It's a complex situation with Medical insurance in Canada, but let me explain what I know from mid-1980's. Thats when I attended University in Canada.

You get run over by the Bus or Train, they cart you in to Hospital and stitch you up.  You're covered.
Get in a fight at Hockey Game,  need stitches, you're covered.  Dental;  I don't think so back then,  maybe different now.

When the line blurs between "We Definitely Need That ASAP" and "Optional Procedure" many Canadians seek procedures in USA or other Nations,  and they pay for that stuff.  It's a long line to wait for medical procedures in Canada,  shorter wait-time if you have Ca$h and can travel to another country.

Of course,  Canadian income tax is a bit more than USA,  but you don't end up owing much money if you go in for some blunt trauma and an X-Ray.  Also every Canadian over 30 has some corporation,  and deducts all their stuff.

Since my shoulder surgery I hate the drive home from TXR. It hurts my shoulder a lot to drive more than twenty minutes anywhere. I still go places but it has to be worth the pain to go. I can see hitting the free shows if that's not an issue for you.
