JGB / Legion of Melvin this weekend -- anyone going?

Anyone going to these shows this weekend?

JGB on Saturday / Legion on Sunday

Problem is, the tickets are by the 4-person carload.... if anyone needs a seat filler to bring down the cost, I'll be driving down from Shasta that morning.

Looks like a cheap and potentially fun gig!

Clarification > I can only go to the Sunday show.

The state of live music in 2021 (so far)

This could be very good music, especially with Dave Ellis on sax stretching out the LOM material. I got excited temporarily But...

No spot taken. $160 per person with fees (the going rate?) is too much money for 2-3 hours of entertainment, for my personal sensibilities and bankroll. That's the bottom line.

It's a good thing that bands are gigging, business is happening and people are enjoying. I understand why the prices have to be what they are, and begrudge nobody an opportunity to make up for lost time and $$$. No sour grapes.

I want to go to shows, but am in no hurry, so there is no reason to be squeezed by market conditions for something not necessary. Pandemic has helped me be more patient, disciplined, and frugal than ever before.  I'll just simply wait to see live shows until bands can play full rooms, schedule more gigs at more venues, that compete with each other, so then there will be more supply, less demand and lower prices, at least for some shows and on the secondary markets.

observation: Phish at $95 + fees seems like a bargain compared to these neo-post-pandemic events.

$140 plus fees is for a 4-person car.

If it is $160 per car for 2-4 people, I stand corrected on the price and the value. Thanks. But $40/person seems too cheap, which is why I assumed otherwise! Not a complaint. I don't understand why they would go that low, from a business perspective.  They could easily charge $60 per person, and that would seem very fair, relative to what else is going on. Maybe they hope to squeeze a lot of cars in?  or perhaps they expect a bunch of 2 person carloads, and overall it works out to about $60/person. Just thinking out loud here, trying to understand neo-post-pandemic event economics.

I'm going to the Legion of Melvin show as it's a great line-up. I'm not so sure about the concept of a drive-in concert but thought I'd give it a whirl.....

Chut up!

unnamed (1)_11.jpg

The Meester lives! Pass him this joint, please. The whole joint. Everybody gets their own. Martin gets 2. Love that guy, and the way he lit up the room!

It's the neo-post-pandemic era. No more sharing joints and pipes with a group of freaks, at least for me. That's gross. Can't believe I did that for years. I used to always say yes if any stranger who didn't seem like a dick asked me if they could have a hit. Even if they looked like their health or hygiene was questionable, I had a hard time saying no. That's all changed, for the better. If someone friendly wants to get high, I'll gladly give them what they need. I'd buy them a drink too, their own drink, not a few sips from mine. Cheers!

Sounds like a fun time. I wish I were out there. (We have out first live outdoor music this weekend in a year an a half -- DelFest Lite in Leesberg VA, but bummer, they are calling for rain.)

>>>>DelFest Lite in Leesberg VA

It will be streamed

yes

^ yes I got that email too, which is good, because driving thru DC traffic on Memorial Day weekend in the rain is not my cup of tea.

However, we are jonsin for some live music -- and wife really wants to go....so we're going at least one day.

It's at a 66 acre brewery. Socially distanced. Thankfully, I heard they let you go back to the car during the show, which alleviates a lot of problems -- no gluten free beer or food  at the venue so I can pack a picnic basket and it provides a dry place to wait out the storm. Very civilized in-and-out policy.

So you're restricted to your car space?

The Mare Island venue looks cool for future events...

Is Mr.Hat promoter Larry The Hat ? who promoted shows in the Palm Ballroom (todays TXR Grateroom)

no different guy

not larry the hat from mill valley - who did a few shows at different places

and returned a super cool GD jacket to me that I had left at the palm back in the day - good karma

>>>I'm not so sure about the concept of a drive-in concert<<<

I heard that the scene at the other shows they've done at this place was good, with the ability to hang out next to your car it's like a tailgate party without having to leave and cram into the venue.

If it was closer I'd consider going to this.

It's funny though, I'm not feeling that desperate to get back to shows. I wonder if I'm getting old?

I've been enjoying going to Giants games, but part of that is how great it is to be there with only 6,000 - 10,000 people in the 42,000 venue.

I must be getting old.

But you other people...

GTTS!!!

Getting?

True story: I was passing by the venue on my way home from Portland... about 30 min into the show...

... Thought I'd check out the venue and the scene at the fairgrounds since the previous 2 rest areas on the 505 were closed.

Waiting for my left turn into the fairgrounds, the traffic cop there is tending to a wreck w/ concert kids, glass everywhere. I follow an official looking car around that mess and made it to the back lot entrance--- poor signage.

I'm now listening to the opener bands on the closed circuit FM in an adjacent lot... the security guard told me I needed to wait an hour before she would let me in for free... and I didn't even ask... evidently they raised gate tickets to $160...

Guess I should go in and check it out, huh?

anyone else here?

My car has my work laptop in it and is packed to the gills w/ stuff from Portland, so didn't want to leave it to go in on a 4-person car.

105 driving through Red Bluff today but had a cosmic overnight stay on Shasta!

Sounds like they are announcing next band...

JGB was fantastic

super chill venue

and basically no restrictions

smiles for miles ( I did not pull my non existent hat over my face, but my face was stolen, and I could dance like a crazed geriatric 7 year old!!!)

big fun

AND A FN FANTASTIC SHOW - omg

Setbreak

This feels like an old-school music experience...and thank heavens I'm vaccinated!

They began the set w/ Reggae Woman after a jam I didn't recognize... ended the set w/ Midnight hour...  good stuff, nice to see The Kid after too long.

liquid light show is cool too

Going to pay Mr Hat Presents, the promoter, so that he can hire better security. ;-)

^^^^

Sweet.   Miracles still happen.

How was the rest of the show?

We went to the Legion of Melvin show last night and it was stupendous! JK, Melvin and Dave Ellis all played at the top of their respective games,

We gathered with all of our friends, brought food and beverages and had good old fashioned fun dancing and grooving to great music.

Skip eye did a great job

The sound was superb perfectly balanced and perfectly loud

From Saturday night perspective

Agree, agree!
Thanks for posting the set list.

The artists were having fun and playing well.
It's a lineup worth seeing... if there are any Zoners near Tennessee, I know they are playing that Caverns venue later this summer.

It was easy to go up front... the show rules were not in play like the website made it seem...

Been a while since I posted......

The upper half of this list is Legion of Melvin from Sunday Night (Mem Day 21.)
Lower half is JGB from Saturday.

I still have some of LOM to upload that I cap'd on my phone.... I'll get at it b4 this holiday ends.

~Enjoy

Atta' boy Ted. You're always bringin' the music to the people.

Interesting that there are no faux Jerryettes, at least for the faux JGB show. The do make a difference.

Still, this sounds good, and I bet it was three hoots to be there.

Melvin's bands continue to make great sounds, as he/they have for many years now.

Keep on keepin' on big Melvin!!!

Many hoots

Thanks for the links painted

I need the rest of them also the second set

And being cognitively impaired I'm thinking that was you standing 5 feet in front of me tell me I'm wrong

thanks for the music links, Treble.... do you intend to upload them to the live music archive? hope so!

Ive been using the Relisten.net app to access LMA, like how that app is designed...

^^^oops, just noticed they are videos... never mind about that LMA request!

RIP JOHN KAHN indeed

Brings back a random memory that I had visited his next-door neighbor the day after he had passed

This kind fellow was awoken by John's wife/  woman? The night before to check on John as he was non responsive

and we happened to visit that home / family friend that one time only

still surreal

RIP with the angels/ spirits.   Every moment is precious.  Do something kind today

Thanks again for n Ted!

BTW Melvin's organ sang the jerryetts parts

Blew my mind.  That man is a monster

and JK grows on me more and more.  Further was impossible imho

RIP J.K.  You earned it!!!

Once again - I do this for fun - I desire only to share this awesome music.
I do not monetize my youtube posts and I do what I do out of LOVE for Jerry, the community and the music!

Thanks so much for adding Wicked Messenger!
have always loved the melody line on that one.

Slight Thread Tangent:

I dig Wicked Messenger - but my favorite arrangement (by far) is by DNB!
They own this one!

That Expressway to your Heart was fuckin' groovy man!! Worth the price of admission alone.

Thanks, Ted. I saw you on the Quarantine Concert chats but even better to see you here.

Thanks for the post.
