The Santa Cruz Mountains are on fire

Forums:

My heart is heavy and I'm worrying about friends right now, as one of the most glorious regions of the Bay Area & California is being decimated.

It's currently raging all along the western range from the ridge near La Honda, from Pescadero along the coast down to Davenport and closing in on Santa Cruz proper. Boulder Creek is under siege, Brookdale Lodge is likely gone, Felton is in big trouble and has now been evacuated along with most of Scotts Valley, which means that along with other friends of mine who live in SV, our good zone friends Hall & Dynamohum almost certainly have had to flee their absolutely beautiful home.

In the middle of an historic heat wave there were almost 11,000 lightning strikes all through Northern California the other night, creating over 400 out of control fires. I'm also worried about Peakfifteen & Jamjuice up near Guerneville, I'm worrying about MarkD near Clear Lake, I'm worrying about friends in Santa Rosa, Napa, Vacaville and all the way up in Grass Valley.

Down here in the South Bay, when I step outside my home in San Jose near Los Gatos and look east I see the massive clouds of smoke from multiple huge fires burning on the rural east side of the Mt. Hamilton range (fires they're concerned may join and climb over & down into East San Jose) and when I look west above the nearby Santa Cruz mountains I can see one of my favorite and greatest regions I've ever known literally going up in smoke.

Heartbreaking reports that Big Basin is mostly destroyed, and with fires raging all around Northern California there aren't nearly enough firefighters & equipment, so containment on the Santa Cruz mountain blaze is currently at zero. Help is on the way from multiple states, but right now this thing is bad, out of control and will likely get worse.

On a personal level, at the moment living in the 'burbs as I do is a good thing, but if that fire keeps growing and it rages east over the ridge then Los Gatos could be in trouble, and from there who knows?

I haven't heard anything about that happening, it would be almost beyond belief, but everyone here has been told to be ready to evacuate, and as we have all learned, in 2020 ANYthing is possible.

(I just don't understand why all the thoughts & prayers aren't working)

Anyway, stay safe everyone, praise be to those who fight fires, and good luck to all those in harms way.

That sucks! Hope all stay safe.

The worst fires  we've ever seen around here. So much loss and devastation.  Only good news is that the empty schools are being set up as evacuation shelters. Covid, Fires..what's next?! Please don't say earthquake.

Be safe.

> Covid, Fires..what's next?!

Disco Stu is working on his frog thing, so I'm guessing it'll be locust next.

((( Stay safe )))

Devastating

friend's home gone off of swanton. and 2 dog farm/home in waddell as well...hope molino survives...

i have brother friends that are both fire fighters there and work out of san mateo co.

these last few years have been brutal on all up in n and central cal., not a good trend.

be safe you all.

Heartbreaking reports that Big Basin is mostly destroyed<<<

This is heartbreaking!

As much as it was a royal PITA driving back up there to camp after the shows @ Shoreline sometime in the 90's it was well worth the effort to be in such a cool spot!

Bummer, last time down there checked out the old mercury mines, went to several wineries up on the ridge (David Bruce comes to mind), was a beautiful area...

Good luck and be safe everyone!

I have countless friends evacuated from the area and was down there all last week with my 12 year old son, we go every year. It's so sad.

Hoping that all of our friends are safe. These are terrifying times.

Oh Surfdead I'm so sorry to hear this... but glad they are ok.

Hall and Dynamohum and cat are safely evacuated to Santa Cruz. (Facebook report)

Jamjuice and Peakfifteen are safely in Petaluma. Blaise is still at home, things seem okay. (Facebook reports)

So sorry to hear about Mrs. Surfdead's relatives' home.

Sigh

Judit, 2,100 acre fire 7 miles north of Bolinas in Point Reyes Natl. Seashore.

Bolinas has an warning issued that people need to be ready to get out.

It's in a very rugged, remote part with ancient trees; I cringe to think of how much old growth is going to be torched, just like near Santa Cruz.

(Wife was just reading about Big Basin and was crying, hard times for sure).

Fighting it has been difficult for them; It's very smoky here and ash is falling like snow.

I'm just hoping for the best with wind speed and direction so this fucking thing doesn't come marching

down and wipe out both Bo and Stinson.

All the best to everyone.

I was just wondering, how do we keep our spirits up? It takes work, love, some kind of hope...

Thanks for the report, Local. I joined your wife when I read about Big Basin, one of the places we went camping when I was a kid. And then, stoner teen years in so many of the areas that are burning. And we all join you in hoping for the best with wind speed and direction.

So sad for people, air, water, land, living and growing things, people losing buildings that are/were places to safely call home, no place to breathe now... holy shit!

So far all is OK here in the Kelseyville area. Major fires in 3 directions. The closest, the LNU Lightening complex is probably 15 to 20 miles away still. And we have been extremely lucky that the winds are keeping our air comparatively clear.

These are trying times without the fires.  Hoping everyone stays safe.

Dry Thunderstorms now predicted for Sunday - Wednesday. Not any rain, just the possibility of more 'dry' lightning strikes. And more fires. Really bad news.

heavy weather news

MarkD, glad to hear you're still at home!

If the thunder don't get you, then the lightning will.

Be safe people.

So sad.  Hope the situation improves.

Vibes to the residents AND ALL THE FIREFIGHTERS!!! Hope y'all can stay safe.

And we have been extremely lucky that the winds are keeping our air comparatively clear.

mark, you jinxed it! idk about you but im right over on the lake/mendo county line in the hills above the 175 in between hopland and kelseyville and we are covered in smoke for the first time this morn...i can usually see all of the lake plus kelsyville and lakeport from my front door - this morning i can barely make out the shoreline

These Fires Are Crazy ! Wishing Everyone Safety During These Times - I Love Santa Cruz

Yeah Daylight, sorry about that. Smokey as fuck here in Clear lake Riviera.

Hang in there, those who are affected.

Yesterday, Kai and I drove down to the house that I grew up in and started hiking in Fort Ord National Monument.  A couple miles in we encountered a ranger who told us that the whole Park had been shut down and that we were to evacuate immediately.

Helicopters were flying all over the place.  I hadn't seen this many helicopters since it was an active army base in the 1970s.  A large Chinook helicopter dumped water on a fire just across Hwy 68 from us in Toro Regional Park, one of my childhood stomping grounds.

Crazy!

My friend in Santa Cruz just reported RAIN!!!

Brookdale Lodge did not burn. Firefighters are using it as base camp

It's raining in Santa Cruz.
