Videos of the massive explosion in Beirut today are crazy:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3vVIf0HkqHU
In the video, you can see a fire on a ship in the port that was supposedly loaded with fireworks burning and fireworks going off, and then a massive explosion that looks like a small atom bomb. Parts of Beirut are devastated.
Be careful with fireworks.

My brother in law (a Presbyterian minister, with a Phd), was in Beirut in 1982 when the Israelis turned it from a French Riviera style resort city into a bombed out wasteland... Many stories of crimes against humanity that never made it to the western press. Even a story of an angel who save thousands of lives... that's when I changed my view to Israel being just another terrorist state, no matter how good the public (relations) intentions...
Crazy video(s) though....

Yep, that would have been Bush I. The moniker got a new lease on life in the last month or so.
Whatever happened in Lebanon today, you file it under "someone done fucked up." That country was already going through massive inflation and its worst economic crises in decades (on top of the whole Covid thing) and it couldn't have come at a worse time.

The government had stored
The government had stored “highly explosive materials” at the blast scene on the Lebanese capital’s waterfront. A huge cache of ammonium nitrate, an explosive compound, had been stored at the blast site. In a televised statement, an official of the Lebanese Higher Defense Council quoted Prime Minister Diab as saying: “I will not relax until we find the responsible party for what happened, hold it accountable and apply the most serious punishments against it because it isn’t acceptable that a shipment of ammonium nitrate — estimated to be 2,750 tons — was in a depot for the past six years without precautionary measures being taken.”
President Donald Trump said Tuesday that US generals had told him that the powerful explosions which rocked Beirut appeared to have been caused by a "bomb of some kind. It looks like a terrible attack,.. It would seem like it, based on the explosion. I met with some of our great generals and they just seemed to feel that it was,"

Assuming that is what
Assuming that is what happened, 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate is more than what exploded at Texas City in 1947, which is generally considered the biggest domestic explosion in US history. That is huge. By comparison, the Oklahoma City bombers used two tons of ammonium nitrate.

Beirut is Hezbollah's town, They wouldn't just randomly blow up half of it. Don't see the Israelis doing that either. They are too precise. But who knows.
Why on earth someone would store 2,750 tons of ammonium nitrate in a warehouse for years and years like that is beyond me. And why were the fireworks that were clearly going off in the videos prior to the big explosion there? Oh lets store all these fireworks next to the warehouse full of ammonium nitrate. Anyway, giant accidental explosions like this have happened ever since people first invented gunpowder, but I am sure the conspiracy mill will be turning.

They would be dumb asses for storing it like that, especially in a built up populated area, but what looked like fireworks in the videos could have been RPGs and other light munitions going off before the big blast. Still can't believe though that they would store their stuff like that.
Here is a story suggesting that even if it wasn't a Hezbollah stockpile that blew up, it will still make people in Lebanon nervous about them hording munitions in other places in the country
https://www.haaretz.com/middle-east-news/.premium-beirut-blast-shockwave...
And while I don't believe the Israelis would so clumsy as to blow up half of Beirut by accident, they have been sabotaging shit left and right in Iran over the summer and bombing Hezbollah/Iranian weapons and munitions storage sites in Syria on a weekly bases. As precise and calculating as they are, there is still room for human error. Oops, we didn't know how much shit was stored in that warehouse.

Flood Rock explosion
On 10 October 1885 in New York City, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers detonated 300,000 pounds (140 t) of explosives on Flood Rock, annihilating the island, in order to clear the Hell Gate for the benefit of East River shipping traffic. The explosion sent a geyser of water 250 feet in the air; the blast was felt as far away as Princeton, New Jersey. The explosion has been described as "the largest planned explosion before testing began for the atomic bomb". Rubble from the detonation was used in 1890 to fill the gap between Great Mill Rock and Little Mill Rock, merging the two into a single island, Mill Rock.

I was basically thinking along these lines too, but can't help but wonder whether the Russians or some other interest behind the scenes may have had a hand in a rogue operation to intentionally stir the pot for some reason or another?

FWIW, Wikipedia is reporting
FWIW, Wikipedia is reporting that it was ammonium nitrate improperly stored at the facility for 6 years, transferred from a boat that was deemed unseaworthy. A Lebanon security source stated that the initial fire was caused during welding work on a hole in a warehouse. I agree with Ken, file it under "someone done fucked up."

Yeah pretty amazing Ned. FYI ammonium nitrate is what McVeigh used to bomb the Murrah building. Around 2000 lbs, so this Beirut explosion involved 2,750 times more material.
comparatively, the Beirut death toll seems small.
