... I was a college sophomore getting ready to head out to my 1st GD show.
A kid in the dorms from Long Island, who we all had come to like and told us he had seen them 19 times got the tickets for about 7 of us. Of course, I'm thinkin' Larry is only 18 years old- wtf is goin' on here with seeing any band 19 times? I had seen most major rock acts by then, had heard "Truckin'" on the radio, but didn't know much about them. That all changed dramatically the night after this "smoker"- Jerry as smooth as he got:

I remember walking out blown away and asking Larry where the NEXT show was, and that I had definitely been "shown the light"! It was going to be Watkins Glen for me, but I still have vivid memories of this amazing night.

The last time I spoke to
The last time I spoke to Larry he had moved to SF. I was considering heading out there about '77, and he warned me the "Summer of Love" thing was definitely over, and it was a tough town to make it in with my raging AAS degree. So I skipped it 'cuz of a girlfriend at the time...
I have spoken to two of the seven of us this morning, though- all in our late 60's now. Don't make me say where DOES the time go?

PS That was a Saturday night-
PS ^ That was a Saturday night- friggin' Larry had also gotten us Hot Tuna ticks for SUNY Binghamton the night before, with Papa John- in a gym. The guy was way ahead of me in West Coast musical taste at the time.
BTW- NRPS opened this show, and the GD had some train and smoke machine blowing in the background for the Casey Jones encore. The place was en fuego with energy I had never felt at a concert before, and I had seen all the big arena rock bands of the day, including The Stones. The soundboards are great, but they mostly can't portray what the room was like. As I've said here before, instant Deadhead for me.
PSS Yeah, it is cool, Slick- college buds that I continued to see shows with for years.
