40 Years Ago 9/1/79 Holleder Memorial Stadium Rochester

Forums:

Afternoon show, features a 31 minute Scarlet>Fire.  9 minutes into Fire, Phil comes in on the chorus, he was very animated all day.

Came out early to read announcements w/Healy, both were totally smashed.

Sublime Friend of the Devil & Wharf Rat were also highlights.

Strange day with local Bay Area artist Greg Kihn and then local Rochester band Good Rats.

Thank You David Gans, excellent board recording.

then local Rochester band Good Rats.

That's a negative on The Good Rats locale. Although they formed in Queens, NY, Long Island was were they hung their hat and built their audience.

That really is a nice, long, flowing FOTM, and the solo in Wharf Rat, oh my.

Jerry Garcia.

We lucky few.

41 years but who's counting.

I believe this is ChinaRider's first show; he's a little older than me so I missed this but it's always fun to realize they played a pretty ripping Dead show

in that crappy old stadium.

I ended up seeing Journey and The Police there in the early '80's before it was torn down.

I remember the Good Rats throwing rubber rats from the stage and the crowd tossing them back. A band member played a baseball bat! I think they're a Long Island band (not Queens, sacrilege...)

Always had great times in the Rochester/Syracuse/Buffalo/Binghamton GD circuit...

Good show.

Reread what I posted above. That's what I said. lol

Sometime after this show, Robert Hunter opened up for The Good Rats at the annual spring fling concert at Fairleigh Dickenson University - Madison/Florham Park campus. There was a sizable MC contingent that showed up for Hunter and when The Good Rats got on stage and hit some of the members with their rubber rats, it got ugly fast. 20 mins later the concert was cut short and it seemed like every member of every local police force showed up within minutes. My buddy somehow lost his shoe in the melee and stepped on some broken glass and was about to be hauled off to jail before I saw a cop from my town and waved him to down to intercede. He cut my friend lose and told me to get out of there...which I did.

And it was 41 Years Ago!

Forgot to say in my above post, that was the LAST spring fling concert at that FDU campus.

We drove up from NYC. It's amazing how much abuse a young person can endure in one weekend. That was a long strange road trip. Good times with a ragged crew.

Four of us drove up from horseheads, this was my 3rd show. We came in on the thruway and they sent all the dead heads to park in the city and ride buses out to the show. We had no clue, but it appeared they parked us in the hood.I do remember people walking on stilts and costumes. The stilt people didn't last too long once the music started. We lost Mark in the show, he's gone now for real, but that night we lost him. He caught a bus back to car without us and he had weird time waiting at the car being hastled by locals. The drive home was just as strange. Stopped at Alfred state and Johnny disappeared there and our Volkswagen bug got turned sideways in our parking spot. Great show, took me years to get tapes of the show.

Went to this and a few more games there that I don't remember, but I guarantee that most of

the fans were fucked up on Genesee and who knows what else. Fun times in the '70's!

Of course we popped over from Buffalo... 1st Brent appearance for me since he was new to the band.

I can't recall (go figure) much that was particularly memorable except thinking that I wished it was night time instead.

Hi Local, yes it was my first show, that's when the bus came by.  Memories of that show are faint, I remember the rats.
