I keep running across Weir references lately -- guess he's been keeping busy. I figured his TRI facility would be virus music central with the high-def sound and video capabilities, but I guess they don't have good ventilation in the building or something. He calls the place a spaceship, so give em all spacesuits.
I can't really hear him on the first link below except for the intro? Am I missing it? And the Winona collaboration has been mentioned before, but I never knew how they met:

American singer/songwriter Cass McCombs has released a new track called “Don’t (Just) Vote,” which is a reimagined version of his 2011 song “Don’t Vote.” Produced by Sam Cohen and Joe Russo, the re-worked tune also features guest vocal performances from Angel Olsen, Noah Chomsky and Bob Weir (of the Grateful Dead).
The song has a meandering but powerful vibe throughout as subtle electric guitar riffs strum over simple drum patterns. The various vocal performances are an emotional highlight of the track as they plead for listeners to “Vote for change or pay the price.”

How did you get acquainted with Bob Weir?
My musical life began in California. I learned “California” — Joni — and I would sing it every night. And then next couple nights [my husband] said, “Let’s do a Grateful Dead song.” I was like OK. I went and learned it. I had no idea what was about to happen. I’m trying to understand the song. I’m like, “Rambling Rose,” what the heck? Then I watched the documentary, and I started to get it. Next thing I know, Robert’s coming to Nashville to do something with Dwight Yoakam and Cactus invited him out to the house. I’m like, “This is interesting, a Judd-head and a Deadhead.” He stayed for several hours, we talked, and his driver took him back to Nashville. He played and sang on this song we decided to record for fun. Next thing I know, we’re playing onstage at the Fillmore and I’m looking at Robert and he’s playing “Why Not Me.”

i saw bob weir a few weeks
i saw bob weir a few weeks ago on MSNBC talking to one of the editorial journalist talking heads who was totally geeking out over talking to weir and gushing about his first dead show, to which weir responds, "uh, yeah, i kinda remember that"...it was pretty funny...predictably bob weir had no revelatory input on the election and just did his standard head count schpeal, but it was pretty funny to see

Ari has some cred. He quotes rap songs more than GD songs on his show, but I can still understand his geeking out over getting to interview Weir.
And yeah, Alan, his discussion about Box/Ball of Rain was pretty interesting.
