A good read either way. I'd certainly put Terrapin in the top 10, or even top 5, and Hunter and Jerry would too I think. The story goes they thought of the music and lyrics the same day and the song came together flawlessly the next time they met.
I got about halfway through the list and realized it was just Jerry songs. Throw Weir and Barlow's output in there and you have a couple dozen more epic tunes. Goddamn what a catalog they had.
Of course there's massive subjectiveness involved, but that top 15 is pretty warm.
Enjoyed the commentary and inside Hunter/Garcia scoops AND vid's. A treasure trove- listening to #41 right now- killer "Here Comes Sunshine"! Thanks, Mike!
Painful to read although they do those lists just to piss you off.
I'd move Brokedown, SOTM , Terrapin, Comes a Time, Mississippi 1/2 Step , So Many Roads , Ramble On Rose up.
Ripple and Stella have to be top 10 . Touch , U.S Blues, Mountains of the Moon, Mission in the Rain down. They Love Each Other off the list . Why they got rid of the fun, fast 73 version who knows.
Took a closer look at the list now that I had time to read it all. It's all subjective, but a solid list. To Lay Me Down and Comes a Time definitely should've been on. Hell I'd put Foolish Heart over several of those songs too.
It's been a long time since I read Phil's book and I forgot about him saying Jerry was using again during the Built to Last sessions. Curious of the timeline on that since he looked and sounded great for most of 1989. They wrapped that album up in the fall. Those Warlocks shows in early October are legendary but fast forward a couple weeks to Miami and Jerry's voice sounds like shit (although it's still a phenomenal show). Maybe his voice was just shot at that point of the tour. Or perhaps he was never fully clean even in his supposed clean years.
Am I the only person that likes Go to Heaven? Every time I've read something about that album someone's shitting on it. Other than lazily throwing on Don't Ease Me In it's filled with good songs. Never understood the hate it gets.
The densely orchestrated, seven-part, 16-minute suite captures the symbiotic working relationship between Garcia and Hunter. In 1976, Hunter began typing lyrics; the same day, Garcia was, in Hunter’s words, “struck by a singular inspiration” for a melody — which perfectly matched his words. Inspired by the English ballad “Lady of Carlisle” and Garcia’s love for child folk ballads, this prog epic includes one of Garcia’s prettiest melodies (during the “Lady With a Fan” section) and a baroque climax of massed choral vocals and strings. As Garcia boasted: “People won’t believe it’s us.”

This is a good example of how Rolling Stone Magazine has gone to shit.
What they are referring to here are "Child Ballads":
from Wikipedia
>>>>
The Child Ballads are 305 traditional ballads from England and Scotland, and their American variants, anthologized by Francis James Child during the second half of the 19th century. Their lyrics and Child's studies of them were published as The English and Scottish Popular Ballads. The tunes of most of the ballads were collected and published by Bertrand Harris Bronson in and around the 1960s.[1]

The way Rolling Stone writes this, you'd think Jerry was inspired by Children's songs. Whether the author of this piece wrote it this way or the copy editor missed it, this is amateurishly sloppy journalism. How can you take a magazine seriously that spreads misinformation?
