This is a good choice imho. Worth it to get the Wall song alone I’d imagine...Not too many performances with Jerry playing electric without a bass player I’d also imagine
Disc One // Set One:
1. Man-Child
2. One Kind Favor
3. I Know It’s A Sin
4. I Was Made To Love Her
5. Keystone Korner Jam
6. The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down
Disc Two // Set Two:
1. Save Mother Earth
2. That’s All Right
3. The Wall Song
4. Mystery Train
Yes that means a couple things...not the least of which is that we don’t have to listen to the “can’t beat what already circulates” crowd chiming in( even tho it almost always does)
I ordered the FLACs with the poster and t-shirt, and my order still shows a shipping/download date of December 4th. I'm also still waiting on my Dave's Picks 36. :-(
I finally took the bait today. I've resisted the great bulk of post-GD merch, but I'm powerless when it comes to the Jerry/Merl stuff.
I've heard Wall Song and Keystone Korner Jam, but only this crap-audio Lenovo. I look forward to to cranking this release from the big-ass 80s speakers.
I really wonder where Kahn was during this show. Jerry, Kahn, and bill Vitt had been gigging together a solid year at this point. He had to have been recording a session to miss a gig with Jerry. My question is which one? Did he still have a commitment to Mike Bloomfield? Did Mike Bloomfield record in May 1971?
Can't wait to get this. Someone commented they couldn't believe Jerry had these kind of chops back then. Are you kidding me. I've been deep into '68 Dead on Archive for awhile now. There are some shows with really excellent sound and man are they the best. I would highly recommend if you have never really dived into '68 Dead, do it.
To have been able to attend this event one would be a craggy old-timer now.
But damn sam, how cool to have been able to see shows like this, and all the other great rock & jazz shows that happened in that shaggy venue.
Beyond Saunders and Garcia, Elvin Bishop, Neal Schon, Boz Scaggs, and The Pointer Sisters played there, and then all the jazz greats like Rahsaan Roland Kirk, McCoy Tyner, Art Blakey, Dexter Gordon, Bill Evans, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Hutcherson, Pharoah Sanders, Stan Getz and so many others.
The Keystone Korner must have been such a great little dive, on a side-street corner in North Beach.
At the same time The Matrix was rocking in the Marina, while the Fillmore West & Winterland were dominating the larger scene.
I've been listening to this release a lot lately, and I'm liking it all, but the one track I keep going back to is the Stevie Wonder tune I Was Made To Love Her.

John Kahn was playing with Bloomfield in 1971. They were at the Fillmore West & Winterland with Chicago Slim in late April/Early May. Following that Bloomfield had recording sessions in Los Angeles with James Cotton (no Kahn listed) as well as actresses/singers Teda Bracci and Ann-Margaret that John Kahn is listed on. So, yeah - Kahn was most likely prepping or working in Los Angeles the night in question. see: http://www.mikebloomfieldamericanmusic.com/bloomweb07/1970-1974.htm
this is a fantastic and unique performance indeed. The notes on the cover regarding the sq and masters had me a little nervous this might be a clunker, but I've found the fidelity and listenability to be very nice, and (I think) appropriate to how I can picture it in context of the room/setting.
These releases have been more enjoyable to me than the Dave's picks stuff, and a couple are on wax too. All three Garcia live vinyls I have all sound A+.
Plus decent guarantee the next song is gonna be another Jerry song ;)
