The Chicago Bears and Kansas Jayhawks first ballot NFL Hall Of Fame running back has passed at 77 after fighting the effects of dementia. One of the all-time greats, both as a player and a human being.

IMO, if he hadn't gotten hurt
A very sad day for Chicago, but also a sad day for anyone who appreciates true greatness in any form.
IMO, if he hadn't gotten hurt so early in his career he would have broken every record, reset every comparison and would universally be considered the greatest running back of all time, and would be right at the top of every conversation about greatest football player of all time.
He was incredibly good, and the fact that he is the legend he is while only playing three full seasons before getting hurt, and then playing a year or two in a diminished state only proves how good he was. I was a bit too young to see him play regularly, but it seems that many of his highlights came against the 49ers, so over the years I've seen the film of him dominating/outclassing his opponents enough to understand how great he was.
And he seemed like a class act as well.
Fuck dementia.
