I did the entire 1986 Summer Tour, and was there. It was the third of five Petty/Dead/Dylan shows on that tour, the others being at the Minneapolis Metrodome, the Akron Rubber Bowl, and the two tour ending shows at RFK Stadium in Washington D.C. Tom Petty opened all of these shows, and The Dead and Dylan alternated who closed these shows.
Dylan closed in Minneapolis and Buffalo at least, I don't remember if he closed either of the RFK shows. In Minneapolis, they must have been running behind schedule, because the Dead didn't take a set break and just played one long set, which was the only time I ever saw that happen. It was pretty weird seeing them follow Me & My Uncle>Mexicali Blues with Terrapin.
It was pretty hot that day in Buffalo, but not as humid as it would be in D.C. a few days later. Right before "The Wheel," Bobby says "America is headed back on an agrarian nation, let's keep it turning." This portion of the show, The Wheel>I Need A Miracle>Uncle John's Band, was broadcast live on Farm Aid TV:
i hung out and watched Dylan's set. Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers were his backing band at these shows. By the time it was over, it had gotten dark. A lot of folks had left early, and were already partying out in the lots. Many of them had started to light off fireworks, and I recall that it felt a little like going through a warzone heading back to the car.
It was my second show, I was 17 and high as a kite. I got separated from my friends very, very early in the day, and spent most of the Dylan and Petty sets sitting on that steep lawn inside the venue, but not in the stadium proper, just tripping out on everything. It's made my way in for the Dead and had a great show.
Afterwards I battled the parking lot war zone to meet up with my friends. I'm not sure how, but I found them. The crazy thing is that one of them started having a bad one pretty early on, and they went back to the hotel to ride it out. They came back to get me, and managed to park in the exact same spot.
