I miss Furthur

Forums:

IMO, they were much better than many gave them credit for being. In any given show they provided a few surprises and sublime moments. I would have liked to see them release some new music.

Right on, sir. I would go see Furthur again. I enjoyed every Furthur show I saw. I liked them a  ton more than Dead & Co. (Of course I have no use for Dead & Co., but that's beside the point.)

I was a fan. Only saw a dozen shows, this was my favorite...

I really liked the Death Don't Have No Mercy from the Tabernacle in 2010. We were in the balcony right above the band. It was an interesting view of the show.

Me too (not "the movement").

I finally got to Red Rocks in 2012 for 3 Furthur shows with some of my best touring pal's, and loved every second of them. We had such a blast we came back for 3 (of 4) in 2013. I consider those trips as kind of putting a bow on 40 years of touring, 'cuz with Phil in the band, he had the ability to just drag/lead everybody along with him, if necessary. Joey Russo friggin' rocks, and the backup vocal's were sorely needed. Of course, the sound quality at RR was/is amazing...

Who else has anyone seen make an attempt to play Blues For Allah? That was an interesting evening.

I'm a Furthur Fluffer.

Furthur wasn't a complete train wreck. The Rosemary show at the Tower (2010?) was the best I ever heard JK play.

I really liked how Chimenti and Russo would hijack Furthur on a nightly basis and take the band to new destinations.  I would definitely be down with seeing them play again.

The Rosemary show at the Tower>>

After seeing them in July for the first time 7/11/10 Mann Center, I was going to see at least one of these, but the ticket price had almost doubled to around $70.00

One of my favorite post '95 shows was 7/11/10, these official boards are much appreciated

The Mann shows were good but I remember the temp and humidity just kinda being more powerful than those shows. Was fucking brutal

11/11/11 was pretty swell

> Who else has anyone seen make an attempt to play Blues For Allah?

The Q played Blues for Allah a few times in 2001. I saw them do it at the LA Greek in June and then at Red Rocks in July.

Red Rocks https://archive.org/details/2001-07-06.paf.nak701fob.unknown.29947.flac1...

Saw maybe 40 Furthur shows when it was all said and done. When Bobby was present, they were a damn fine band.

A few that stand out.

- The opening run at the Fox

- 2009 New Years at the Bill Graham. Bringing it.

- The Radio City Owsley show mentioned above

- First night Shoreline with that absolutely slick second set.

- Coney Island - not the greatest of shows (they were good) but the fun factor dial turned to 11

The final Furthur show I saw was the Bobby weeble wobble show at the Cap. In some ways, it was the most fitting of endings.

Full Terrapin Suite in the pouring rain at the Cuthbert is a Top 20 show going highlight for me.

I miss Jerry

I guess I missed the shows Jerry did with Furthur.

i went to get a slice of pizza during a viola...

Did it have any extra cheesey?

Any extra cheese indeedy?

On the rail for the El Paso flub

I enjoyed the option for the first couple of years. After that, for me, they kind of lost whatever semblance of mojo they'd had.

I liked Furthur. Aside from Weir wobbling in 2010, not a show that year I didn't like from 2009-2010. 2011, specially spring, really strong. I got bored after that with some exceptions. From 2012 until the end, it often felt mailed in from all members.

I was excited to see Furthur play All Good Festival in 2013, but dang it was a total yawn fest.

My last Furthur show was Red Rocks with Branford second set. I don't think I've seen a better incarnation since.

Stroudsburg was a hoot. No AC. Sweaty good time

Yeah, I'd also be up for seeing Furthur again!    As Orange's favorite show illustrates, they weren't afraid to bring back some old school songs ... often times stacking them heavily within a set or show.   There was an LA Greek show of a similar nature is one of my favorites.

If anything, it'd be a good chance to see Phil & Bobby play together in a large ensemble that doesn't require much in the way of contortions with either feelings or learning curve (although I suspect the temp issue would need to be addressed for re-arrangments).

The Herkimer Castle first set was a nice time machine to the late 1960's - and the location of the show was stellar. The parking sitch was a disaster - but once you got in - you were rewarded with this super first set:

The Golden Road (To Unlimited Devotion)

Born Cross-Eyed

Alligator

Truckin'

Feelin' Alright?

New Potato Caboose

Cream Puff War

Viola Lee Blues

> There was an LA Greek show of a similar nature is one of my favorites.

The show on 10/06/2011 at the LA Greek was pretty sweet. I thought it was a good show overall, and the encore--Attics of My Life--was pretty amazing.

https://archive.org/details/furthur2011-10-06.sbd.official.116390.flac16/

Furthur was my favorite post jerry lineup I think it ran its course.. Bobby was no longer happy in what became Phil’s band... that’s my opinion. Dead and Co is just as good musically IMO the difference is the stadium approach and marketing. If Dead and Co stayed low key and played the sheds etc. I would like it better

Dead and Co is just as good musically IMO the difference is...Russo! I'd consider seeing DeadCo if Russo was the drummer.

I'm not a fan of D&C, and I love Joe Russo, but the idea of trading him for Billy and Mickey seems like heresy.

I would prefer a 7 Walkers reunion to a Furthur one

For me - the thing with D&Co. is - well, besides the stadium shows (which I am long done with) - if there is no Phil - then I'm not feeling it. That's just me. If you like them - I'm all for it! Have fun.

trading him for Billy and Mickey seems like heresy<<<

^I'm fine with being a heretic.

Russo> Billy and Mickey... IMO

I have a difficult time remembering specific shows (with the exception of the one in 2010 I linked to below), but do generally recall all of the LA Greek runs as being fun in general ... I was actually thinking about the stacked parking the other day in a fond way - strangely enough.

I've enjoyed all the incantations relatively equally, TOO, TD, Further, D&C. For me, they were what they were, and they fit the time and space.

>>I would prefer a 7 Walkers reunion to a Furthur one

I saw them a handful of times. I enjoyed that band. garage, swampy, bluesy.  One of the last times I saw them George Porter was not there and the had the sousaphone from the dirty dozen brass band. Kirk Joseph I believe is his name.

I would go see them again. A few times.

Stroudsburg was a hoot. No AC. Sweaty good time >>

The Sherman Theatre in Stroudsburg had AC. The temps outside were over 100 at show time and it overwhelmed the AC for the tiny theatre with 500 Heads inside. In between sets, my friend Mike went back to his hotel room, showered, changed clothes and was fresh as a daisy for the second set sauna. That was an excellent night.

> I would have liked to see them release some new music

The only one in that band that had any new ideas was JK.  He was relegated to blushingly play Jerry parts and not step on Phil or Bobby's comfort zone.  And I'm no JK fluffer.

How does it even pop into your head that they were capable of writing a palatable piece of music?

This guy compiled the Abbey Road tunes.  Makes for a fun listen in the car....

>>>>>Full Terrapin Suite in the pouring rain at the Cuthbert is a Top 20 show going highlight for me.

This.

I saw all the PNW Furthur shows until that (last?) one at Cuthbert, where it seemed like someone had died. Guess it was the band.

How does it even pop into your head that they were capable of writing a palatable piece of music?

Let's see...Weir has written some palatable pieces of music recently. Lesh is more than capable of doing the same. JK and JC have both written palatable pieces of music in the past. In reality, even Russo has penned a few winners. Put any 5 talented musicians together and I would say it is more than possible some decent new songs will emerge. That's why it popped into my head.

Saw around one hundred Furthur shows. Whole cap run as well

This is just my opinion no inside knowledge.

They screwed the whole thing up when they brought in JK which was just as much about putting DSO in there place as it was with finding a lead guitarist. JK's strength was always that he sounded like Jerry and then after Billy made his comment they seem to have told him not to sound like Jerry. At the end of the day Grateful Dead music just works better when the lead guitarist isn't the third wheel of the band. Listen to where Meyer is in the mix compared to JK in Furthur and it is two different worlds.

Loved some shows like the Shoreline 6/4/11 also walked out of some shows. They ran pretty hot and cold. Also the Further audience was a complete sausage fest. That is one thing Dead and Co does way better.

^ lol wow man. You can have John meyer signing you jerry ballads all you want. He cant even touch JK's psychedelic inner segways. God, it hurts my heart that people have accepted JM mediocrity, derivative dribble guitar playing with no emotion what so ever. Theres a fucking reason they stick to the years that band plays, he cant play that shit. Period. JM sucks. He needs more watches and popped collars to play his PRS correctly ie See Jimmy Herring and John Mclaughlin

herk3.JPG

Never said Meyer was better and have no interest into getting into that argument. I just think Grateful Dead music works better when the lead guitarist is at least on equal footing with the rest of the band not a hired hand who always has to defer. That was my sense of Furthur anyway. It just felt like JK never knew how he fit in and I loved JK in DSO.

Talk about not fitting in is JM schtick. Youknow its pretty crazy that no one really cared about these guys until fare thee well hit and they realized cha ching!  Like 30 dollar furthur tickets. And before that ratdog and phil did almost rival tours on the east during the early 2000s too 2009, and couldnt give tickets away. And then, furthur played on the west coast for the first time. So, No phil, no problem, and we need another guitar player ie asoff and was. It was all a money move. Lest we forget the story that was made famous from this very ZONE. Wtf!

>>>  It just felt like JK never knew how he fit in

I never sensed that, but playing the "role" he had in between two "legends", if you will, had to be somewhat intimidating. I used to joke he had to get up every morning in wide wonder of how the fuck did I GET THIS job?!? That was quite the rock-star ride for him, Chimenti, Russo and the singers, although I have no idea what kinda' dough they were makin'.

Anyway, I enjoyed the guy as a guitarist- never "overplayed his part" and seems like a nice person.

Every lineup has its own culture.

Regarding Furthur and D&C: for me the real weakness of D&C, even at their best, is simply the age and ability of Mickey & Bill. Combined with Bob's age, they've slowed down the music far beyond anything imaginable. Additionally, the setlists are pretty stale and don't change much. Furthur at least kept decent tempos most of the time, and mostly kept interesting setlists.

Was Furthur the one with the Kimono guy with a cat?

I don't miss Further or any of the post Jerry multi-GD members' incarnations, but I do wish Phil had played [a lot] more shows with the Bimbo's lineup: Sless, Nelson, Herring, Headband, and Sipe (or Molo).

The best thing about Furthur was shows at Cuthbert, and the best show at Cuthbert was in the big rain. What a great light show that was, and the energy of the rain was infectious.

Furthur fan here

You may not like Mayer, but he definitely doesn't suck. The guy can shred, and he knows how to get a big sound that can fill stadiums.

What's really crazy is that a million or so people can see the band on any given tour, and 95% of them have an awesome time and really  love the music. Then, a few people tell them that they are wrong, the music sucks, it's just a shtick, they don't know any better, etc.

It's kind of a buzzkill.

always had a great time.  especially the one in 2010 @ the old portland Memorial Coliseum.

furthur fest was rad, but we had campouts,  methballs, motorboats, covid ponds, & pitbulls inside the show + more.

In the end run this was all an upgrade for DSO.

and I cant stand mayer but he is for real among the best guitarists on this planet.

oh yeah also saw them with Nick at Red Rocks.  miss that guy!

>>>>>always had a great time.  especially the one in 2010 @ the old portland Memorial Coliseum.

We spent some minutes before the start speculating on the opener. Many of the obvious heavy hitters came up, as well as some obscure, barely plausible possibilities. Our minds were truly blown when they began with...

...Picasso Moon!!!

At least they got it out of the way early....

I'd love to hear a live Picasso Moon or Victim about now.

It was actually a great version.

Relatively speaking, that is.

Better than any GD version I heard.

Well, I'm not going to read this thread, as I can imagine how it's going, but it's nice to see a that thread about music, really about anything other than politics can generate so many posts in less than a day. The zone ain't dead yet!

As for me, I liked Furthur. Russo was a great addition, and I really liked how JK & Phil played together.

They weren't the most powerful or "epic" group, but they were articulate and could float in & around a jam real nice, and when Bob wasn't collapsing on stage he would often fit in very nicely with the musical conversations JK & Phil would have.

After a quick look at my show lists it looks like I saw the band 37 times, and based on my notes there were only three or four that I thought were duds.

Personal experience & opinion of course, and most of those were in VERY small, small or very cool settings, but still, 33 - 4 isn't a bad record.

Carry on.

Covid ponds, Turtle?

Never saw Ratdog, Furthur, and all the later day post Jerry bands except Mickey half a dozen times. Once where Babatunde Olatunje showed up in Morristown, NJ. Saw Mickey about 4 times at Church of St. John the Devine in NYC over some years. And finally Phil & Friends 3 times . 1999, 2000,2001 all in NJ. The  first 2 with Dylan. Wish I'd seen Furthur but alas.

agreed

and yes, they were great , wouldve been cool to see / hear more

but alas..furthur we go ;)

i'd say furthur was a better band than dead and company.

d&c has low standards, this is a result of bobby leading the band. he's just not good at it. the drummers are weak and boring.

they're lifeless. we saw that w/ furthur as well, at times.

its obvious phil had higher standards for the music -- which we saw in his post gd career, for the most part.

saw some good shows, walked out of others.

the first east coast run in asbury park was an incredible party. just lots of lsd being passed around freely -- was pretty cool.

I loved Furthur, have some of the best memories of great shows and zoner meet ups ...:)

I will not go see D&Co, just a big no for me. Hoping to see the Q @ Lockn'....crossing fingers !!

Good times......

I will not see Dead and Company

I will not see them in a shed

I will not see them before bed

I will not see them in the rain

I will not see them to ease my pain

I will not see them while I'm dosed

I will not see them when I'm hosed

I will not see them close to home

I will not see them with a gnome

I will not see them after taking a pill

I will not see them without Phil

PHIL

the only upside of very dead and corporation

is exposing new generations to the music ( and perhaps less sausage?)

painfully slow and a bit hollow - the best players are non dead members, and there is only ONE PHIL - so the keyboard is OK, and then - some of the songs / none of the tempos

to each their own - get off my lawn - "Q" me  mountain was good times turts - a bit dirty all in all, but still fun

While I'm of the opinion that Dead & Co are too slow and the setlists are stale in comparison to Furthur, its still rock music and fun can be had. I only saw them once in 2016, and I had fun. Mayer is a great guitarist. He holds back for the band to keep their weaknesses from showing. It was cool to see actual young folks enjoying themselves to songs we know and love.

I worked every Dead&co show in this area. My observation was that for most older people in attendance it was a chance to reconnect with the scene as much as the music. For many of the younger people, it was a chance to see John Mayer's other band. Either way a lot of happy humans. That said, the only post GD recordings I listen to for the music are Phil and Friends.

John Mayer is an affront to human decency and DeadCo a filthy Live Nation-backed boomer-rock clown show.

Apologists for this bizarre Irving Azoff test tube creation are out of their minds. But I guess that's OK. Even awful bands have ardent fans. That's why Hoobastank exists.

I'd take a Furthur show over D&C any day.

First of a 3 night stand in Boston.

This show was a real wicked heater

https://archive.org/details/furthur2011-03-04.ccm4v.zman.112227.flac16

Tatters- please tell us how you REALLY feel!  That's a funny and partially accurate post. ;-)

I view DeadCo. as a creature that gives another generation a GLIMPSE of what used to happen, and introduces them to some incredible songs. And, yes, they pay serious dough to do this- no one is forcing them.

I got a freebie I couldn't resist to DeadCo at MSG for Halloween '19, and there was some amazing energy in that room. Different strokes for different folks.

My wife and i flew to Oregon for the Cuthbert rain-fest.

Probably the best Furthur show i saw.  the Atlanta Tabernacle show in 2010 is a very close runner-up. Simpsonville is also up there.

I liked Furthur more than D&C, but have enjoyed all the D&C shows i've seen.  Austin a few years ago being one of the better i've attended. Never having to have purchased my own ticket or pay traveling costs made them a lot more fun.

I don't go back and listen to either band, though.

Q

or Phil and friends

or "further"

>>In the end run this was all an upgrade for DSO.<<

Solid point. DSO is a better band now than they have ever been. Jeff Mattson is worlds better than John K.

That first night at Asbury Park was a very interesting night for me. I had invited a friend who is part of the Springsteen production unit to catch a show since he was going to be in town for a few days. We met up and got him situated at The Berk and walked over to Convention Hall to see the scene and then were going to go to dinner. As we walked past The Paramount, we heard a voice call to both of us, turned around and saw another member of the Springsteen camp. Neither of us knew he was a "Dead" fan so we were surprised that he was at the show. In short order he told us that he was not a fan and wasn't going. He was working and taking a smoke break and if we could keep our mouths shut, to come with him once he was done. Into The Paramount we go with him to find Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band filming a full band performance of Darkness On The Edge of Town. Neither of us had a clue. It was being filmed for the upcoming Darkness box set. We hung out for a few songs and about 40 mins before going over to see Furthur. On the way out, we were reminded that we didn't see what what just saw.

I get into the Furthur show with my camera gear and one of the other photographers and the media person both noticed the shit eating grin on my face and asked me what was up...nothing, I said. Finished my 3 songs and watched the show from the side of stage right since finding a seat wasn't happening. Sometime during the second set I noticed someone wander up near me from the stage right and lean against the wall. I looked over and Bruce and I gave each other the dude nod. 10-20 mins later he was gone.

^Awesome story skifurthur! Have any idea of the Boss's take on the GD? Clerence seemed to loved them.

OMG Tony, that's awesome. It sounds like Bruce may have been lucky enough to meet Bobby that night. A dream come true for Da Boss, no doubt.

Awesome story skifurthur! Have any idea of the Boss's take on the GD? Clerence seemed to loved them.

I do not have any specific knowledge of Mr. Springsteen's opinion of the GD body of work. I can take an educated guess though. One of the things Springsteen is known to do is that he casts a large net in seriously listening to all sorts of music. Considering that the GD songbook is an essential part of Americana, I would venture that he admires at least some of it.

It sounds like Bruce may have been lucky enough to meet Bobby that night. A dream come true for Da Boss, no doubt.

LOL. I'm sure he is still kvelling. Truth be told though, he met Bobby back in 1970 when Bill Graham was attempting to sign him and his then current band, Steel Mill. Springsteen & Co. were bought out to California to record some demos and Graham introduced them to the Grateful Dead

Looks like furthur takes it. Good. Fuck JM he cant even bring in his own songs cuz he is that talentless and classless. Help slip body is a wonderland. Come on. Even they all know it's laughable  Some OG zoners here know whats good and others wanna tag along on a shitshow shed project that doesnt even begin to touch what furthur did. I hope he packs it up soon. What a waste of time for bobby.

Never saw D&C but I remember liking the D&C first show at the Gorge in 2016. Very nice Eyes and Shakedown into UJB

Not taking away from any of the other GD members, but I've always thought/felt that Phil Lesh was the secret sauce that made the GD so wonderful live. Perhaps it was Phil's jazz background that allowed the jams to unfold the way they did. I have no problem with D & C doing what they do but without Phil, I'm really not that interested. That is one of the reasons I miss Furthur.

> Phil Lesh was the secret sauce

As with any sauce, the individual ingredients are important, but it's the way they come together--the synergy--that takes it to another level.

I could not have said that better, Tony. You and I are of like mind.

When Phil is on, the band is on.

While Kadlecik is not the most muscular of guitarists, he has a superbly subtle understanding of the Grateful Dead. A lot of the best Furthur moments derived from when JK/Russo/Phil were locked in tight.

> Phil Lesh was the secret sauce

As with any sauce, the individual ingredients are important, but it's the way they come together--the synergy--that takes it to another level<<<

Agreed.  The whole is > sum of its parts.

I could also make the argument that Bobby occupies the role of having the closest relation to all roles of the band ... but still believe it's a product of everyone

Not Grateful without Jerry.

Not Dead without Phil.

It's kind of a buzzkill.))))))))))))))))))))))))))))

I'm with Brian on the above and his previous post.

At the end of the day I will take what I can get when I can get it call me crazy but The Dead w Warren in 2009 were some of my favorite post Jerry shows and those shows get slammed by many. To me the weakest act these days is Wolf Bros but I still go and there are always a few of those moments that make it worth going.

My favorite Furthur shows were my last at The Greek in 2013. I also loved Shoreline in 2011.

I have enjoyed every D & C show I have attended especially The shows in Boulder 2018 and 2019 .

Further was good but I miss the real small hall shows of the Ratdog and PLF days

Dead and Co was refreshing of actually see more than a handful of women at the show

plf was some of the biggest sausage fests ever

^ This. The Q at the Maritime in February 2001 was truly something to behold, and I'd also add that it was very cool to finally see shows at Red Rocks in 2001 and the Frost in 2002.

I really think Kadlecik's, Weir's, and Lesh's chemistry was much much stronger in 2010 than all successive years. Listen to this kickoff of summer tour on 6/25/10, which isn't even a highlight of the summer shows. But the band sizzles:

Just found this pic of one of the Wallingford shows. Maybe the first one? Any zoners in this photo?

Loved Furthur!  It really had to do with Bobby- when he was ON, the band really cooked.   Phil was always reliable but Bobby was the variable.  Saw them more than a dozen times on the west coast...  Furthur Fest, Monterey, Golden Gate Park- it was great to see the band in some different venues.  However, I really missed Drums/Space at those shows.  There were good jams but I like it WEIRD!

Don’t see myself in the pic but I was at the Wallingford shows.. that’s a great venue!! An excellent example of what was possible without the hype!!

>>You may not like Mayer, but he definitely doesn't suck.

However - if I don't like him and don't go see him because I don't like him - then it really does not matter if he sucks or not.

^ Sixer- you're starting to sound like a confused old man...

Whoops. Never mind.

i think mayer has nothing to say in dead music -- one of the reasons that band sounds like garbage.

Earl - I'm not confused, but you must be if you don't understand what I posted.

Finally - something that ogkb and I agree on 100%

come on now, earl lives in FL.

everything is confused down there.

Jesus! That's TWO things we agree on, pieman.

it's the lsd man.

im tripping face right now.

i like pieman.

Whatever it takes, pieman.

lsd is the key to every door.
