms, and the fir trees were happy.

It hardly snows at all now, and when it does it's gone in a day. No icy road conditions this year, and not nearly enough rain. The newts have been replaced by lizards, mushrooms are rare, and the fir trees are dying.

I've been reviewing essays all day, and just stepped outside to have a smoke, and as soon as I opened the door, I smelled and saw wildfire smoke. Luckily (for me), it's at the base of the Grapevine about 15 miles north of here. The temp is 100 and it's kind of windy too.

Is it really still June?

Here's a few all time records, and the roads to the coast melting 

Weather is strange right now. A little cooler - mid 90s - and expecting more cooling as the ocean breeze picks up and the dry east wind dies down. At the moment the two winds are apparently fighting it out in my front yard. We get a few seconds or minutes of the east wind, followed by another few seconds or minutes of west wind. All the trees and grasses are bending one way and then whipping back the other way.

How do you use a BBQ to measure the temperature?

Most of the better ones have thermometers built in.

Ambient thermometers?

Their outdoor thermometers didn't go high enough, had to use the thermometer on the BBQ's instead, lol

Unique physics going on here, a true major high pressure storm! 

When doing local snow forecasting, it's common to get a convergence zone that gets dumped on, for example;  Eugene will have a southerly wind of 20 mph with a cold rain just above freezing, Portland will have east winds of 40mph blasting frigid arctic air in from the Colombia basin.  The winds will turn northerly as they work their way south down the Willamette Valley.  But Salem (or Corvallis, or wherever the line sets up) will be calm...  a weird kind of calm, as you've got 40mph going against 20mph winds, and they can't go into the ground, so they go vertical, which causes a mechanically forced dumping of snow.  That's often how record snow falls happen in our area.  Conflicting winds converge in one area and create a super event

Today, it was dry winds from a localized high pressure system within a much larger high pressure feature doing the weather.  Corvallis / Eugene had a strong westernly sea breeze start this afternoon (30mph gusts), while north of Salem it was easterly winds.  Salem was calm, and when the sea breeze kicked in, Salem went from 109 to 116 in less than an hour.  Mechanically forced heating (instead of snow).

Normally record highs involve the advection of heat from the desert SW, along with the mechanical forcing of a large high pressure system... usually in mid / late summer.  This was a high pressure super storm, until now, I didn't know they existed (seems to be a common thought in the weather community).

  I hope they study the fuck out of it, because this is exactly what (a part) of climate change will look like...

I'm guessing you folks up north aren't finding much comfort in the fact that you're being cooked low and slow.

When it's 97 at midnight, outdoors, and in your bathroom, the battle is lost, lol....   (at least there's a 50 degree ocean 40 miles by crow, or 50 by car)

When the sea breeze first started making an impact, now it's impact has spread to most of the south valley, and parts of the west side

And to really punch home the point of us up here in the great Pacific NW, at the 45th parallel, equivalent to Maine (Toronto Canada is south of us), baking hotter than Tejas, well, yikes!!!  

Salem was 117 today, tying Vega's all time high!!!
