Driverless cars successfully tested in Las Vegas

https://thehill.com/policy/transportation/automobiles/540127-driverless-...

i'm not getting in one.

You'll have to pry the steering wheel from my hands

Yeah I hear you but sadly the American consumer has proven again and again they will do anything to save 99 cents

Let's see one make it across The Bronx.

Do they know when they get a flat tire , or do they just keep driving on the rim with sparks coming off it like a drunk driver in a car chase?

Sounds like Tiger could have used one.

Does it snow in Vegas?

It’s coming though

Somebody told me the other day that the "I am not a robot" exercise you do where you have to pick out, for example, pictures of a mailbox from a larger collection of random photographs is actually collecting data to train robots to perceive things as humans do.   Don't know if its true or not but its an interesting concept.

The problem I see with robot drivers is the lack of human interaction with other drivers or pedestrians, where nods of the head or waives of the hand can communicate information, like at a four way stop.

Never under estimate the wrath of the human

The thing about driverless cars is they don't have to be perfect just slightly better than humans and that's not a high bar.

who does the computer choose to run into? the other car or a pedestrian?

Depends on whether it's before or after the computer starts recognizing the pedestrian as "meat-sack".

Hackers could write in some road rage code for a more realistic driving experience.

My son just got into one of the top aerospace engineering grad schools in the country. His focus will be "autonomous systems," which is self-driving shit.

Although he tells me that self driving cars are safer than human ones, no fucking way will I be getting into one.

Wouldn't robots be better at building robots?

True story:  I was in Eugene for some music and ordered a Lyft, and it was a Tesla!

The best route was to hop on the expressway, and all of a sudden I noticed that the driver was talking a lot w/ his hands off the wheel.

He then shared that he was using the car's Auto Pilot mode, and asked if we minded.

Pretty wild.

Don't need one.

Bill Hicks' story about the 1980s talking car while tripping, " Your door is a jar."

Wonder how that can apply.

Summer 2020 I stopped at a WaWa on rte. 9 in Jerseyland after one of the summer concerts in Woodbridge.  It's also a Tesla charging station,  so I got to chatting with the nice young couple with one of those,  while Husky had a Water.

I had seen the charging stations before,  but never asked anyone how it all works.  So it's not free Electricity.  Each Tesla owner pays for the juice. They have an account.  They can charge at Home,  but it's quicker at the Electric Depot.

Also they explained about the Autopilot.  Damn thing really drives itself using several cameras in the body,  interfaced with a Clever driving computer that can interpret the paint lines on the Road.

That part of rte. 9 I consider somewhat challenging to drive, especially if it's raining. Painted lines are not all that clear.

There are several transitions from 2-lane into 3-lane and many mergers from feeder routes onto Turnpike,  Parkway,  and Rte. 1. Woodbridge area is near NYC feeder Routes.  However,  the Tesla autopilot handles all of that without a blink.

They were not trying to sell me anything, so it's a non-prejudiced account of their Tesla and its magical navigation skills.
