Was this supposed to create some whitewashed myth of the virtuous European settler opposed to the cruel and savage Native American? It didn't work. I always revered Sitting Bull, Crazy Horse and the other chiefs and warriors in that battle, and always considered Custer to be an egotistical, impulsive idiot who was poorly suited for command.
I just don't get why anyone would want to live in Custer. It would be like living in Loserville.
I believe the reasoning falls somewhere along those lines, yes. To basically paint Custer (as a metaphor for the USA) even in defeat, as having fought valiantly against the merciless savages, despite having been slaughtered (along with his two brothers).
Though I have never seen or held it myself, friends from the rosebud reservation have shown me photos of captured battle flag of the 7th, and said sometimes it is broken out and danced upon in ceremony.
