Trump caught the Covid

Forums:

We will get through this together.

A strategy to get sympathy?  Truth?  (or Dare?).

Did Pence get it too, or just the people who made out with Hicks?

My schadenfreude overfloweth.

White house tonight...

Knock knock

Who's there

KARMA

KARMA who oh fuckkk

Yes Trump spells it with three k's

Fake news.

If it were true we wouldn't be hearing about it so soon.

It is what it is.

President Pelosi...

Tuesday was the debate. I truly hope the ventilation in that building was good.

God forbid Biden or Wallace could have been in the "line of fire" when it comes to breath vapor.

Not to be morbid but we are in unprecedented times.

Just for my own knowledge, what would the scenario be if both Trump and Biden took a turn for the worst and something happened?

Would the ticket on Nov 3rd be Pence vs Harris?

Inquiring minds want to know.

Masks are for weaklings

as are brains...

I'll believe this when it's confirmed by an independent physician. Not some lackey doctor in his administration.

Hope "Typhoid Mary" Hicks she could give me a virus just not that one.

He caught the covid and left them a mule to ride.

No way would he ever confirm he has it if he didn't, he put it on his Twiddle. Yea Twiddle.

He has spent the last 6 months telling the public it would "go away".

Trump caught the 'rona. Should have worn a mask.

>>>I'll believe this when it's confirmed by an independent physician<<<

Exactly.

It makes too much sense and is too consistent with his only skill, the cheap con, that he's faking this to use to his advantage.

Watch him go on now heroically, and "defeat" the evil virus. He'll say it's all overblown and he was right all along.

I'd really like to know who exactly says he's tested positive???

I wonder if Hicks will be nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize?

The stock market thinks it's real. Dow futures are taking a hit.

Damn Lance. Head hit the nail.

Sometimes I feel so naive but he would relish in the "I beat the Cornoa" shtick

They are all fake (animation-bots) and no sane person would actually vote for them,

The elections are all fake and Soap-Opera TV shows.

Does anyone actually believe that normal people would vote for any of these Creatures ??

stu, notice how i didn't post in your creepy disappearance/murder thread and make a joke that the first thing i thought was that you were involved?

MWG more like Bush Harris, that's their jam now.

I'd really like to know who exactly says he's tested positive???

White House physician Sean Conley has confirmed it

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sean_Conley

Early life

Conley was born in Doylestown, Pennsylvania. He graduated from Central Bucks High School East,[2] and received his bachelor's degree from the University of Notre Dame in 2002.[3]

Conley received his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine degree from the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine in 2006.[4] He is a 2013 graduate of the Emergency Medicine Residency Program of Naval Medical Center Portsmouth in Portsmouth, Virginia. He received the Honor Graduate Award, Nurses' Choice Award for Outstanding Senior Resident Award, and the Resident Research Award.[5]

Military career

In 2014, he served as an emergency physician with the International Security Assistance Force at Kandahar International Airport outside the city of Kandahar, Afghanistan. He was assigned to NATO Role 3 MMU, and was appointed head of the trauma department. The unit won a commendation from the Romanian Land Forces for saving the life of a Romanian soldier injured by an improvised explosive device in 2014.[3] He served as the research director at Portsmouth Navy Department of Emergency Medicine prior to his assignment to the White House Medical Unit.[6]

Physician to the President

Conley became the Physician to the President upon Ronny Jackson's nomination for Secretary of Veterans Affairs.[7] He became the acting White House physician on March 28, 2018 and on May 4, 2018 became the Physician to the President.[8]

On May 18, 2020, President Trump surprised listeners when he revealed he was taking hydroxychloroquine as a preventative measure against COVID-19.[9] He confirmed that he was taking it under the guidance of Conley, who later issued a confirmation.[10] Several medical warnings[11][12] had been issued on its use for treating COVID-19 and scant research for its use in its prevention.

Real or fake, it's Trump's ticket to avoid any future debates.  His team knows that debates  expose his inability to be a decent human.  Now he can blame Biden for the cancellation of any future debate.

coming soon to a fucked up election near you, your new acting President.... Mike Pence.

Finally, he is locked up

Fake news is going to have a field day with this, shooting fish in a barrell

I guess Hope was putting some lovin' on Melania too. Interesting.

YES to this is a tactic. He's a simpleton and the camera doesn't lie. And, YES, if he really does have covid and survives, he'll use this to no end to say that it's no big deal, let's get the economy back on track and open everything up. He'll look like a hero to his simpleton base.

>So Now Trump Has Earned Your Trust? A Note of Covid Caution from Michael Moore....

There is one absolute truth about Trump: He is a consistent, absolute, unrelenting, fearless, and professional liar. A serial liar. A factually proven liar. How many lies now has the Washington Post proven in these four years? 25,000? A lie at least twice during every waking hour? Think of all the bad people you’ve known in your life. Even the worst ones you couldn’t say that about.

So why on earth would we believe him today? Has he earned your trust now? No. Yet, we’re decent enough to not want him to be sick, to wish him well, and maybe just this once give him the benefit of the doubt because why would he lie about this?

That’s not the question. The question we — and yes, I mean you, too, the media — the only question we really need to be asking is this: Why would Trump all of a sudden just start telling the truth?

All of you, my friends, have been saying for four years, “Trump’s a liar! Trump is a liar!” Why would you believe him now? He very well may have COVID-19. In fact, let’s assume he does. Of course he has it! Does that make him not Trump? I’m certain Mussolini came down with the flu one time. Pinochet and Franco would catch a cold every now and then. Margaret Thatcher must have had a migraine or two. None of them suddenly became nice or did good things - or started telling the truth - because they got sick. Jesse Helms with a runny nose was still Jesse Helms.

But Trump has a history of lying about his health. His longtime New York doctor, Dr. Bornstein, admitted a few years ago that Trump dictated his perfect “doctor’s letter” during the 2016 campaign. Then there was the White House doctor who said Trump could live “200 years!” What about his lying about that emergency trip to Walter Reade “to complete his physical?” Trump also has a history of lying about his opponents’ health (like when Hillary fell ill at the 9/11 remembrance ceremony, or what he’s now been saying about Biden’s health).

So we must be skeptical. We must always remain skeptical when it comes to Trump. He may have it. But it’s also possible he’s lying. That’s just a fact.

But why would he lie about this? What would he have to gain? I mean, it looks bad that he’s called it a hoax for seven months, and he totally mismanaged the government response  — and now he has it? Doesn’t it look terrible that he’s spent months downplaying wearing masks, dismissing social distancing, holding large rallies filled with elderly, at-risk supporters and even killing his own supporters like Herman Cain? And doesn’t this go against his brand of always projecting (and exaggerating) his own strength, his health, his genetics, his virility? Yes. This is all true. He would not want to admit he‘s come down with a hoax.

But — he’s losing the election. And he knows it. It’s not 2016. He was hated in 2016, but he’s hated even more now. Millions of Americans are ON FIRE and on the verge of serving him up a major league ass-whooping and a record landslide defeat.

So he needs - badly - to totally change the conversation about this campaign.

And he just has.

Democrats, liberals, the media and others have always been wrong to simply treat him as a buffoon and a dummy and a jackass. Yes, he is all those things. But he’s also canny. He’s clever. He outfoxed Comey. He outfoxed Mueller. He outfoxed 20 Republicans in the GOP primary and then did the same to the Democrats, winning the White House despite receiving fewer votes than his opponent. He’s an evil genius and I raise the possibility of him lying about having COVID-19 to prepare us and counteract his game.  He knows being sick tends to gain one sympathy. He’s not above weaponizing this.

He’s been lying about how soon a vaccine will be ready. What better way to hammer home that lie then by directing a saga in the final weeks before the election that culminates in the release of this “vaccine.”

The NY Times tax story was horrible for him. As was The Atlantic story about him calling American troops losers and suckers. There are a dozen more of these stories coming in October. Just last night, The New Yorker detailed how his campaign finance director (and Don Jr’s girlfriend) was fired from Fox News for....well...behaving like a typical Fox News host by sexually harassing her assistant and forcing Fox to pay a $4 million settlement to that assistant due to her behavior. And also, last night, there was CNN playing an audio recording of Melania talking shit about children separated from their parents at the border — AND talking shit about Christmas. Christmas!

These stories are about to be a daily occurrence. However, they may get less airtime and be less damaging since Trump and FLOTUS are now “sick” and supposed to be in our thoughts and prayers.

But most dangerously, HE MAY USE THIS TO PUSH FOR DELAYING/POSTPONING THE ELECTION.  The constitution does not allow for this, but he doesn’t give a f*ck about the constitution. He and his thug Attorney General Barr have no shame and will stop at nothing to stay in power. He may even use this as an excuse for losing.

Then there’s this:

He may use his Covid as a pretext to drop out of the race and move Pence to the top of the ticket. Pence would temporarily become President, and then Pence could pre-emptively pardon Trump for all of his crimes.

Again, though, he may have COVID. He probably does. But never, ever, ever take him at his word and never, ever, ever underestimate his survival skills or the depths of his deception or his evil.

What can YOU do today? Make your plan to vote and stick to it. Question everything. And if you and I are finally convinced he has it, do NOT sit silent as he schemes how to use this illness for his benefit.

Finally, on a personal note: Stay alive Mr. President. Your exit from public life must happen in the right and decent way. You have many years to live. You have a child to raise. Grandchildren who need you. A base that loves you. And the families of nearly the quarter-million dead who might be alive today had you done your job, had you cared, had you not played politics with people's lives. Over 200,000 lost souls — and YOU KNEW! You told Woodward in February it was a plague.  200,000 dead because of decisions you made, because you denigrated science and ignored the doctors.

I’m certain you’re listening to them now.

Covid must not remove you. That’s our job. With a pen and a ballot.

Surreal to be alive in these times.

Fascinating

Ronna Romney McDaniel tested positive too, and is experiencing symptoms. Pence has tested negative (so far).

Bring on the Harris v Pence debates!

She's 'Rona Romney McDaniel now.

Isn't it about fuckin time Trump and his klan actually got the 'Rona?

Yeah, I hope he lives a long painful life in prison watching his world turn to ash, his twisted vision of reality repudiated by the world, his children jailed and his grandchildren change their names to to distance themselves from any connection to him.

Ill be pissed if the 'Rona steals all that from us.

There'll be plenty of time to dance on his grave.......and of course, unable to dance, Ill crawl.

>>>>>>There'll be plenty of time to dance on his grave.......and of course, unable to dance, Ill crawl.

I'll probably just piss on it

Biden is negative.

Who's got the superior genes now?

I like presidents that dont get Covid.

Why'd he get tested?  I was told if we didn't test we wouldn't have cases.

This is going to make an awesome SNL skit !

< I like presidents that dont get Covid.

LMAO  Gold Jerry, Gold

He is not lying about this. The last thing he wanted is people talking about Covid. His approval rating for handling Covid is at 35%, and this just cements what an idiot he is about it. So far we have him his wife, Mike Lee, The President of Notre Dame who was at the Barret event where no one wore a mask, Hope Hicks, and as of a few minutes ago two more staffers at the WH. This is going to spread like one of those family gatherings you have read about.

Trumps Covid response has been the single greatest presidential failure in my life time and we will do nothing but talk about that for the next two weeks.

I definitely don't think he's lying about this nor do I think it's possible to pull off a lie like that today.  I'm also so out on conspiratiorial thinking right now.  Hicks and the RNC Chair tested positive, too.

Now add to that a media person and a member of the WH press staff that helps with press conferences.

The possibility of trump's virus experiences exists of similarities to when Reagan got shot.

A period of time went by before the powers that be released how serious his ( Reagan) injuries were. He almost bled out.

Hopefully Covid will be soon be called Trump's Virus.  Other than the China virus.

I hope this administration will not spin The Trump Virus as a direct attack from China.

Never know the plausibllities of this group.

Tim, he was tested because he was in close enough proximity to Trump the other night.

Guess it sailed right over your head.

Casting pearls before swine.

Robert Reich:

The President and the First Lady announced last night they have tested positive for COVID-19. No matter how much I detest Trump, I do wish him and Melania a safe recovery. But my chief concern is for all the people they came into contact with and put at risk with their callousness.

The Trump family refused to wear masks at the debate on Tuesday, and we all saw Trump ridicule Joe Biden for wearing a mask. Thankfully, Joe and Jill Biden have announced they tested negative — but they did not receive any formal warning of potential exposure from either the Trump campaign or the White House. And Hope Hicks received her positive diagnosis on Thursday but the White House made no official announcement; the world only found out until Bloomberg broke the news later that night. Meanwhile, Trump held a packed rally in Minnesota on Wednesday night, and Hope Hicks was in contact with multiple senators, representatives, and senior White House officials.

I’m thinking of all the White House staffers, campaign staffers, congressional staffers, custodians, debate attendees, rally attendees, event coordinators, and reporters who have now been put at risk because of Trump’s repeated callousness and refusal to take this virus seriously. And I’m thinking of the 200,000 Americans who have died as the president has downplayed the virus and actively hindered our response to it. A dereliction of duty with real, human consequences.

Trump Making Unannounced Visit To Walter Reed Following Coronavirus Diagnosis

October 2, 20205:18 PM ET

President Trump on Friday made an unannounced trip to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Md, White House pool reporters awaiting his arrival said.

Press Secretary Kayleigh McEnany said that "President Trump remains in good spirits, has mild symptoms, and has been working throughout the day. Out of an abundance of caution, and at the recommendation of his physician and medical experts, the President will be working from the presidential offices at Walter Reed for the next few days. President Trump appreciates the outpouring of support for both he and the First Lady."

The White House also provided a brief update on Trump's treatment Friday. Dr. Sean Conley, the president's physician, says that President Trump received an experimental drug made by Regeneron, which contains two antibodies against the coronavirus.

The medicine is currently in clinical trials and isn't approved by the Food and Drug and Administration. How the president's medical team got the medicine wasn't disclosed in the statement.

In response to NPR's query, Regeneron declined to comment specifically, citing patient confidentiality. But Regeneron said it can make the drug available outside a clinical trial through a "compassionate use program," subject to the OK of a review committee.

Article continues after sponsor message

The drug, called REGN-COV2, is given as a single dose by injection (an infusion). The president received the high dose being tested by the company – 8 grams.

Because the drug contains two antibodies it's sometimes called an antibody cocktail. It's OK to describe it that way.

The company released preliminary results this week from a test of patients treated outside hospitals. The study found that in COVID-19 patients whose bodies hadn't produced their own antibodies against the coronavirus, the medicine improved symptoms and lowered the amount of virus over time compared with a placebo.

The president is also taking some supplements – zinc, vitamin D and melatonin. He's taking a heartburn drug – famotidine (brand name Pepcid) – and a daily aspirin.

Well, that went downhill fast.

He and Melanie will recover at the WH > on the way to Walter Reed

I'm not buying it until they bury him.

And damn him, now they've preempted the 9th inning of the Cubs/Marlins game for Breaking News about the supposed health crisis of our heroic President, with the Cubs needing to score two runs to stay alive themselves.

I'm betting most Cubs fans care more about the ongoing life of the Cubs than of Don the Con.

Regeneron shares spiked in late trading, rising more than 3% after the market closed in New York. The company’s experimental treatment for Covid-19 hasn’t been approved by the Food and Drug Administration, but Regeneron confirmed in a statement that it had provided a a single dose of the medicine for Trump’s use after receiving a “compassionate use” request from the president’s doctors.

This story is kind of like a mash-up of The Emperor's New Clothes and The Boy Who Cried Wolf.

It must suck to watch the way you see the world come tumbling down in one 24 hour news cycle.

Hey Mike! It's funny you used the boy that cried wolf analogy. I had no idea my 12 year old nephew was listening to my conversation with my mom today when he piped in he thought Trump was lying about having the virus. I asked if he remembered the wolf story and reiterated that one of the most important things you have control of in your life is your character.

I so adore that young man. He is a good egg.

Merri, we are storytelling creatures. That's what we do, and it's our genius. We observe stuff going down in the world, and then try to make sense of it by comparing it to other stories we know.

Your nephew knows this, even if he's not aware that he knows it, and he does sound like a good egg. We need more of those.

Instant Karma has never sounded so sweet. Listened to it twice today.

Thanks Mike, I am so proud to be his Auntie. Out of the mouth of babes comes wisdom. How is it we can screw them up so badly later in life?

Ive been on the road all day and just saw Bidens speach. What a gentleman, no way would Trump do the same. Pisses me off that the administration didn't even tell Biden about Hope's diagnosis and he heard it like we did, from a reporters leak. What a huge dick.

I am pretty sure Mitch said he was tested and it was negative, and again without testing daily for whatever the gestation period this would still be an unknown on if he did in fact contract or not.

But if they use the test the public uses in Florida they are faulty as fuck from what I hear. The good thing though is the errors are more false positives, than false negatives

Wow. DeAnna Lorraine.   It's as if someone told her how stupid Kelly Loeffler is, and she said, "Hold my beer."

Oh, and F*ck Chris Christie.  A bellicose scumbag who wrote a book on civility.  That's Trump-level gaslighting.

I thought Seth Rogan's critique of DeAnna Lorraine pretty much nailed it, but your takedown of her had much more style, Bluest.

I'll have to google that, Mike.

>It's as if someone told her how stupid Kelly Loeffler is, and she said, "Hold my beer."

yes, classic stuff right there

Again, this is so deja vuish when Reagan got shot.

Trump got shot with the Trump Virus bullet.

I wish him well. If he dies he will become a martyr to some.

Fuck the Trump Virus and be safe zoners.

I hear ya, jaz, but for all his flaws, and there were many, at least Reagan didn't shoot himself.

I'm OK with that. Then they could self-immolate in his honor.

But then he'd definitely never learn empathy.

Who knows? Maybe some time on a ventilator would result in a Grinchian Transformation.

Let's all take a moment and send our thoughts and prayers to Melania so that she's better in time to devote all her loving attention to decorating the White House for Christmas.

>Who knows? Maybe some time on a ventilator would result in a Grinchian Transformation.

wishful thinking., Bluest.  Most likely what would happen is a lawsuit due to:

a.   ventilator was not gold plated, as instructed

b.   guy next door had purer oxygen than me

c.   couldn't grab nurse's pussy due to too much sedation

d.   one of the doctors was of middle eastern heritage

e.   etc., etc.

all amy comey barrets are bastards

President Trump’s vital signs were “very concerning” over the last day and he is not out of danger, the White House chief of staff said on Saturday, contradicting a rosier picture painted by the president’s doctors on television just minutes before.

While the doctors maintained that Mr. Trump was “doing very well” and in “exceptionally good spirits” after his first night in the hospital with the coronavirus, Mark Meadows, the chief of staff, provided a more sober assessment and warned that the next two days would be pivotal in determining the outcome of the illness.

“The president’s vitals over the last 24 hours were very concerning and the next 48 hours will be critical in terms of his care,” Mr. Meadows told reporters outside Walter Reed National Military Medical Center, where the president was flown on Friday evening and will remain for at least a few days. “We’re still not on a clear path to a full recovery.”

https://www.nytimes.com/live/2020/10/03/world/covid-trump/were-still-not...

On Thursday, Pence's odds off becoming president were 300:1. On Friday they were 26:1. I'd gather that they are even higher today.

It really is like the Darwin Awards.

My son put  it: it seems that the President has contracted a Democratic hoax....

Fucking awesome Don!

Give that kid a prize.

This is a very interesting interview with Maggie Haberman of the New York Times about her reporting on Trump the last few days.

A. There aren't enough hospital beds in the Country for everyone who will need one

B. Responsibly ?!

C.  If  Trump dies in 2 weeks, let that quote be on his tombstone, please

Check out the "update" video Trump tweeted a couple hours ago. It was clearly edited in one spot when he was fixing to cough/gag and many assume it wasn't filmed today.

His videos, along with his doctors' secrecy, is some North Korea-type shit.

I'm going to go out of my way to be civil & respectful when I say what I'm about to say, but some of you have really become craven and spiritually unbecoming human beings, there's an election in 30 days, may the best man win...anytime you're wishing death upon another human being based on political differences may be an opportune time to look in the mirror and reflect on what you've become.

Hopefully enough people see the macabre pleasure of the "new left's" joy in other's misfortune and want no part of it...there's an ebb & flow to life and election cycles.

I would also caution readers who happen upon this sad display to realize most of these people were never actually on tour but mostly saw Garcia when it was convenient to do so geographically...as they had more important things to do at the time.

idk bry it does not seem that crazy or malevolent to me. many folks including myself think trump is embematic of, and feeds daily, a rot within american culture and american political discourse and feel like all americans would be better off if trump did not exist. sure, its sad when people die, its sad when kids lose their parents, but that shit happens every day, and im not really any more concerned with it happening to the trump family than i am with it happening to families all over the country every day - not gonna lose sleep over it or cry about it, if i did, id never sleep and would never stop crying.

im not really wishing death on trump, i just honestly dont care at all if he lives or dies, and i dont care about the feelings of his friends or family any more than i would the friends and families of the countless people who die all over the world every day. like, i care about it in a big picture philosophical kind of way but it does not effect me on any kind of real emotional level like it would if someone i thought was valuble to the world in some way died. sure, its sad, but lots of things are sad every day for countless families all over the world.

im far more concerned with the potential positive or negative effects of trump being gone on the american political system and the american people at large than i am with a single person who presents no kind of positive value or contribution to the world dying and people being sad about it.

i guess the best outcome for everyone would be that he gets seriously ill but does not die and does not have lasting health effects, if that caused him to both lose the election and have a "come to jesus" kind of moment on his handling of covid and general assholery that results in some kind of increase in competence for the remainder of his presidency.

maybe his death would be a net negative and cause some kind of very serious social upheaval or government instability...i dont know...its entirely possible...but im just more concerned with those kinds of questions, and laughing at trump for being a dumb bitch than i am with his actual life. people die every day, tomorrow it could be me, it  could be you, it could be trump...im not gonna get my panties in a wad or pretend trump isnt an absolutely worthless sack of shit over it...it is what it is

Once again the weirdo who is ignorant of whomever else was "on tour", actually champions his ignorance into self aggrandizement.

Also, i claim "spiritually unbecoming" as my band name.

It's not political differences. It's his morals, ethics, lack of respect for humans, lack of compassion and empathy that make some people think that it's okay if he dies. What's not okay is if he continues to takes stances that are directly killing hundreds of thousands of people, and indirectly many more. To say nothing of the natural world and the resources therein. Really, Bryen, put it in an accurate perspective.

Most positive thread I've read in a while.

If chump dies and yes I fervently hope he does, and it is painful as hell,  what a shit show the funeral would be.   Hundreds of thousands cheering and a few thousand shooting them.

I am really hoping this is not a wh hoax.  It will probably work if it is.

no way its a hoax, this can only hurt trump in the end, even if its just by a bit

its only a matter of time until the mainstream media festival of pearl clutching and fake sympathy passes - i dont think major media personalities will ever say anything which implies anything positive about trumps diagnosis, but its only a matter of time before folks start to realize that there is a very powerful wedge that can be driven in between trump and certain sections of his base or potential supporters...what about the potential for long term effects after he recovers from the main illness and tests negative? there are many, many reports of after effects such as major fatigue, lung scarring, and most importantly cognitive effects such as a long lasting "brain fog" some people are calling "covid fog"

Teodor Postolache, a professor of psychiatry at the University of Maryland School of Medicine, estimates that "between 30% and 50% of people with [a coronavirus] infection that has clinical manifestations are going to have some form of mental health issues," ranging from "anxiety or depression but also nonspecific symptoms that include fatigue, sleep, and waking abnormalities, a general sense of not being at your best, not being fully recovered in terms of the abilities of performing academically, occupationally, potentially physically."

 https://www.advisory.com/daily-briefing/2020/08/13/covid-neurological

i am still of the opinion that biden is showing obvious mental decline due to his age at a rate and severity that is totally average and should be expected of many people his age. more than some, less than others.

but anyone who was concerned about bidens mental state should be equally as concerned, if not far more concerned, about the potential for lingering effects like this "covid fog" in donald trump, which has been reported even in people with fairly moderate cases that do not require significant treatments or a hospital stay.

without a thorough medical report made by an impartial panel of doctors, which we will likely never get considering trumps DRPK style of mysterious twitter health updates, there is now absolutely no way of being sure that donald trump will be physically or mentally capable of being president, not on a psychotic megalomanic level like most criticisms leveled against him up until now allege, but on a basic nuts and bolts level of being able to walk from place to place or coherently form thoughts or express ideas. IMO this has serious potential of flipping independent voters who are on the fence but leaning towards trump due to their perception of bidens mental decline, and flipping around the entire discussion of mental decline in the 2020 race in a way that casts insurmountable doubt on trumps most basic mental capabilities.

imagine someone who is potentially just as loopy as joe biden at his worst, but is also donald trump. he will be in quarantine and unable to seriously address these concerns for almost HALF of the time we have between now and election day, assuming he is symptom free and testing negative within the minimum expected timeframe for covid, which often does not happen especially in people at his age. if people can keep the conversation focused on potential long term effects for at least 5-7 days before trump is able to leave quarantine and meaningfully demonstrate his health and mental capabilities, this could be a wrap.

best case scenario he has about 20 days between the end of his quarantine and election day to prove to america he is not experiencing any long term health effects. all the medical experts in the country were not able to convince trump, his supporters, and most of the GOP in general to take the virus seriously in around 200 days...how can trump convince undecided voters to take him seriously in 20 days?

between now and nov 3 the name of the game must be "covid fog"

i'm sure the women who were sterilized without consent and children sexually abused in detention camps are sending thoughts and prayers.

Endless proof that these people are morons , and so proud of themselves

For months, the White House seems to rely on a rapid testing device developed by Abbott Laboratories that can deliver results within 15 minutes. But there’s a problem with using the Abbott test for screening in this way: It has only been authorized for use on patients showing symptoms and is thought to deliver a high number of false negatives. In one study published in July of tests ordered at New York University’s Langone Hospitals ER, it gave negative results in up to 45% of cases in which a rival test produced a positive result.

it is sad how happy with themselves they are.   Ecstatic and loopy with the possibility of  packing the court with a young super conservative judge.   Ironic th hat it is a super spreader.   Hopefully the nails in the coffin of the election of the evil one

msybe there is a god...

Trump has had a few oxygen drops that "weren't into the low 80s," and he's hoping to go home in a few days? Suuure.

If he wasn't POTUS, and getting a level of treatment that no one else could ever get, he'd be on a ventilator.

Trump on steroids is a scary thought.

Maybe they'll need to put in him a drug induced coma for a month or so?

and no, we don't want him to die, definitely want him to see Biden's inauguration.  And Justice.

Dude is getting a lot of high quality public health care for that $750.  Genius.

sounds like the West Wing will be transformed into the West Ward so Trump can 'go home' and give the appearance that he's all recovered. I would think that there will be a mass exodus of  household staff, who didn't sign up to work in a contagious hospital type setting

>Adrenergic blockers, or alpha-blockers, such as the blood pressure drugs doxazosin, prazosin and terazosin may not be as effective. Adderall can increase the potency of tricyclic antidepressants and lead to cardiovascular side effects. Antacids increase absorption of Adderall and should be avoided.

I have taken the rapid test twice, once for work reasons and once because of illness.

These tests are not accurate?

I've read recently that the rapid tests that involve a swab are not very accurate.

The reported rate of false negative results is as high as 50%

I changed my mind. Trump can die NOW. He's putting too many people at risk with his stunts - unless that was a stunt double?!

^ I agree, prolly the only real justice we'll ever get out of this clown

Kevin Drum:

>Trump’s eight months of COVID denial has cost more lives than his personal behavior over the past few days, but there’s something here that goes beyond denial and partisan politics. He simply doesn’t care if he gets other people sick. He doesn’t care if other people die. It’s sociopathic beyond anything we’ve seen before.

But it’s not just Trump. Was no one in the White House willing to stand up to Trump and insist that he cancel events and issue a press release? No one? Not one single person? What in the everlasting fuck is wrong with these people?

No instead they said hey how bout a drive by

> What in the everlasting fuck is wrong with these people?

Come on, Nanc, you know the answer to this one. They're mostly white people who see the world rapidly changing and their cultural dominance swiftly eroding, and they're terrified by that state of affairs. They're true believers who see Trump as the guy who's just unhinged enough to say and do the things they dare not speak aloud or act upon themselves.

'The president added in the video that he has "learned a lot" about the virus while in the hospital.'

"I learned about it by really going to school," he said. "This isn't the 'let's read the book school.' And I get, and I understand it, and it's a very interesting thing."

So NOW he's "learned" about it. Nice of him to finally get around to learning about COVID. And it's an interesting thing???

What a incredible dope!!!

And naturally he has to take a shot at education... "This isn't the 'let's read the book school". But with him of course it would never be about reading a book, because in all seriousness, when is the last time that fool ever read a book?

I mean really, I wonder if he's EVER read a full book. The man doesn't even know how to pronounce Yosemite.

Donald Trump in an absolute moron, and he's supported & loved by almost half our country.

America, the land of derp.

And that of course is the real issue. People seem to think that if/when Trump finally is dragged away that the nightmare will end, but the nightmare isn't Trump, or republicans or liberals or any type of politics, the nightmare is that HALF OUR COUNTRY loves an evil fucking moron, and they either refuse to see it or they CAN'T see it.

And that type of stupidity isn't going away.

Now, can we get on with something that actually matters?

GO NINERS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

> when is the last time that fool ever read a book?

He probably paid the guy he paid to take his SATs to read a few books for him too. You know, just for show.

It would be so funny if someone asked him what was the last book he read, and then after he blustered that "he's too busy" to ask him to tell us ANY book he's ever read.

And then if he actually could come up with an answer, which I doubt, to ask him details of the book.

No fucking way he'd be able to answer.

And this is our President.

derp

awesome picture  TOD - but scary

"I couldn't be President of my cat when I was on Dexamethasone,” she wrote. “He should not be exercising the powers of the Office of President on that drug. We are lucky if he doesn't start a war. He's incapacitated".

Doctors not involved with Donald Trump’s treatment at Walter Reed medical centre have described his taking of dexamethasone as “a big red flag”.

The drug, which is a steroid typically used to reduce inflammation in other conditions, could be a sign that the 74-year-old’s symptoms were more severe than what has been already admitted in public, one doctor said.

Dr Sean Conely, the US president’s personal physician, had said that Mr Trump’s condition “continued to improve" despite a dexamethasone dosage administered after his oxygen levels dropped twice over the weekend.

Although the steroid has not been approved for widespread use by the US Food and Drug Administration (FDA), it has been known to aid patients with severe Covid-19 symptoms.

Dr John Torres, MSNBC’s medical correspondent, argued on Sunday that “The fact they start him on dexamethasone is to me a big red flag that there's a little bit more going on here then we’re hearing about."

“To me, one of the more concerning things is to see if they start him on dexamethasone, because once they start him on dexamethasone it means his symptoms are more than mild or moderate,” the doctor added.

The US National Institutes of Health (NIH) says dexamethasone is recommended in patients “who are mechanically ventilated (AI) and in patients with Covid-19 who require supplemental oxygen but who are not mechanically ventilated”.

It adds that “the panel recommends against using dexamethasone in patients with Covid-19 who do not require supplemental oxygen”.

Dr Conley, the president’s physician, claimed Mr Trump’s discharge could come as early as Monday despite admitting the dexamethasone treatment.

Stanford University law professor Michele Dauber, who was treated with the steroid following brain surgery, used Twitter to suggest that Mr Trump was “incapacitated”.

"I couldn't be President of my cat when I was on Dexamethasone,” she wrote. “He should not be exercising the powers of the Office of President on that drug. We are lucky if he doesn't start a war. He's incapacitated".

Mr Trump, who has also taken remdesivir – another drug used in moderate to severe coronavirus cases – was said to have suffered from oxygen levels dropping as low as 94 per cent on Friday, and during “another episode” on Saturday.

Oxygen levels lower than 90 per cent would cause alarm as to Covid-19’s effect on the lungs, given that the disease is a respiratory illness.

President Donald Trump's hospital joyride and his manic Monday-morning tweets aren't just being panned by political pundits — they're also reportedly freaking out some in the president's own family.

According to Vanity Fair's Gabriel Sherman, the president's eldest son has been alarmed by his behavior over the past couple of days, in which he's been desperate to project strength while being hospitalized at Walter Reed Memorial Hostpital.

"Don Jr. has said he wants to stage an intervention, but Jared and Ivanka keep telling Trump how great he's doing," one source tells Sherman. "Don said, 'I'm not going to be the only one to tell him he's acting crazy.'"

However, even Jared and Ivanka reportedly agreed with Donald Jr. that the president's Monday morning all-caps tweet storms — which included messages such as "SPACE FORCE. VOTE!" — went way over the edge.

"They're all worried," said one source. "They've tried to get him to stop tweeting."

speaking of empathy

"Trump said it wasn't until his hospitalization that he truly started to grasp COVID-19."

tRump's Twiddle. What a POS.

"I will be leaving the great Walter Reed Medical Center today at 6:30 P.M. Feeling really good! Don’t be afraid of Covid. Don’t let it dominate your life. We have developed, under the Trump Administration, some really great drugs & knowledge. I feel better than I did 20 years ago!"

Looks like someone's phone is out of quarantine. I couldn't even get the entire storm on one screen.

It looks like the dexamethasone has Trump feeling pretty chipper. Like the Twitter version of roid rage. I hope this means his nutsack is shriveling up too.

A humbling Herman Cain/coronavirus timeline:

6/24: Attends Trump rally, maskless

7/2: Tests positive for Covid-19

7/10: Says he’s improving

7/15: Says his doctors seem happy

7/27: Says he’s really getting better

7/30: Dies

Thanks El Nino

So there still is a chance the a*hole could kick it before the election.

I am so conflicted with being a good person and hoping he is well and the rage after seeing him do a drive by in the beast with his Secret Service guys in the car.

Dexamethasone is one hell of a drug, as anyone doing chemo will tell you. Feel crazy, feel crazy energy, don't sleep for days, crash and burn. Crazy shit.

Like he needs anymore crazy.

Lol Judit! I thought the same thing when I heard the side effects.

Trump's quack refused to answer the reporters' questions about Trump having pneumonia

Michael Moore:

Awaiting the daily Parade of Quacks outside Walter Reed. Quacks? Yes. A doctor who lies - including lies of omission - is a quack. Trump’s two main doctors — Navy Commander Sean Conley and Colonel Sean Dooley — are military and thus take their orders from the Commander in Chief. He’s stage managing all of this.

Still, these doctors have produced:
NO medical charts
NO medical records
NO x-rays or CT scans
NO date of when he last tested negative
NO proof he has Covid
NO proof of anything

I am not a doctor, but after studying the available information, here’s what is possible:

Trump may have contracted COVID-19 a few days before the Rose Garden Supreme Court packing event. He was asymptomatic at the time  - and those are the days one is most contagious. He knew he had it before the debate, that’s why he didn’t show up for - and refused - the Covid testing that the Debate Commission required just hours before the debate. The following day, Wednesday, a press pool reporter said Trump fell asleep on the plane. “He NEVER falls asleep when traveling domestically in Air Force One.” Whatever doctor knew he was positive and let him be in contact with others must have his license stripped. The symptoms they’ve admitted to Trump having Thursday night means that he was infected 5 to 7 days before that — and carried it wherever he went.

We are being played. We are not being given the truth. Doctors contradicting each other. One stunt after another. It isn’t working. The majority of the country isn’t buying it. Let’s have another Trump Parade around the hospital! This time throw candy out of the SUV window!

If you want to make a bet on him dying these might be a good investment

The White House Gift Shop is selling a “Donald J. Trump defeats Covid” commemorative coin. You can pre-order it now for $100.

Awww Judit. Thanks so much. I appreciate the love and right back at you!

We all need each other during these crazy times.

I am heartbroken that an infectious disease has morphed into a political scandal and total misinformation.

210,000 families missing a loved one. Makes me so very, very sad.

^ LOL Judit!

“Donald Trump’s ride will be talked about 30 years from now like it happened yesterday.

It will be viewed as the worst photo op in presidential history. It speaks perfectly to his sociopathy, recklessness, neediness, and the extremes of his movement.

The Lincoln Project looks forward to crucifying him (politically) with it this week. He looks completely deranged, as he conjures the definitive 21st-century Dr. Strangelove vibe, as he waves at the QAnon freak show from inside the hermetically sealed presidential suburban with two Secret Service hostages.

Trump’s malevolent insanity and malfeasance have wrecked the country. At least 150,000 are dead who shouldn’t be. The economy is wrecked for the little guy, while Trump’s cronies and family engorge themselves. School is ruined, and so many pleasures of life are ended because of COVID-19 and Trump’s imbecility.

I wish I was able to be in the room with Susan Collins and Rick Wilson, Reed Galen and Stuart Stevens when she sees the ad coming for her with Trump in the limo.

Trump ended his presidency this week. The disclosure that he is a tax cheat, combined with his unhinged and out-of-control debate performance -- which included a call to arms for fascist militia groups, threats of violence, and sinister insinuations about a peaceful transition of power being dependent on his victory -- were more than enough to finish him.

But, at long last, karma has found its way to Donald John Trump. His recklessness and casual disregard for human life have caused an epic tragedy in America. That same recklessness and buffoonery has destroyed his campaign. It is bankrupt and broken. Its leadership is scandalized.

There is chaos in the White House and in the campaign. It is coming apart. The staff is confused and scared. They have been disregarded and treated like disposable dog-shit bags. No one trusts anyone or believes anything on the inside. It’s breaking up.

“THE RIDE” will be the eternal symbol of Trump’s collapse. He looks like a fool. A reckless fool who failed America more than any other American who has ever lived.

Get ready for Trump’s version of Dukakis in the tank. It will be our tribute to Roger Ailes, with a special dedication to Kimberly Guilfoyle for upholding the highest standards of depravity and insanity at the Fox News Channel.

America, the sane part, has come to expect nothing less.”

-Steve Schmidt

Steve Schmidt has been saying that same type of thing all along. The problem is he could be wrong.. Trump could win.. If Biden was in the hospital is there a crowd of Biden supporters waving flags etc.. plus Biden came out and tried to give a Bernie speech today. I’ve never seen a candidate win with I’m going to raise taxes.. I hope I’m wrong..

it's always fun to watch somebody destroy trump daily, it's pretty easy, lots of material to work with.

but, don't kid yourself, steve schmidt helped elect trump.

that being said, he's a fuckin' tool.

Well, when one of your big calls to fame is getting McCain to choose Palin, well,  that could be worse than a tool, lol, but helped the Dems win for sure...

Watching NeverTrumpers take on the GOP is sort of like watching the Soviets take on the Nazis.

A reporter asked trump how many of the White House staff are infected with Covid, he refused to answer. We already know of two housekeepers who work at the White House out with Covid. I'm thinking the people  who's most exposed are the stylists who do his hair and make up. We need a new thread: 'Trump spreads the Covid'

this is the moment of clarity  for republicans to distance themselves from trump.

Wow! That is so interesting and such a twist of fate. How are the Thumpers going to morally accept their fearless leader using experimental fetal stem cells to recover? Oh wait! They will just ignore science and will bury their heads in the sand with their hypocritical asses pointing to the heavens.

Could this virus scenario get anymore convoluted?

The monoclonal antibodies from the two companies are clones of potent SARS-CoV-2 antibodies that can “neutralize” the virus in test tube studies. Researchers plucked the genes for these antibodies from humans who recovered from COVID-19 or from mice artificially infected with the virus. The companies then put the genes in Chinese hamster ovary cells to bulk manufacture the antibodies, which were given to the COVID-19 patients as infusions.

From the company

Regeneron Position Statement on Stem Cell Research

Regeneron’s mission is to use the power of science to bring new medicines to patients. Unlike many other biopharmaceutical companies, all of our approved medicines and the majority of our pipeline were first discovered in our own laboratories.

Regeneron’s successful research and development work has always been predicated on a deep understanding of basic biology. We conduct very early-stage research to better understand human disease and discover important new treatment approaches. To keep innovating, we must continue to learn more through responsible scientific exploration.

As is the case with many other science-focused biotechnology companies, Regeneron uses a wide variety of research tools and technologies to help discover and develop new therapeutics. Stem cells are one such tool. The stem cells most commonly used at Regeneron are mouse embryonic stem cells and human blood stem cells. Currently, there are limited research efforts employing human-induced pluripotent stem cell lines derived from adult human cells and human embryonic stem cells that are approved for research use by the National Institutes of Health and created solely through in vitro fertilization. Research using such stem cells allows Regeneron to model complex diseases, test new drug candidates and can help unlock new scientific insights that ultimately could lead to the discovery of new treatments for people with serious diseases.

All of Regeneron’s research conducted on stem cells adheres to federal and state laws and regulations. Regeneron demands from its collaborators and vendors that all human stem cell lines used in its research are from properly consented individuals.

As a company and as individuals, we share a commitment to operating thoughtfully and ethically, particularly while navigating these complex issues specific to the biopharmaceutical industry. We are constantly evaluating our research practices to ensure they abide by the highest standards of scientific and bioethical integrity. We strive to stay on the forefront of responsible scientific innovation to continue making a difference in patients’ lives.

Thanks Slick. Science is so freaking cool! Will have to take a bit to re read and digest the above information. I haven't really ever done any research on other sources of stem cells and it is fascinating. The "in vitro fertilization" statement is interesting. Sometimes I wish I had more time to just immerse myself in interesting topics just for the knowledge. I love to learn and it seems life is so chaotic there is never enough time to expand your horizons.

Thanks again for the link.

Thank you Slickrock for the cartoon and article.

Here's yet another good one.

So grateful for the creativity of these political cartoonists, when we need them most.

It's great you used Science Mag as a reference. In the beginning of the pandemic that was the site I used to convince my Trumpster mother that Covid was going to be a huge deal and would disrupt our society for a while. I really thought that we would be struggling with the virus until June but by then our testing regimen and our track and trace policies would be in place. Boy was I wrong and I have to admit, the lack of leadership and policies has made me such and angry person. It's hard to watch this slo-mo train wreck destroy families and our confidence in the scientists making their case to the administration.

POLITICAL PORNOGRAPHY

Our misinformation problem is about to get much, much worse

The coverage of Trump’s coronavirus diagnosis was very bad — and very revealing.

Within minutes of President Trump announcing that he and first lady Melania Trump tested positive for the coronavirus, the interwebs were awash in speculation and conspiracy theories.

Is Trump faking it so that he can pretend to have recovered and thus prove the virus isn’t dangerous? Or maybe he’s floating the story in order to divert attention away from his tax scandal or his chaotic debate performance. Or maybe the “deep state” deliberately infected Trump to undercut his reelection campaign. Or the White House is using this as an excuse to get out of the next debate.

So many exciting possibilities!

Watching the reactions to the Trump story got me thinking about our broader misinformation problem. These days, when something important or “newsy” happens, there’s an avalanche of content online that overwhelms people and leaves them less certain of what’s happening than before. In this case, we had a single news event — the president tested positive for the coronavirus — that set off a flood of disorienting bullshit bouncing around the information space.

It’s not just the volume of content — it’s the speed. As Vox’s Ezra Klein noted, the New York Times published Trump’s tax returns, arguably the most significant document leak in a decade, less than a week before the story about Trump and coronavirus broke, and it was almost like the leak never happened. It was engulfed in the chaotic news cycle.

This problem is going to get much, much worse as we inch closer to the election in November, and a big question we have to ask, as journalists and citizens, is: What, if anything, can we do about it?

Charlie Warzel is a tech reporter at the New York Times who’s covered the information wars of the Trump era about as well as anyone. I reached out to him last Friday, as reports of Trump’s coronavirus test were breaking, to talk about why the media ecosystem is fundamentally broken and what we can expect in the coming weeks. There are no magical solutions in this exchange, but we do our best to lay out the problem and discuss things we can do at the individual level to sift through all the bullshit that’s coming our way.

You’ll probably detect a sense of shared exhaustion both of us feel about this moment and why the convergence of so many factors — polarization, social media, a whirlwind of misinformation — is creating an increasingly combustible situation for our fragile political system. If nothing else, hopefully this helps you think through some of the problems we’re all confronting in real time.

A lightly edited transcript of our conversation follows.

Sean Illing

We’re having this conversation on Friday as reports of Trump’s positive coronavirus test are streaming in and a familiar pattern is emerging: A massive, communal news event occurs, and before anyone knows anything, social media and the internet are crawling with speculation and conspiracy theories and the waters are already hopelessly muddied.

Does this feel like a snapshot of our broader misinformation problem?

Charlie Warzel

Oh, yeah, I think so. I saw a great tweet last night that said, “Tonight I realized which of my friends would be QAnon believers, if Q was a lefty.” It spoke to the fact that there’s a ton of rampant speculation right now bordering on conspiracy theorizing, when the truth is that we don’t really know much.

But we’re in what I’d call half-jokingly the “danger zone,” where you have a huge communal news event that’s actually very important — the president is diagnosed with a deadly virus — but there’s not a lot of movement on the story in terms of what we’re going to learn about this. We’re going to get little drops of details, and there will be some little advancements, but we’re not going to learn anything very fast.

So it’s a slow-moving and super-consequential situation and everyone is gathering in these virtual spaces, and it’s just incredibly ripe for baseless speculation. These are the moments that cable news and social media thrive in. Political Twitter and cable news becomes this weird space that’s like sports talk radio and it’s just take after take after take because that’s entertaining and there’s nothing else to do.

Sean Illing

It kind of feels like political pornography, doesn’t it?

Charlie Warzel

I mean, yeah, it’s such a spectacle. It has that raw entertainment value to it. And I admit, even I felt this pull to turn on cable news and refresh my feed to get this deluge of content and information even though I knew none of it was actionable or useful. None of it was teaching me anything. But like everyone, I’m watching it in real time as my emotions build and I’m just sucked into the misinformation rabbit hole.

The problem now, though, is that we all start to doubt the official narrative, and so then people start saying, “Okay, if the official narrative isn’t trustworthy, then what’s really going on?” And very quickly you go from “I came to figure out the news” to, 45 minutes later, game theorizing the line of presidential succession after Trump and half the government are dead and guessing who in the federal government needs to get moved to some secure location. It’s crazy.

Jesus, the last thing I remember seeing before I went to bed Thursday night was some aviation enthusiast tweeting photos of a plane that supposedly controls the nuclear arsenal when all of the cities have been leveled — it’s the “Doomsday Plane.” Someone was like, “It’s in the air right now!” And people are seeing this and thinking it could be true and it’s very scary. The president is sick and we have no idea what’s happening. And of course I wake up this morning and someone was like, “Um, we checked the flight manifest and that plane has flown 20 of the last 30 days. Relax.”

Sean Illing

Is this breaking our society, or do you think we can, eventually, adapt to this new information environment?

Charlie Warzel

I honestly have no idea where this is going. But I would say that I think the pandemic has supercharged all these dynamics.

If you look at the density of the QAnon movement, and the growth in Facebook groups, and some of the small social metrics we could measure, the last five months have been a massive moment for that. It makes total sense, right? You have a ton of people who are now stuck inside their homes, people who have lost their jobs, or people who are working remotely, and they don’t have other outlets and they’ve lost their community. They can’t travel. The world around them is scary and inexplicable. And it just seems like we’ve imported even more of our lives online and that’s driving all these dynamics in this moment. I have no idea how the hell we unwind all of this.

All we can really say is that the toxicity of some of these online spaces is starting to spill into the real world more and more. Whether it’s the boogaloo movement or the Proud Boys or whatever, you see these militia groups coming out into the streets cosplaying civil war when tensions are already so high. And there’s just no doubt that a lot of this starts online with these platforms where algorithms are warping our emotions and continuously feeding us dangerously misleading content.

Sean Illing

What kinds of misinformation do you expect to see as we move closer to the election?

Charlie Warzel

There will be all kinds of misinformation and disinformation, though some of them won’t be as dire for democracy as others. A good example of the harmless kind is the recent story about Biden allegedly planning to wear an earpiece at the debate. It’s a classic bit of conspiracy theorizing, it’s obviously not true, but it’s not really dangerous or destabilizing.

Then there’s the really destabilizing kind, like stuff about voter disenfranchisement or misinformation coming from Trump about Democrats trying to rig the election. I have to believe that we’re going to see a whole lot more of this as we get closer to November, and it’s going to prime people to question the foundations of our democracy. It’s priming them to want to take action, to go to the polls armed with AR-15s. Tensions can only get ratcheted up so high before it really boils over. No one knows where that line is, but we’ll cross it eventually.

Sean Illing

You’ve written about the tech platforms as the main vectors for spreading a lot of this malicious content. What should they be doing right now? And why aren’t they doing it?

Charlie Warzel

This is the latest chapter in a long story about the tech platforms. If there’s one thing they don’t want to be, it’s arbiters of truth. They don’t want to weigh in at all. But they’ve already put themselves in that position. I think the biggest failure I’m seeing from them right now is around the voter misinformation stuff. Facebook, for example, has decided the best way to skirt around this is to put a little label on it that says, “This information might not be true.” Or “Get the real information about voting ...”

I mean, from a user interface perspective, it’s just the barest minimum thing that you could do, putting this tiny little sliver of blue text down at the bottom of a post and pretending it’s an earnest attempt to communicate something. It’s the kind of thing you do when you don’t want people to engage with it, like a nutrition label on food.

Sean Illing

It’s like watching a commercial for penis pills or some high blood pressure medicine. You get 45 seconds of footage of some ruggedly handsome guy jogging with his wife or playing racketball and then, at the very end, you get 10 seconds of a fast-talking narrator explaining that these pills might cause imminent death or phantom limb syndrome or whatever.

Charlie Warzel

Yes! What they’re doing is the absolute bare minimum. They’re saying, “Sure, we want to help secure the election. We want a free and fair election. We’re trying to register people to go vote. We’re creating an election information center that people can go to.” But it’s the absolute bare minimum.

Sean Illing

What could they realistically do?

Charlie Warzel

They could do a lot more if they just choose to focus on voting. Given how much misinformation there is out there on voting, they could just put a moratorium on any official campaign ad that mentions the polls. There’s plenty of register-to-vote information out there. We don’t need Joe Biden or Donald Trump to tell people to go out and vote. If you can’t police all of this content, then just make a very specific decision to stop this particularly dangerous content until the election has occurred.

Sean Illing

The other side of this is the press itself. Both of us have written about Trump’s “flood the zone” strategy (here and here), and this poses an enormous problem for journalists who operate under the assumption that candidates are trying to win in the marketplace of ideas, but that’s not at all what Trump’s doing. He wants the press to fact-check his bullshit, he wants us to go all-hands-on-deck every time he drops a ridiculous Friday afternoon tweet, he wants us to cover every nonsense claim he drops in the public sphere, because that breeds more chaos and more skepticism and it keeps the news cycle moving so fast that no one can keep up.

This, too, is just going to get worse, isn’t it?

Charlie Warzel

I think it’s definitely going to get worse, and there aren’t any good solutions. I actually felt this pretty strongly the other day with the story about Trump’s refusal to condemn white nationalism or the Proud Boys during the debate. The media turned its spotlight to focus on the Proud Boys, and I think most people had heard the name, but a lot of people had no idea who they were. That’s totally understandable. I mean, it’s a pretty fringe group and you wouldn’t know anything about them if you weren’t super online.

But the story captured the problem the press faces. We have to thread this needle where we’re forced to elevate something by explaining it to people. We have to tell them what it is so that they’re armed with that information. We have to tell them why it’s dangerous or stupid or juvenile and we have to walk this tightrope of saying, “Don’t give this oxygen. Don’t inflate it. Laugh at it. But also be afraid of it.” It’s an impossible balance to strike, especially when there are real threats involved.

I just don’t think the media is equipped to walk this line. The last four years have showed that we’re basically out of our depths.

Sean Illing

To be fair, this isn’t really a criticism of individual journalists so much as the ecosystem we’re all swimming in now —

Charlie Warzel

Absolutely. I mean, it’s important that we talk about something like QAnon, because people all over the world are noticing that their family members are going down that path. So we have to arm people with the facts, but I’ve never been more unsure and paralyzed by individual coverage decisions than I have been in the last two or three months.

I have been following QAnon since December 2017, and I chose not to write about it until this summer. Because it was this constant calculation in my mind, “Am I elevating this commensurate with where it deserves to be? Or where it actually leads in the world?” It became abundantly clear that this was something that we had to take seriously, that it had reached a critical mass, if not well beyond that, and it’s something that people will have to understand and know about, and it has to be debunked. But there’s no way around the fact that covering it also amplifies it.

Sean Illing

So what are we supposed to do, Charlie? I’m getting the feeling I always get when dealing with these issues, which is that we’re diagnosing way more problems than we’re solving.

Charlie Warzel

It’s important for reputable and credible outlets to cover this stuff early, in order to fill what’s called a “data void.” For people who don’t know, this refers to what happens when there’s a news event, or something like that, and it’s only conspiracists or propagandists trying to inject disinformation into the public sphere. If they’re the only people who are posting about it on the internet, it’s going to get indexed in places like Google and on all the different social networks. So this is what people find when they’re searching around for explanations.

The best example of this was almost two or three years ago to the day, the Las Vegas shooting. The first people that posted about it were people on 4chan, and Google indexed 4chan as the number one search when you typed in “Las Vegas shooting.” So there’s an imperative for authoritative news outlets like the New York Times or Vox or whatever to have the best explainer on this stuff, so that’s what people find when they’re looking for quality, factual answers.

The other thing, and this isn’t a really popular point, is that there’s too much competition in this space. We can’t cut out all the bad actors in an open media ecosystem. The platforms definitely won’t do it. But one thing that the press theoretically controls is the amount of content that they put out. Going back to what I was saying earlier about last night on Twitter, we had journalists flooding the zone with their own speculation, their own punditry. I realize it’s a tough situation and we’re all just trying to do our jobs, or play our parts, but it all adds to the noise in the machine.

Sean Illing

What’s your advice, assuming you have any, to readers who are trying to sift through all this bullshit and want to avoid some of the pitfalls we’ve discussed?

Charlie Warzel

I mean, there’s no reason for anyone to be consuming information from the social media firehose at this moment — there just isn’t. A lot of news is going to occur, especially in the next couple months, and I think it’s best consumed by picking and choosing your trusted sources and outlets, and going there. Subjecting yourself to all the fear and anxiety and trauma is a really inefficient way to get your news, and it doesn’t help you understand the world any better. So pick a couple places you trust, places where you believe you’re going to get the right information, and basically check them once or twice a day at the most.

I guess I’d also say that if you have to be on these networks, especially if you’re spending time on places like Facebook, make a real effort to not be a vector for misinformation. You should have a really high bar [for] what you choose to share in these next three weeks. The best way we can clean up these polluted information networks is for people to do it in their own backyards. If you see someone sharing something that’s suspect, and you don’t think they’re totally radicalized by a conspiracy theory, just reach out. Be nice about it, and calm, and say, “I’m curious to know where you got this from?” Or “I’d like to show you this,” and send them something.

I think we all have to do our part here, because it’s very hard for the media as an entity to break through to people individually. It’s much easier if you’re an influencer in your own network and you’ve already established that trust and credibility.

The bunk rapid tests with 50% false negatives the White House were using really didn't help matters. These are the same rapid tests the Trump regime is sending to every State to use. What a fuckin mess.

COVID-19 Rapid Point-Of-Care Test Distribution

The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), in partnership with the Department of Defense (DOD), is providing rapid point-of-care tests to communities across the US in an effort to trace, contain, and combat the spread of COVID-19.

HHS is distributing 150 million rapid, Abbott BinaxNOW™ COVID-19 tests to expand strategic, evidence-based testing in the United States.

Wow vampires can get Covid too.

Yea Nanc, a little too late and a shitty test to boot. Why bother. We are 7 months into this fiasco.

The past few weeks I have started seeing the commercials for I think it is Everlywell, they are manufacturing at home food allergy and thyroid tests. Just today they rolled out the Covid test. Free with some insurance, not sure of the retail price.  ***I do not have any efficacy information regarding the product but at this point, a company coming to the table with SOMETHING inexpensive and convenient to be taken at home is better than waiting for this administration.

tRump was too stupid to have incentives for private companies to roll out mass, inexpensive, at home testing to diagnose, track and trace to contain the virus months ago because Covid wasn't something to worry about. "Just a hoax, will disappear, it will be like a miracle and go away."

Now the Everlywell company is going to kill it. Good for them if they have a reputable product that will help ease the burden on our medical staff and keeps them out of harms way so they can do more important work. A little shimmer of hope. We will see.

I am tired, exhausted and would really like to have my regular, somewhat boring and not earth shattering life back. Last nights balcony TV ad at the White House made me sick to my stomach. Motherfucker and the mask. For fucks sake. This is a Hollywood nightmare, slasher movie on steroids that no one would have picked up because it was too fucking unbelievable.

Sorry to be cussin'

Rant over

As for the optics, “deranged balcony address” is certainly a look – but not one that tends to end well. How might this version turn out? Unfortunately, it’s not a question Trump’s attention span equips him to answer. His reference points for the form are the occasional three minutes of historical documentaries he’s forced to watch while searching his stomach-folds for the TV remote. It feels like he switches over to Fox News before discovering how a whole series of 20th-century balcony stories ended.

The rants will continue until the Trump regime is gone. And absolutely, testing does not take the place of common sense measures such as wearing a mask. It's so simple and yet these sociopaths still refuse to mask up.

I have another appointment on Thursday with Project Baseline for a free self swab Covid test, it will be my fourth test.

Is that the one that requires you give all your info to google?

Hi Mark!!

I haven't done any research on the company. I had been interested in looking at the thyroid test so I "put it on the list" to check out the website then the Covid commercial came out today. At this point Google and all of the other companies have so much info on me I really don't care. I am pretty careful online and still use a Blackberry (gasp!) which I love and you will pry it out of my cold, dead hands! Have a spare iphone that was the grandkids extra one just sitting on the shelf. Lol.

Let's just get on down the road to contain the virus as best as possible. I'm super sick of this shit. I want my parents to be ok and live out their golden years in peace, I want to travel overseas again and explore the world, I want to comfortably eat a fabulous meal with amazing conversation over a couple of bottles of wine and I really want to hear live music again amongst friends dancing with wild abandonment!!

How many Republicans in and around the White House and Congress low-key want him to die? I'm guessing it's a substantial number. Once he's voted out, he's going to be disowned by the Republican party, outside the far, far right-wing loonies.
