The 80's version is a disjointed ball of confusion thanks to Delaurentis Productions - but one thing it is not is cheesy. The David Lynch design is outstanding.
And Kyle McLachlan looks way more like the vision of Muad'Dib I got reading the books than this clown does.
I disagree, 6. I thought DeLaurentis' production was sheer 80's cocaine fueled cheese. Shiny shimmery type looks, all glam. Very weird. Zero grit to any of it, which for Arrakis is a contradiction. And House Harkonnen was terribly done. Feyd? Was that his name, Sting's character? Awful.
And Kyle McLachlan was like 35 and Paul is like 19. Nope. Not buying it. Like I said, the SyFy Channel version really was the best one of all time and their Children of Dune one was even better. Here's an article about it with a great title:
Syfy’s Dune Miniseries is the Most Okay Adaptation of the Book to Date
I didn't like the Lynch version because it tried to explain all the politics and what spice does in a movie which is impossible. That is what made the movie unwatchable. The only way to do that was in a series which SyFy did a decent job at but the CGI was laughable.
Even though the politics and spice is what made the books so interesting in a movie you don't need to go there. It would be fine as a straight up action adventure SciFi movie which it looks like this one is going to do. Hopefully before I die they will do a new series with the CGI budget of this movie exploring all the political intricacies of the book, but I think that Game of Thrones showed us that for whatever reason that isn't a money maker for producers at this stage.
>>And Kyle McLachlan was like 35 and Paul is like 19. Nope. Not buying it.
Not buying it? That's hilarious, dude. Kyle McLachlan was 24 when Lynch's Dune was made. The actor playing Paul in the new movie. Timothée Chalamet, is also 24 - the exact same age as Kyle McLachlan when he played Paul.
I mean - I get that you don't like it - but you should at least use google to make sure of your "facts" before presenting them.
6, it sounds like maybe you're taking this a little too seriously. Simmer down, pal; it's a thread about movies.
And regardless of age, McLachlan looked old. The new pretty boy looks like he's 10. It's really just an opinion on a fun thread. Maybe a walk in the park with the dogs today, 6? Some gardening?
Nino, I agree completely with your take. The Dune books are FULL of inner-monologue, schemes, plans within plans, and that's damn near impossible to translate to the screen. Turning the movie into more of an action flick may make the story more accessible for a movie audience and ultimately maybe a better movie, even. But you lose the very corr of the books. So much happens inside the characters' minds.
Lol. Life in Vermont must be rough. You all seem to have a hard time differentiating between shooting the shit and talking serious. Must be those long cold winters.
Go chop some wood, 6. Or get to the park, man. It's a day out. Breathe deep. You can maybe paint Trump's face on a moose's ass and then throw rocks at it or something. Whatever works for ya'...
Hey 6, that video is pretty awesome. It made me psyched for the new one and got me kinda nostalgic-psyched for the old one, haha. The Pink Floyd over the old movie also made it more kick ass. It's interesting how the 80s version all the colors and sets are very clean looking, kind of crispy, you know? Whereas the new one looks very dark, sandy and gritty. Changing times, I guess.
I'm going to give the 80s one a rewatch sometime in the near future. As cheesy as I may think it is, I DO love it. To me the Dune series is one of the three greates groups of books ever written, so anything related to them is fun.
You're welcome for the share - when I saw it I knew I had to get it in front of you.
I'm glad to read you are giving Lynch's version another shot. Remember - Delaurentiis made him edit a 3.5 hour version down to a 2 hour version which caused Lynch to need all those silly narrative lines from Virginia Madsen as Princess Irulian at the beginning of the film. (The only good thing about that was being introduced to a very beautiful actress I have followed ever after - she's great in Sideways!) That really make a very complex movie into a very, very, very complex movie that really only allows those who have read the books to understand - and I'm pretty sure you have read the books. It also caused much disappointment to Dune fans - but was not Lynch's fault. He wanted to tell a better story - but was ordered to edit it down. He did - but ever after swore this movie was not really his. He also did it because his contract with Delaurentiis allowed him to then make Blue Velvet (one of his best films) with him having complete creative control. In fact, the lesson that Lynch learned was to ALWAYS ask for complete creatives control of his movies thereafter -and I guess we have Dune to thank rot at. Look again at the artistic design and sound design (not the soundtrack, but the soundscape and effects) of the movie - this is really where Lynch shines.
Would love to read your thoughts after you watch.
I would agree - at least in terms of Sci Fi - that Dune is one of the three greatest series of books ever.
It's like I said, I "bust the balls" of the 80s Dune movie, only because I love it but recognize its inherent 80s chic style, which doesn't jive with me for the most part. I do like the movie though, just because it's Dune. As you mentioned, I have read the entire series, at least 5 times all the way through and up through book 3 again last year. I would LOOOOOOVE to see someone make a good movie of Children/Messiah, in the vein of what the SyFy channel did in the 00's. If you haven't seen that I recommend it digging around the internet for it, 'cause it was really good!
And of course, if someone had the cojones to make a God Emperor movie....well, shit. That would take massive balls because that's an insane story.
That's interesting about Lynch and the creative control, I didn't realize that. Is there an unedited version out there, I wonder? That's would be worth seeing, for sure. He's certainly a master artist and you can't deny that DeLaurentis is a master designer, but I still think there was more than few keys of cocaine involved in the process, haha. Maybe so, maybe not. I'll let you know my renewed opinion after I watch it again, though. :)
Lol, Jodorowsky. What a trip. He was Chilean and is revered as a genius among the 70s/80s hippie/alternative crew. He's one of those geniuses that's a little too weird for my taste, though. I never could get his work very much, but his books on psychomagic are interesting.
>>Jodorowsky's Dune 2013 (Documentary) - the best version that was never made
>>Lol, Jodorowsky. What a trip.
Yeah, Javs, to say the least. What a trip indeed. And for a guy who never made a filmed version of his vision - he has an interesting opinion of the new version:
“I saw the trailer. It’s very well done,” Jodorowsky said. “We can see that it is industrial cinema, that there is a lot of money, and that it was very expensive. But if it was very expensive, it must pay in proportion. And that is the problem: There [are] no surprises. The form is identical to what is done everywhere. The lighting, the acting, everything is predictable.”
Alejandro Jodorowsky Prullansky was born in 1929 in the coastal town of Tocopilla, Chile to parents who were Jewish immigrants from Yekaterinoslav (now Dnipro), Elisavetgrad (now Kropyvnytskyi) and other cities of the Russian Empire (now Ukraine).
Leave it to the Zoner antisemitic crowd to be disrespectful towards him.
I'm quite the antisemite with a Jewish wife and two Jewish children. Alright, I didn't convert, but...just WOW!
I've been called quite a few things, but this is first.
Man, there are some seriously butthurt retards out in the world today, Jesus fucking christ. So this is what I said about Jodorowsky:
"Lol, Jodorowsky. What a trip. He was Chilean and is revered as a genius among the 70s/80s hippie/alternative crew. He's one of those geniuses that's a little too weird for my taste, though. I never could get his work very much, but his books on psychomagic are interesting."
And that makes me an anti-semite. Dave, I really don't care if you're Jewish, Muslim, Christian, Atheist or whatever. Please, kindly go fuck yourself, regardless of your religion.
Here is all the Jodorowsky content from this thread. I don't see any anti-Semitism anywhere. And I'm half-Jewish.
>>>>>Jodorowsky's Dune 2013 (Documentary) - the best version that was never made
>>>>>Lol, Jodorowsky. What a trip. He was Chilean and is revered as a genius among the 70s/80s hippie/alternative crew. He's one of those geniuses that's a little too weird for my taste, though. I never could get his work very much, but his books on psychomagic are interesting.

>>>>>I'll give this to Jodorowsky - El Topo is one hell of a film!
The weaponizing of language is a very real thing. People who use rhetoric to create false-enemies ultimately degrade and belittle the realities behind the very causes they purport to promote. Anyways.
I just found out Jodorowsky was Jewish. Cool. I still think his work is weird as shit and his greater lasting value is in his texts on psychomagic, or treating psychological trauma through theatre, basically.
Dave, have you ever read anything by Jodorowsky? Had you ever heard of him before today?
Any Mexican acid western film that includes bizarre characters and occurrences, use of maimed dwarf performers, plus heavy doses of Christian symbolism and Eastern philosophy can't be all bad. On the other hand to each his or her own.
Anti Semitism is also a very real thing. While none had been exhibited (until I brought the subject up) the mere mention of it brought out some curious responses. OK, I will make an effort not to ruin this analytical movie thread with silly religious or ethical stuff.
The pen (or in this case the keyboard) is mightier then the sword. Let me close by quoting Martin Luther King Jr: "Returning hate for hate multiplies hate, adding deeper darkness to a night already devoid of stars. Darkness cannot drive out darkness; only light can do that. Hate cannot drive out hate, only love can do that.”
Dave, with each response you reveal yourself to be more pathetic. It's obvious that you've never heard of Jodorowsky before today and that once you saw it was me typing, you decided to play your holier-than-thou anti-semite game.
Further, your passive agressive bullshit is really sad. You come in here, fling your bullshit around, act like a surprised little victim when I call you out on it, and then quote MLK like you are going to take the high road because you won't participate in the shit-tossing which you started. Good for you, pal. You still sound like an idiot. Again, answer sincerely: Had you ever heard of Jodorowsky before today?
Dune is one of my favorite sci fi books. Turning it into a movie is a noble but difficult task.
At the beginning of the book frank Herbert writes: "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."
So you had never heard of Jodorowsky, right? You just like to be a dick and yell shit out for the hell of it? Even though by your own writing there was no anti-semitism in the thread to begin with?
Call me an anti-semite to my face someday. You want to play tough guy on the internet and call people out, ok, go ahead. It just shows what a pathetic coward you are.
Most of the time, turning a good book into an equally good movie is difficult. An exception would be Catch-22. Slaughterhouse-Five also works in both formats. Jodorowsky has worked as a novelist, screenwriter, poet, playwright, essayist, film and theater director and producer, an actor, a film editor, a comics writer, a musician and more. In 1965 Jodorowsky made an aborted attempt to film Dune. About Dune Jodorowsky says: "When you make a picture, you must not respect the novel. It’s like getting married ... if you respect the woman, you will never have child. You need to open the costume and to rape the bride – and then you will have your picture. I was raping Frank Herbert ... but with love."
In regard to the making of El Topo, Jodorowsky allegedly stated (in the early 1970s): "When I wanted to do the rape scene, I explained to Mara Lorenzio that I was going to hit her and rape her. There was no emotional relationship between us, because I had put a clause in all the women's contracts stating that they would not make love with the director. We had never talked to each other. I knew nothing about her. We went to the desert with two other people: the photographer and a technician. No one else. I said, 'I'm not going to rehearse. There will be only one take because it will be impossible to repeat. Roll the cameras only when I signal you to.' Then I told her, 'Pain does not hurt. Hit me.' And she hit me. I said, 'Harder.' And she started to hit me very hard, hard enough to break a rib...I ached for a week. After she had hit me long enough and hard enough to tire her, I said, 'Now it's my turn. Roll the cameras.' And I really...I really...I really raped her. And she screamed ... Then she told me that she had been raped before. You see, for me the character is frigid until El Topo rapes her. And she has an orgasm. That's why I show a stone phallus in that scene ... which spouts water. She has an orgasm. She accepts the male sex. And that's what happened to Mara in reality. She really had that problem. Fantastic scene. A very, very strong scene."
Jodorowsky later recanted his story about really raping the actress in that scene.
(From IMDB): In 2019, Jodorowsky addressed his earlier comments, clarifying that it was part of a publicity stunt and he didn't actually film a real rape scene: "They were words, not facts, Surrealist publicity in order to enter the world of cinema from a position of obscurity. I acknowledge that this statement is problematic in that it presents fictional violence against a woman as a tool for exposure, and now, fifty years later, I regret that this is being read as truth."

Some things are so predictable.

Man, there are some seriously

Here is all the Jodorowsky
Here is all the Jodorowsky content from this thread. I don't see any anti-Semitism anywhere. And I'm half-Jewish.

>>>>>Yeah, Javs, to say the least. What a trip indeed. And for a guy who never made a filmed version of his vision - he has an interesting opinion of the new version: “I saw the trailer.
>>>>>I'll give this to Jodorowsky - El Topo is one hell of a film!

Please note, I did not mention anyone's name. All I said was that the antisemitic crowd on the Zone know who they are.
Instead of resorting to anti Semitic tropes, that person is now using fowl language. What a clever retort.
Perhaps we can now here how bad United States citizens are and how wonderful the Don is.

The weaponizing of language
The weaponizing of language is a very real thing. People who use rhetoric to create false-enemies ultimately degrade and belittle the realities behind the very causes they purport to promote. Anyways.
I just found out Jodorowsky was Jewish. Cool. I still think his work is weird as shit and his greater lasting value is in his texts on psychomagic, or treating psychological trauma through theatre, basically.
Dave, have you ever read anything by Jodorowsky? Had you ever heard of him before today?

Any Mexican acid western film

Dave, with each response you
Dave, with each response you reveal yourself to be more pathetic.
Or even more, have you ever read the Dune books?

Dune is one of my favorite
Dune is one of my favorite sci fi books. Turning it into a movie is a noble but difficult task.
At the beginning of the book frank Herbert writes: "I must not fear. Fear is the mind-killer. Fear is the little-death that brings total obliteration. I will face my fear. I will permit it to pass over me and through me. And when it has gone past I will turn the inner eye to see its path. Where the fear has gone there will be nothing. Only I will remain."
Good stuff.

Most of the time, turning a
Most of the time, turning a good book into an equally good movie is difficult.
