Since yesterday was International Holocaust Remembrance Day, I will share my father's story  :

 

“These events found our tribe (seven adults, nine children) occupying a farm called the Hermitage, 500 meters away from the hydropathic establishment of Aix-les-Bains. The adults are aware that the threat is becoming clearer. Every day we receive news of new arrests of Jews in the département of Savoie. Fabes and Voodoo, thanks for reading.  It's a pretty heavy story but needs to be told.  My father passed away a little over a year ago so sharing his story is more important than ever as his generation of survivors are leaving us.

my ex-wife's step-grandpa....he was austrian and his dad/family were the mayor or town officials. he told me the story of them all being lined up and shot. as a young child, he wasn't hit and hid under the dead bodies until the germans left and he escaped into the woods by himself. 

My mother was born in Poland a few years before the Nazi invasion. They spent a year hiding in an attic, and then another year in the woods. Part of my grandfather's ear was blown off by a German bullet.

When Eastern Poland was liberated by the Russians, they carted all the Jewish refugees up to gulags in Siberia. I guess they were better than the death camps, although something like 26 million people died in gulags. After the war everything was gone and they had no place to go. My mother and her family lived in a DP camp for 4-5 years, until the only survivor on my grandmother's side found them and found a sponsor to bring them to the US.

People don't realize that the US was far from welcoming to the Jewish refugees. FDR knowingly allowed the camps to thrive during the war, and Truman didn't invite refugees in after the war. There had to be a sponsor, an American, who would pay for transportation from Europe and then pay for room and board for the refugees.

My mom was born in a DP camp in 1946.  Her mother and one of her older sisters survived the camps.  She never met her other older sister, my aunt, because she was murdered in a concentration camp.  Her dad, my grandfather, fought in the resistance and reunited with my grandma in a DP camp after the war ended.

Me, my siblings, and first cousins are the first generation of our family born in the U.S.

It's also important to remember that anti-semitism did not begin (or, obviously, end) with the Holocaust.  My grandmother (the same one) also survived a mass murder (approx. 11,000) of Jewish people in 1907.  She was only two.  Her parents and two of her siblings were murdered.  She and two of her surviving siblings were raised by their "aunt" and "uncle" that they considered their parents.  

Judah, by what process did your mom get from the DP camp to the US? 

my family spent 46-51 in the DP camps until they got sponsored to the U.S.. Other branches of the family left the camps for Australia and Canada

Although this group represents the vast majority of Polish survivors, almost nothing is written about them. There's a "hierarchy of suffering," and those who survived the death camps and ghettos are the ones who are remembered.

I sent the article to my mother, and she also keyed in on that concept. The people in the DP camps who survived the camps treated the Russian deportees as somehow "lesser," like they were in all inclusive resorts.

After the war the Allies assumed all the Displaced Persons would all go back home. But a majority had no inkling to head back east to the Soviet sphere of influence. A lot of them had fled their homelands because of the Soviet occupations. Even considered the Germans as liberators when Hitler opened the eastern front. Unfortunately they were wrong and the Nazis Nazied in their conquered lands. So they filled up the camps adding a humanitarian crisis to the post war effort. The UN was born out of solving this problem.

 

 

BK,  it was a long process and time to get to the US.  My aunt married a Canadian and he sponsored the family to emigrate to Montreal.  Before the war, my grandparents lived in France, although they were not considered "French" citizens, but "Jews."  

As you know, America was not so welcoming to Jewish refugees.  In the 1950's, my aunt and uncle moved to Chicago from Montreal.  He had family there.  My mom and grandparents became naturalized citizens in the late 1950s and lived in Chicago.  That is where I was born.   

My dad's side of the family is just as interesting and important in terms of the Jewish diaspora.  He was born in what was called the "Palestinian Mandate" in the late 1930s.

A cousin in Paris just tracked down American relatives he had lost contact with after WW2. A letter arrived from my Grandmothers's  brother's son. My Grandmother left Poland in 1917, her siblings stayed. All her siblings and most of their family  were sent to Auchwitz. One brother,  got his children to Paris where they lived as little Christian kids during the war. One of the boys is the one writing to us. His father died on the transport to the death camp. He is  now in his late 80's  -and his decedents  still reside in Paris. After the war one of my Uncles who served in the war visited him in Paris, but that was the last time there was any connection. Until this week. In the letter, our cousin states how he wished his father had left Poland when his sister (my Grandmother) did. My cousin recently hired a genealogist and traveled to his boyhood home in Poland, but there was no trace of their life there.

Did you guys hear about the 'Wayfair' bend to the conspiracy theory?   There was an actual screenshot of the page that had way overpriced furniture/cabinets for sale labeled with names of missing  children? Once the qanoners 'figured it out' Wayfair quickly removed the items from the website and denied any knowledge.  

Now of course the story is buried, at least on google it is.
