I grew up in New England and then lived in Chicago for about 10 years, so I've had my share of skeeters and then some. Where I'm at in California, mosquitoes are rare and I don't miss 'em at all.
I also don't miss humidity and the weed drought that used to precede harvest every summer.
Cutting the grass. Although I have sometimes enjoyed it, even recently, I could do without it. As a side note, I do not water, fertilize, spray, or treat my "lawn" of weeds in any way. It's kinda natural and has nice flowers all year if ya don't cut it too much! Lots of fireflies too, and there is even some beetle that eats up dog poop in a day or two. When you go to pick it up, it falls apart like clumped dried sand. Ain't nature grand?
Ya know, my lawn looks green most the time, at least from the street. I'm in southeast PA so we have humid wet summers mostly so vegetation grows lush here, not so much manicuring as bush whacking! The beetles are apparently all around but pesticides used on most show lawns kill them off, what a shame! I have not found a downside.

Enjoy!
On a side note rant about lawns. I am stupefied that we plant, fertilize, spray pesticides, manicure, and then ultimately throw out the crop we have tended to and tell people to keep off of. WTF is the logic here? Oh, vanity, that's it. Logic denied!

RocknRye, your "lawn" sounds
RocknRye, your "lawn" sounds wonderful. And your beetles sound like the answer to every neighborhood's dog poop problem. Is there a downside to them?
Our lawns go dormant in July if not watered but come back in the rainy season. Not lush manicured-type lawns, but pretty.
