how do you drive?
blew my first driving test by arrogantly and woefully failing the written part, do'h
failed the second time for a 7 point 3 point turn
3rd time was the charm and at 17, was finally licensed to drive
used to always been a fan of driving, would go anywhere at anytime for the adventure of it
would blast heavy metal, windows down, heat blaring during winter, not sure why it was so thrilling at the time
anyhoo, i have never been conventional at much, including driving
for example~ anyone else drive with their knees? i love this method, maybe as a challenge in dexterity?
are you all loyal to speed limits? (not)
will you pass slow drivers or just ride behind anyone at any speed?
my hubby, of course, is 100% legal eagle at all times, lol. he only will drive 5 miles max over posted speed limits, will sit behind anyone, even with available passing, although, he has been a professional driver which also makes him amazing at parking any vehicle in just about any spot, and, seeing him man farm equipment is likewise pretty hot. digression over!
have any of us have NEVER driven? one chick i know has always lived where public transpo has been a viable option and never saw the need.
for me, at beginning driving, i would always have a halfass vehicle my mechanic father could keep going, but, even since then, the space has been my sanctuary. it began my freedom from the fucked up place i lived, provided endless fun and adventure, and then, there are the cars we have had and loved like the best of friends.
first car i ever bought on my own: 1987 Dodge Colt! paid $97 monthly on a loan i pad off from working at 3.37 minimum wage at caldor lololol. drove it as my first tour vehicle and it finally died in the first hubby's driveway in the early 90s RIP
feel free to share your tales of vehicular history/memories/adventure

I love the travel tales Jorma shares in his book.
His first wife, Margareta, used to pummel him while he was driving, leaving her mark on the right side of his face. Ouch!
Roll on, Jorma!

My muscle memory puts me at
My muscle memory puts me at 10 and 2. When driving through a town I play a game, and try to drive exactly the speed limit. I have no problem passing on a 2 lane road. Leaf peepers are the worst. Those fuckers will drive 35 in a 55, for mile after mile. On the highway, at least in Vermont, I set the cruise control at 77. I lower it to 68 in MA, and in CT I go with the flow of traffic, which is somewhere between 40 and 90.

I didn't hear about 9 and 3
I didn't hear about 9 and 3 til years after I got my present car, new in 2004. 9 and 3 is kind of hard to do the way they designed the Subaru steering wheel, plus I'd been driving 10 and 2 for way too many years.
'59 Peugeot 403 with a sunroof. It was a gift in 1966. I was teaching and getting paid $70/month and all the gas I could use.

Taught driving for several months in mid 1980's for a Driving School. Most kids are capable of learning (they've been in school for fifteen years or so) but adults who never drove are terrible students.
Lots of miles, only one minor fender-bender where cops got involved.
I did not get a ticket (student could not get one; no license yet). He was not listening to the clear instructions spoken and pulled out into traffic, resulting in a 3 MPH 'crash'.
"oooohh my parents are going to kill meeee" said the kid. I was explaining "when the police arrive, you shut your mouth." Kid couldn't even understand that. Mostly though, they were good students.

Other than DWS and habitually driving 5 mph over, I strictly obey all traffic laws.
Been in a few wrecks, but none were my fault.
Well, I guess hitting the deer that one time was technically my fault...

Don't go rackin your mind bro, I read 10 + 2 and the 1st thing that pops into my mind is Stephen Stills 4 + 20. My mind is always in rock lyrics mode.
Got my d/l after a FAIL on try 1. Passed the written, but the motor vehicle dept fuck said I didn't make a full stop, which was bullshit. They just want your $$ for the retest, 2nd time was a charm and they haven't taken it away yet.

I didn't get my license at 16
I didn't get my license at 16 because I lived a block away from my high school... took my time w/ it all... and yes, failed my first exam because I was slow to leave an intersection while making a left turn.
But I did enjoy learning about car maintenance and learned how to drive stick on an old tin-can Renault 2CV (L-shaped shifter protruding from dash) while in Spain, and am a fan of buying interesting used cars vs new cars.
I change my hand position on the wheel frequently, too.

My car history
My car history
1972 BMW Bavaria (awesome tour car, owned it for a couple of years in the late 80s until all the window motors broke and I couldn't afford to have them replaced)
1971, 77 and 79 VW vans, 1 w/ huge sunroof, others were Westys, had the usual engine fires, still have the back door of the van that went to the VW rest home in Port Angeles, WA... they offered to take off the door for me w/ my music stickers, so I was like, why not? I'll do something creative with it some day, LOL.

Current car: 2006 Volvo XC70 "The Mystery Machine" that I bought a few years ago -- love this car, going to keep it running.

First car owned in 1971 at age 20 was a 63 Galaxy, white with red interior. Couldn't figure out why it was such a rolling cop attractor until I found out the guy I bought it from bought it from a local drug dealer. Drove it for a year until it started burning too much oil. My buddy was supposed to rebuild or switch out the engine with my help, but he wimped out on me after we got the accessories off the motor.
The car sat in my dad's garage for 6 months until he had it towed away.
