Massive Explosion

Wow.

My brother in law (a Presbyterian minister, with a Phd), was in Beirut in 1982 when the Israelis turned it from a French Riviera style resort city into a bombed out wasteland...    Many stories of crimes against humanity that never made it to the western press.  Even a story of an angel who save thousands of lives...      that's when I changed my view to Israel being just another terrorist state, no matter how good the public (relations) intentions...

The government had stored “highly explosive materials” at the blast scene on the Lebanese capital’s waterfront.  A huge cache of ammonium nitrate, an explosive compound, had been stored at the blast site.  In a televised statement, an official of the Lebanese Higher Defense Council quoted Prime Minister Diab as saying: “I will not relax until we find the responsible party for what happened, hold it accountable and apply the most serious punishments against it because it isn’t acceptable that a shipment of ammonium nitrate — estimated to be 2,750 tons — was in a depot for the past six years without precautionary measures being taken.”

President Donald Trump said Tuesday that US generals had told him that the powerful explosions which rocked Beirut appeared to have been caused by a "bomb of some kind.  It looks like a terrible attack,.. It would seem like it, based on the explosion. I met with some of our great generals and they just seemed to feel that it was,"

Flood Rock explosion

That was enormous.  When they were reporting a fireworks factory explosion that seemed ridiculous.  Wonder what the real story is since there seems to be conflicting stories?

And while I don't believe the Israelis would so clumsy as to blow up half of Beirut by accident, they have been sabotaging shit left and right in Iran over the summer and bombing Hezbollah/Iranian weapons and munitions storage sites in Syria on a weekly bases.  As precise and calculating as they are, there is still room for human error.  Oops, we didn't know how much shit was stored in that warehouse.<<<<

I was basically thinking along these lines too, but can't help but wonder whether the Russians or some other interest behind the scenes may have had a hand in a rogue operation to intentionally stir the pot for some reason or another?

FWIW, Wikipedia is reporting that it was ammonium nitrate improperly stored at the facility for 6 years, transferred from a boat that was deemed unseaworthy. A Lebanon security source stated that the initial fire was caused during welding work on a hole in a warehouse. I agree with Ken, file it under "someone done fucked up."

Yeah pretty amazing Ned. FYI ammonium nitrate is what McVeigh used to bomb the Murrah building. Around 2000 lbs, so this Beirut explosion involved 2,750 times more material.

Crazy watching the one where the're only a 200-400 yards from away...obviously nobody was aware of what was possible.

Interesting to observe the lag in time between visual and effect for the shots that are much further away.

Those videos from people that  are driving are crazy too, you see the explosion and a few seconds later  the car is catching air. 

I wonder how many of those folks died while taking those videos.
