Maybe this long version video has been put up already, but if you haven't seen it, it's a pretty good documentation of most of the event, with witless commentary that fits with the general tenor of the mob.
It also has direct footage of the shooting, so there's that.
After watching this I came away feeling sad. Sad at the event itself, but more sad because all those people represent almost half our country, sad to see such an obvious example of how fucking stupid so many of us are, that "fucking stupid" isn't just the lunatic fringe.

While the handling of this security breach could not b considered a success by any measure, I think it's amazing that more weren't hurt during what could have easily escalated into a complete, and in some people's views warranted, bloodbath.
I have not seen the complete footage to what lance linked and I'm I sure this event will b over analyzed in-depth over the years to come, perhaps even becoming the defining moment of the failed trump presidency, but as cliche as it sounds, my impression right now is that the biggest failure was one to communicate.
As much bluster and chest pounding and rhetoric about patriotism, civil war, revolution and martyrdom we've seen from the extremists and their ilk who stormed the capitol this week, it does not appear to me that these people fully grasped they were indeed committing a violent, treasonous insurrection in broad daylight who's only ramifications were to b met with deadly force at some point if their attempts were to b carried out to their full conclusion and that even that conclusion itself probably meant something different to each of them.
this is most apparent to me in the footage of the shooting.
clearly the mob had reached a line in their trespassing that all who crossed would b executed by armed guards.
They did not seem at all prepared for this reality and reacted almost whimperingly incredulous when they finally encountered it.
I find the footage morbidly fascinating as it really is the documentation of what will almost certainly become a historical flash point for the would b revolution/civil war/uprising these trumpstremists have been cavalierly bantering about for so long.
there it is, literally shooting them in the face and not a single man stepped forward as a volunteer to b a "martyr" to their "cause" even after it had claimed the life of one of their brethren, an unarmed woman at that, right in front of them.
I can't help but wonder if these people had any clue what they were doing or what they actually believe or r toying with.
I think of all these worthless, inciteful politicians, these media outlets, these absolutely detached Internet personalities, from the ridiculous guy who does those laughable trump propaganda paintings, to the few but fervent right wing trolls on this very message board.
I feel that all of them, perhaps even all of us, r someway responsible for this.
It is my belief that whether we like it or not, whether we want to or not, at the end of the day on some level we r all our brother's keeper.
i think of all the reasonable people who have had their minds twisted by bad faith actors and their sources on social media.
I'm sure we all have friends and family who have entertained notions and expressed opinions during this presidency that we would have thought more sensible and/or better than and it just makes me so frustrated.
do they have any idea of what they r actually believing and suggesting?

And common' doolittle, nobody wants to 'defund' the police. That's a terrible misnomer that should never have been used. People want to 're-fund' the police, spreading the money in better ways, more training, more options for non-violent situations, perhaps hiring better people (not so many fucking stupid ones).

And E, you're right, we've missed a chance to help these very misguided people who most likely trust almost no one - the message that if they could let people help them their lives would be less precarious. I know it's not funny, but how fucking stupid can one be? I also believe in "You reap what you sow", and that guy, along with that fool woman who was shot did reap exactly what they sowed, as did that poor dim woman who was trampled to death while carrying a "Don't Tread On Me" flag (oh my, the sad irony there).
When you choose to leave the shallow end of the pool and go out to the deep end, you'd better actually know how to swim or you'll tase yourself, get shot or trampled, and there is no one to blame but yourself if you believe that all your splashing around in the shallow end was really swimming.
And as far as "helping these people", there is no helping them, as they will never believe that they need any help. All those shallow Trumpian cultists are certain that the same is true about everyone not like them, and who among any of us believes that we're wrong and need to be helped?
That's going to be the ongoing issue with our country, since we're split right down the middle and no one will accept they're wrong, so the anger and the vitriol and the hatred is only going to get worse... all in the name of fucking righteousness (same as it ever was).
The difference is in the quality of the information that we base our beliefs on, and in our faith in the institutions we use to disseminate & judge that information. In this case the (mostly conservative) courts & election officials have spoken as one, but the fucking stupid among us choose to not believe that, simply because Trump says so.
