(Surprised not to see 10/11/83 or 10/17/83 on your list)

seriously, can i turn this in on monday??

My dog ate my list.

I'll add 10-11-83, MSG. They brought back St. Stephen after a 5 year or so hiatus. MSG crowd gave a hearty roar in approval. The jam between Bertha and China Doll is pretty killer as well!

I shouldn't blame the dog for being unprepared.

12/31/83, 8/28/82 in Veneta, and a few in the early '80s in Eugene because I love hometown shows.

Can I include the JG/John Kahn accoustic shows at South Eugene High School in 1982?

If we are including JG/John Kahn, then Oregon State Penitentiary show on 5-5-82  needs to be on the list. Fortunately i wasn't in attendance :)

Nice touring Shufffle!

Still makes me shake my head when I think that I was getting off to live versions of songs, like Birdsong for example (starting in '83), that some of you guys were getting off to when I was learning to spend my days w/out wearing diapers.

It's nutty.

Two shows...the big one being 10/10 but 10/9 is no slouch either.  Both have their own distinct feel.  Blessings to those of you were were in attendance for that 2pac.

Great seeing you KK...hugs your way my man.

Felina good shows bring together good peeps. Hoping I  can make it to at least one Phil run this year. Listening to 10/10.  Good stuff.

They brought back St. Stephen after a 5 year or so hiatus. MSG crowd gave a hearty roar in approval.<<

A shame that roar was more exciting than the tune, tho'.

Still, it checked the box, if nothing else:)

"Checked the Box"

Ummm.......Big Tours those years... Like to take That Ride Again...

AGAIN....

AGAIN......

What did you guys do to jerry those years?

>>>Ridiculous>guess you were not there

You didn't have to be there to hear the electricity in that Stephen.

It's just something people liked to say in the old days to make them feel better about missing it.  Similar to Egypt.

Today it's just simple clown comment.

Mr. Mayor. Your throng of loyal constituents await your list.

Ridiculous>guess you were not there<<

I was there.

That's how I know.

The initial  reaction was huge, mine included.

The performance?

Meh.

A really good run of 3 shows was Nassau coliseum from May 1981 but the first night 5/6/81  stands out for me.  They played a very special He's Gone.  It was dedicated to Bobby Sands who was an Irish nationalist who led a hunger strike in prison which resulted in his tragic death  on May 5, 1981. So sad.

Great song selection.

Set 1

Alabama Getaway-> Greatest Story Ever Told, They Love Each Other, Cassidy, Jack A Roe-> Little Red Rooster, Dire Wolf-> Looks Like Rain, Big Railroad Blues, Let It Grow-> Deal

Set 2

Hey KK's next homework assignment should be JGB shows.

IslandHey KK's next homework assignment should be JGB shows.>>>>>>

Noted

MarkD Great run you had and you said a mouthful.  Nothing better than going to school upstate New York when the Dead were touring. I went to New Paltz so I managed to catch not only the upstate show but a bunch in the extended tri state area and long Island.  Touring made easier.

7-17/18-82 the first 'weekend at the beach'-ventura county fairgrounds

b820717.jpg

7-17/18-82....

Piggyback with the return to the Rocks, 7/28 esp., and the Alpine weekend Aug 7th and 8th.

OK KK I can start to play along....I'll start w 1981...The shows I am listing all were meaningful to me in one way or another

3/7/81 Cole Field House saw songs like Birdsong and others that I had not seen electric. Also my first electric Aiko Aiko

3/9 and 10/81 MSG-Do I really need to explain LOL ?? Both of these shows were AWESOME and Wheel-China Doll was an epic moment for me. Also The Sushi Restaurant I worked for catered the show so we had passes both nights (only time I ever had passes)

5/1/81 GRATE show and my first Hampton show. I didn't miss another until 1989 OUCH!! Couldn't get out of Yom Kippur Breaking the fast, or was it Rosh Hashanah? one of the Jewish Holidays cost me those 2 shows. Thanks Thom from The PZ for the discs to this show they are awesome!! Killer Wharf Rat at the 81 Hampton show

5/2/81- Spectrum I remember really liking this one a lot. Especially the Scarlet- Fire and Terrapin

5/6, 8 and 9 -Nassau-Loved all 3 of these especially the He's Gone and Caution Jam on 5/6

9/26/81- My first show as a Freshman in College. What a show!! Killer Morning Dew. Plus Playing -Bertha -Estimated-Going Down The Road Feeling Bad pre drums was REALLY REALLY good!!!

9/27/81-Landover I remember this show being a bit flat but I caught my first Baby Blue so it makes the list.

!2/26, 27, 28, 30 and 31/81-My first New Years Run. Went to everyone after until they stopped in 91. 12/26 has a SICK Scarlet Fire and Big Boss Man bust out as well as The Eleven Jam in the second set. 12/31/81 was the best Grateful Dead show I ever saw. Unfuckingreal!!! The whole run was just AWESOME.

I'll get to 82 when time permits

I've babbled often enough about my favorite shows from this era, so I'll mention just one that probably won't be listed by anyone else...

12/12/81 Fiesta Hall - San Mateo Fairgrounds

It was not a Grateful Dead show, but a funky, fairly amateurish little event put on by Joan Baez and billed (poorly) as Dance for Disarmament with Mickey's band High Noon and an acoustic set with Joan Baez & Friends featuring Jerry Garcia, Bob Weir & Phil Lesh. No mention of the Grateful Dead or of Brent or Billy being there.

Maybe the "innie's" knew how the show was going to go but I think most people there and certainly myself and my friends were expecting to see Jerry & Bob play some acoustic music, which was happening fairly often at that time, and just have it be a fun little night. The hall wasn't very big and the show didn't sell out so I figure most people thought that was going to be it. For me I certainly didn't expect to see the Grateful Dead play electric that night, so when they did it was a damn blast.

It wasn't the best GD show I ever saw; they didn't jam at all, just rocked out a handful of standards, but everything is played well with energy and good fun, especially Cold Rain & Snow, but because of the surprise of the GD set, hearing electric rockers after all the acoustic playing and the general under-the-radar nature of the event it is one of the most memorable GD shows I ever saw.

(The only shots I took that night that came out. I have no idea why most were out of focus or just botched. Or maybe I do?)

Eggman. Many folks hve commented on that 3/9/81 show being better them 3/10. I can not see it that way for a very subjective reason being that I was on the rail in front of Garcia for 3/10.  It was my first time being on the rail at MSG and that was larger than life.   I need to give that 3/9 show a good listen. I remember Lance posting it before.

looking forward to your list from 82.  Will Etta make the list?

MarkD JGB is another list entirely but I can't help but notice you seen a few head bangers there.  Perhaps my favorite JGB show, which was a bit of a rager, were those 6/4/1983.  at The Chance,  Poughkeepsie NY.  The rafters were bouncing and I feared it may "tear this old building down"!

<<What was your first show and did you go to school in tri state area?upstate New York?  >>

KK

Sorry, was off grid for a bit. Ground water done flooded my finished basement on Thursday. Been bailing and ripping carpet out non-stop ever since. 99% of carpet out, many more miles til I sleep!

First show was 8/31/79 @ Glens Falls, NY Civic Center. Cost $9.50! Was heading in to Senior year in high school (Albany High) and while into music (SPAC was back yard and could catch bunches of shows on lawn for $6), was clueless on the Dead. Sat in amazement, had no knowledge of songs and they didn't play an encore. The next night, they played the great Holleder Stadium show in Rochester (if I'd only been on the bus!).

Next show was Utica 3/13/81 and got shown the light. No pyschedlics. Just the light. Since then, things ain't been the same :)

Went to LeMoyne College in Syracuse, NY. Good spot to have shows come to or near by and certainly in the "corridor" for Spring and Fall tours before they really started summer stuff.

My list is primarily built on ticket stub evidence and what's left of long term memory (sketchy at times, can't imagine why). On that note, it was recently pointed out to me that for the JGB show at the Chance, we only had tix for the late show, but we apparently were on the fire escape trying to listen the first show and somehow the door popped open and we got in. I don't recall that, but do recall it being fearful of it's stability as well (again, of course, there may have been other influencers as part of that paranoia).

MarkD......I am not surprised about your first show being 79. My first was MSG 9/4/79. I find that  many heads posting on the zone were in the same boat. 79 was a good year to get on the bus.... A very good year.

I'm in the first show in 79 club 1/8/79

Etta shows will absolutely make the list. I have many for 82 as I went to almost 40 shows that year

I'm another '79 baby... Springfield 1/15/79 as a sophomore in HS , then 5/79 @ UMass , and 11/79 in Providence .

There was Boston , Providence and Lewiston in 1980

Only Boston and Hartford in '81 (honorable mention had tix for Orlando in November w/Allmans and Outlaws)

Hartford , Red Rocks , OK City , Kansas City , St. Louis , Portland , Boston ,Syracuse in '82

Brendan Byrne , UMaine , Providence , New Haven , Saratoga , Frost , Hartford , Worcester , Syracuse  '83

Probably missed a couple and not to mention JGB or acoustic, Midnites, etc ...

Oakland Aud 12/28/82 I remember this was quite hot and post drummers was a barn burner. 12/28/82

Jack Straw, Tennessee Jed-> El Paso, Friend Of The Devil, On The Road Again-> Touch Of Gray, Women Are Smarter, Dire Wolf, Lazy Lightning-> Supplication-> Deal

Shakedown Street-> Samson & Delilah, Good Time Blues, Terrapin Station-> Drums-> Throwing Stones-> Not Fade Away-> Morning Dew, E: Satisfaction

Mak those wocester and Hartford 83 shows had some legs. Second sets Scarlet >Fire had a unique sound like they broke out drums from the caribean or something.

Etta shows will absolutely make the list. I have many for 82 as I went to almost 40 shows that year>>>>>

12/31/82 Jerry looking great & playing very loose.  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O5K2wGuCSbQ

I helped build the Mushroom float for free admission and Baked Ziti.

Etta looked like a black widow spider climbing the ceiling and it was not becasue of the ziti."Mama cooked a chicken, thought it was a duck"

I know exactly what you're saying, KK.

H2 was on the same glow.  Big head biting  spider.

listening to the SPAC 83.  Its blowing my  mind. The poise, the cadence, loosey goosey laid back approach. "The building  goes on and on. Its dastardly yet   menacing with a tinge of grace..... "this space is getting hot".and it still the first set.

Eggman.......where be your 82 favorites. We fans gottsa know.

The Quality of that SPAC  tape leaves much to b desired. Love at the start of Scarlet you hear the crowd rise up when the lightning strikes in the distance. It start the wind up.

Oakland Aud 12/28/82 I remember this was quite hot and post drummers was a barn burner>>>>

List should also include Baby Blue, rare that the band returns to the stage for another encore, and 12/30/82, with the NYE preview for the encore, kicked some serious butt..

No '81 Stanley Theatre shows ? Those Jim Wise recordings are excellent !

4/3/82-The Scope..Good show, very up tempo Eyes of The world . I still wish they played Hampton instead.

4/12/82-Nassau this show was en fuego!!!

4/14/82- Glenn Falls- Really good show and my only show at this venue which I had heard so many good things about .

4/19/82-Baltimore also a very solid show. Loved On The Road Again electric

7/27, 28 and 29/82-Red Rocks ..My first Red Rocks shows and I really liked em all. I thought I was getting my 1st St. Stephen 7/28 until it turned from a St. Stephan Jam into Black Peter. Ouch!! Still a smoker though.

7/31/82- Manor Downs really good show. both sets!! Music-Deal to close the first set was GRATE and the whole second set was Grate!

8/1/82 OKLA City Zoo Amphitheatre- Show was somewhat flat but it was a Jerry Birthday show so it makes the list.

8/3/82- Starlight Amphitheatre - AWESOME venue and a great show. Loved the pre drums Lay Me Down-Let It Grow and post drums He's Gone-Other one. !! Was a really nice night as I recall in a most awesome venue I wish I made it back.

8/4/82 - Kiel Auditorium - My first Stagger Lee and it was smoking. Was also a really nice change of pace to see an indoor show after many outdoor shows on this tour . This is the type of show you can't judge by set list The Boys were SMOKING!!

8/6/82- St Paul MN - Liked this show a lot!! Lazy Lightning-Supplication-Might As Well to close 1st set was RIPPING!! Nice Scarlet-Fire-Sailor-Saint as well to open second set

8/7 & 8/82 My first Alpine shows. Both nights were SMOKERS. Music-Sugaree-Music to open 8/7 was really cool. Good show through and through and 8/8 Far From Me- Scarlet-Fire to open second set was Killer. Also was always great to see John Cipolina on the stage w the boys as he was on 8/8 for post drums

9/14/82 University of Virginia- Very solid show and was traveling with my new friends Irish & Strak and others I met on summer tour. We had a BLAST or 2 or 20 !!

9/17/82 in my top 20 shows I've seen possibly top 10. Was RIPPING start to finish. First Ashes, Second Touch of Grey. The Whole show absolutely SMOKES. The Grateful Dead always brought their A game to Maine!!!!

9/18/82 Also a show I really enjoyed. Phil & Bob sharing the mic on Throwing Stones was way cool. Only second time I saw Phil sing. Smoking Far From Me.

9/20 & 21 MSG- Always a fun time at my home venue. Loved the Playing Crazy Fingers as an opener on 9/21 not to mention China Rider to close 1st set

!2/26, 27, 28, 30 & 31/82- Love the NYE run was my favorite run of shows until they stopped doing then(not including 85 at The coliseum ). 12/28 was off the hook. Sick Satisfaction I remember being w KK in the 2nd set and we were loving the whole set. 12/30 w the Etta & Tower of Power preview was way cool and NYE was also awesome. I remember it taking time to grow on me but like KK says above "Mama cooked a chicken and thought it was a duck" . I owe my buddy from kindergarten as does KK for leaving early to get on line so we were able to score our NYE ticket. KK asked Bill Graham for his Chicken Salad recipe

83 yet to come

Thank you Lee. Am 4 ever Grateful.

>>>List should also include Baby Blue, rare that the band returns to the stage for another encore, and 12/30/82, with the NYE preview for the encore, kicked some serious butt..

The 12/28/82 Baby Blue encore was about 20 minutes after the second set had ended. We were outside the building and Bill Graham said "get back in, the band is going to play some more."

Dragon breath fog drive home that night across the Golden Gate Bridge, everything was glistening.

I heart this thread.  It builds community through shared memories and experience. It involves the best band ever and it feels like everyone is smiling behind their posts!  Me likey.

I just made a video CD made from pro Getty film footage of the 12/82 Oakland Aud party and interviews with Brent and Mickey, that I will upload to YouTube (eventually).

It look only around 10 min. long, but it's festive.

Let us know when ya do! fer sher

I will, fly. Half way there.

KK you should b thanking Schwervo mot Lee. I wonder if Lee is a zoner . He's another buddy from RVC that I hit shows with. Did Brick make it over to Viva?

Here you go fly and all. New videos of the Oakland Aud 1982, with a Mickey & Brent interviews I posted at YouTube.

Oops, somehow I left out Santa Fe 83! Both shows were great. And the next one in Austin at Manor Downs. As we were exiting the Downs in Texas, there were barrels full of unripped GD Ticketron tickets. We grabbed hands full and those tickets were our entry salvation for many a show for tours well into the mid-80s. Our MO was to always look for the ticket taker with the thickest set of eye glasses. :).
