New Trahsh Computer Score -- ReUse, Recycle, ReFurb...

Forums:

This new used little Gem is a Late 2006 vintage iMac,  rectangular,  2.16 GHz Intel Core Duo processor.

The full 3 Gb of RAM and 250 Gb hard drive.

I was at the Scrap Yard poking through the Dead laptops,  seeking a DVD / CD drive for the other trashtop PC.

Although I could not find the appropriate DVD drive for my trashtop,  I spied this iMac in the barrel of Krap,  and plugged it in to the electric outlet.

It made the Dead Mac sound,  and then tried to Boot up. So I figured it was potentially a Rehab item.

the Nice folks at my local Scrap Yard didn't charge me very much for the Derelict iMac.

A bit later it's running like a MoFo and all dusted - off.

The Mac OSX is Lion 10.7.5 and,  I updated the Safari browser to whatever modern version that's compatible.

Not quite as elegant compared to Linux Mint OS,  but hey -- decent enough Barn PC.

While I realize it's a drive for you, DS, my basement might be the go to place for finding old hardware and not so old desktops. I've put together at least 4 full desktops from spare parts this year and gave them new homes with very grateful recipients. Considering that my job demands some serious hardware, my old stuff often outperforms new budget desktops as well as having a min of 16gb of RAM. I have 2 more to build after I assemble a NAS unit for backups and then I go to the laptops. What sort of optical drive do you need? I might have 1 or 5 of them.

Thanks Skif.

I sent you email at your profile address.

The Dell laptop DVD drive has a side port for SATA and is a somewhat - rare form factor.  It's just slightly more modern than what's in trash-piles.

Think that I've got a foto of it on the fone;  my pal Dave in Oregon used to mess around with Dell Trashtops but did not have one in the stack. (he had others with Middle port).

Hopefully we will run into each other at upcoming Live Music Events (LME's).

Mike, I don't have install discs for Lion OSX so I will refrain from attempting a multi-partition scheme.

Maybe I could figure it out,  but I hate to ruin a perfectly decent Barn PC with a fucked-up software install attempt.

It's working Fine now,  so why screw it up ?

Gotcha. I just remembered you posting about using Linux before.

Mike, you are correct. I'm running a Linux Mint version on the Dell trashtop with over a year of decent operation.

I've been OK installing multi-boot setups on various PC's in the past,  so it's actually possible to make that happen.

And, it's fun / amusing / cheap Entertainment taking a Trahsh PC and rehabilitating it. Keeps me out of trouble. However,  i got the Vintage iMac running well,  so I hate to W.A.S.T.E. it going too experimental. For the moment it's running Fine,  and plays optical media.

If I brick it,  sure,  "cheap learning experience" but Hey,  this item was $1499 back in 2006. That's liek, 5 Grand in 2021 dollars.
Also It plays Simpsons DVD's in Stereo.

Those hardware specs for 2006 were pretty decent. I have a 4 core Intel i5 processor (2.20Ghz) on a System 76 Meercat (running Kubuntu) that I picked up 4-5 years ago. 3 GB of RAM back in 2006 was not too shabby too.
